Title: Jimmy the troublemaker - 100% done FINALLY!
Post by: Mouth for war on Fri 27/03/2009 00:43:27
Ok. This is the first time I have ever done anything at all with AGS so please be gentle :D
The game starts in grampa's attic. You're there to clean up after he passed away. The character starts looking around and soon enough (If you don't get stuck hehe) finds a magic book...he´s very skeptic about it but for fun he reads one of the spells and disappears into another world where the evil queen Josephine has gone mad with power. What will happen to our hero? Why don't YOU find out? Here are a few screenshots.

So...the game will be set in another dimension with lot´s characters, humans and non-humans to interact with...fantasysetting with twisted humor.  :D

Lovely graphics! What game length are you aiming for?

Thanks a lot :D Well I am hoping for a full-length game. I was never interested in doing like a 10minutegame. If I do something I want to do it for real hehe. But since I have to do everything on my own it will probably take some time. I kind of make up things as I go along. I do have the main story figured out. I work on it almost every day so hopefully it won't take an eternity to finish it. I'll post updates.

Who knows? I might release parts of the game as it progresses...when I think there is enough gameplay I might as well let you play that. We'll see. Really glad you liked it though, that makes it a lot funnier to continue doing this game.

Oh the shovel will have a big role in this game by the way. Besides the obvious stuff you're gonna have to dig for, I will hide stuff that you can dig up...but you'll have to find out on your own ;) Could be meaningless inventoryitems, funny messages etc. they won't be important to the game but I thought it would be nice to be able to do things besides the story...what do you think? is that a good idea?

Nice. I like the animation when:

Spoiler
he teleports to the other world...
[close]

You could make the character move across the screen quicker, then the walk animation would look more natural...

Thanks! Yeah that one turned out pretty good :) Actually i've been thinking about that...i asked around a little what people thought about the walking speed...some say it´s working fine...and some that it's a little slow...so i don't know if i should change it hehe...

I played the demo today and I liked it. I think the clean graphics work very well, so go good luck with further progress.

There was just one thing that really bothered me: The main character is MUCH too slow, it's really annoying over the time, especially when you wanna go back some screens to a place where you've already been. Please make him either move faster or include a feature to immediately change a room without having to walk all the way through it.

Thank you :D I have already changed his walkingspeed but i guess i forgot to include that in the demoversion. At first it didn't bother me as much but when more and more people said that he walks too slow i changed it.

I'm STILL working on this little game and its getting near completion. Takes a while when you have to do everything on your own though...well everybody here knows that hehe.

So far there are 63 backgrounds made for the game and I'm working on the last part. May take a little while though. I do have a life outside AGS you know. yeah it's true :D but like I said. It's not too far away now and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in betatesting when it's ready? Drop me a line if you'd like to do that :) In the meantime I'm posting some new screenshots. Hope you'll like them.

  Looks good man, I look forward to this one.  Bruella's pig slippers are hilarious, they should squeak (or squeal?) if she walks around in them. 8)

Thank you for your kind words :D My biggest issue might be that I'm not the greatest animator in the world but I think I've done a descent job with them and I hope it won't keep you guys away from playing the game because of that :)

This looks very Simon the Sorcereresque! I loved the first game in that series, and this looks to continue on in that tradition.

Looking forward to it!

Are you kidding??  The graphics look great & there's no way they'll keep anyone from playing...I, for one cannot WAIT.  Sooo...when will it be done??   ;)

Well...since this is a onemanjob it always takes longer than you expect. But those latest backgrounds with the stairway and the bedroom is in the final parts of the game...There is just one more detour for the player before he can beat the game...(could that moving painting has something to do with it?!?!? I won't tell ;) ) But I guess you could say it's about 90% finished...so far it takes me a little more than an hour to play through. So i guess you'll beat it in 35 minutes :D but then there's always the music and some finishing touches.

For example...I have a small sidequest in the game. You'll find a shovel very early in the game and here and there, if you pixelhunt, the word "Ground" will appear. Which means that's a digspot...in those I will hide personal messages from my life....useless inventory and other funny stuff. I just have to decide where to put those spots and what kinds of stuff you'll find hehe...You'll have to find them by yourself though :D...no X marks the spot here oh nooo.
Title: Re: Jimmy the troublemaker - Almost finished
Post by: Mouth for war on Sun 04/07/2010 14:30:29
FINALLY this game is almost finished :D Began working on it february 2009 so it's been taking quite some time. It's playable from start to finish though. Right now I'm working on the small "sidequest" I've added and I'm also working on other small stuff. I'm playing it from to time to make sure there aren't any annoying bugs :)

Scripting = 98%
Music =  95%
Story = 100%
puzzles, 100%

I've been doing this by myself so that's one reason it's been taking so much time. The game has 73 backgrounds, about 23 characters. I've done some of the music myself and the rest is taken from the music that was included with The games factory. Here are some more screenshots

Thank you :) I did have a demo for it a while back but I've made improvements since then and the site that hosted that file deletes files that hasn't been downloaded for 30 days or so. Now the game is about 200 mb large and I'd think it's difficult to create a demo from the entire game (with all global variables etc.)? The demofiles are long gone too I'm afraid, but I hope you'll play this piece of cr...fabulous game anyway :D

As it seems you aren't going to sell the game anyway, there is no need for a demo, just finish it and release it.. if you do want to sell it, you do might think of a demo.. hehe..

Yes the game will be free for everyone so there's no need for a demo I guess :)

The screenshots look really good and 73 backgrounds... Wow!

A short demo, a trailer, or a gameplay video could help the get you more full game downloads, I think.

How would I make a demo out of that 200 mb file? I can't have ags compile just a part of the game right? Maybe backup copy and remove all rooms that shouldn't be included for a demo maybe can work too?
Title: Re: Jimmy the troublemaker - 99% done

A demo would be unneccesary I think.

Good to hear that you're almost done, I was looking forward to this one. Good luck with the sidequest.

That's exactly what I would do.

Really, the more you'll be teasing people about the game, the more people will get interested in getting the full game later.

but what's the use of a demo for a game that is already free and almost done.. It's better to spend that extra time on polishing the game.. If it where 6 or more months away and it would only take a few hours to create and package the demo, I would say, ok go for it..
Personally the screenshots are enough teasing for me, even if I have to wait another 6 months..

I agree, but if creating the demo takes only deleting some rooms and some sprites folders, then I'd say, go for it. Otherwise, create a video preview instead (can give even better results than a demo).

Anyway, taking a stance on the subject of demo, was just my reaction to yours:

QuoteAs it seems you aren't going to sell the game anyway, there is no need for a demo, just finish it and release it.. if you do want to sell it, you do might think of a demo.. hehe..

Demos and videos make sense not only for commercial games and are a good way in general to make a game better known. Of course making demos and videos takes additional time, so it is not like there isn't a price to consider. But for a big game like Jimmy it might be worth doing.

Off topic: Encouraging downloads for a freeware game is difficult enough, without having to promote a demo AND the full game. If it's nearly finsihed, I'd concentrate on promoting the final package.

On topic: Really like the look of this game - I have a feeling I've played a bit of it and liked it. You've done a very good job to produce detailed, well populated backgrounds at such a high resolution (for an AGS game).

FINALLY MY FRIENDS!!!! Jimmy The Troublemaker is ready after working on it for 1.5 year. I hope it's ready anyway hehe. I've been working on this all by myself and I've looked carefully for bugs etc. I'm only human though so there MIGHT be bugs or missing soundeffects or whatever somewhere, but hopefully not. Let me know if you find something funny about it. I'll provide a download link later tonight I hope and I will announce it in the Completed games section of course. :)
