Title: Johnny Rockett Adventure
Post by: Pixelton on Mon 15/03/2010 21:02:21
Hello Guys.

I'm very green when it comes to AGS and the community...I've not been here long, I've spent a huge amount of time working on MY first Ever Game in AGS!!!!...getting my head round scripting (which is going well) and getting my head around pixel art (...I'm no pixel artist). I think alot of progress has been made so I thought I'd stick it up here.

(Game splash screen)

(Command deck, scene from the intro sequence)

Its my first game so its quite a basic idea where you play Johnny Rocket an undercover Customs agent that has infiltarted a pirate group. When the pirates attack a cargo ship carrying a strange cargo Johnny's cover is blown and he is left for dead. The ship is braking up after the attack and Johnny has to escape!

Things to expect.
* A large intro cutscene which drops the player into the world (**completed**).
* Puzzles will be simple (but fun I hope).
* Lots of unique animations for characters.

Well thats it :)

Marcus.

Love the mock c64 screen.  Rather weird that the game doesn't match the retro color palette/count/reqs of a c64 in any way, but it still looks good!

Excellent pixel art, by the way!:) I'm not crazy about the storyline... but I must admit it's looking great already and I will definitely give it a go when it's released:)

The game looks great.
A couple of things about the loading screen:
- did you spell Commodore wrong deliberately?
- the colour scheme looks more like a VIC-20!
- it should be

READY.
LOAD "JOHNNYROCKET"

PRESS PLAY ON TAPE
LOADING
READY.
RUN

[/Commodore geek mode]

haha theres always one!

It's really just a little company logo kind of splash screen...I needed something (so thats why it kind of doesnt resemble any colour C64 colour pallette. I used to have a C64 and a ZX Specy back in the good old days but your going back some years now since I actually used one :p

I'll fix my little typos on that splash screen Steve cheers for pointing that out :)

Your right...story wise its nothing mind blowing (actually its an idea thats been done about a billion times before!) but I thought....my first game in AGS...I don't want to do anything ambitious. This is really just an excisise for myself in learning how to script and get things rolling within AGS :)

Well thanks guys :)
Marcus.

Actually, I thought it was good (and intentional) that you misspelled Commodore.  It keeps you free to present it as a different computer system/game (like a knock-off brand).

What a terrible rendition of the Commodore Basic screen ;)

Looks more like a PET. But enough of the Nerdiness.
The game looks really nice... I kinda dig the simple yet detailled art style.

Looks very nice, especially the command bridge.
The character sprites have a nice cartoony feel to them and will really make the game visually pleasing if the animation is on-par with what the screenshots leave me to believe.

Looking forward to this!

Thanks Wham

I'm working with a guy called Def and Gravity on a a few puzzle concepts but hope to have the first portion of the game finsihed and released soon. Sadly my desktop computer's mainboard popped on me :( and lost everything so I've had to down-grade to my laptop...luckily Def has my AGS project so not all is lost!

Love the platformer-esque style of the pixel art. Very very good if you are just learning! :)

Hey there Mr. Borg, totally dig on the story idea.  I'm a sucker for anything involving space.

Where are you on the music side of things?

I would be happy to contribute some original tunes to the project if you don't already have the music all figured out.

Check out my studio banner at the bottom there you can hear samples of my work as well as my references, and also here is my page for 'Warmer' http://www.myspace.com/warmer (http://www.myspace.com/warmer)

it's a solo project on the record label 3am Devices.  Think NIN meets radiohead and the muse.

I've done a few original for film scores and am working with Harvester Games on an upcoming project.

please get back to me via

warmer.jesse@gmail.com

I check that address a few times and day and I don't get on AGS daily so that is the quickest form of communication. ;)

Yeah I am after music, alot of the feel and the story has changed since I've been developing it. From seemingly no where some black humour has been injected into it and the character's backstory has changed too....along with the intro sequence. Johnny Rockett has now become a stow-away on the cargo ship.

This has always been more of an excercise in learning AGS (especially the scripting side of things) so game planning...has taken somewhat a backseat (I'm kind of planning things as I go).

Some progress:

I've made some nice death animations for the character now and a GUI 'You have died' window which is displayed on death, thats all working well. Changes to the story and character backgrounds have been made, some dark humour has been injected into the game and the character has become more cowardly.

Another screenshot too (I don't really want to show much more artwork now but I thought...why the hell not? This will probably be the last screengrab until its release.)

Cheers :)

You could have posted one of those death animations? ;)

haha now they have to be a suprise...The game artwork is alittle blurry for some reason when run in fullscreen which is abit odd but I hope to correct this when I figure out that issue.

If it's possible, make sure the player is 'restored' before he dies, so it's not necessary to keep saving..

On the GUI there is a 'Restart, Load and Quit' option so you can just go back to the start after death, I started playing the Space quest game using my Amiga Emulator and as nasty and cruel the game is it really inspired me :)

If you set it to 2x or 3x first, then run at fullscreen it should be better. It's to do with how monitors scale pixels, or something...

Juicy new screenshot:) Looking good!

And if you do get to work with Warmer on the music I can only say he's an incredible artist and some of his songs have this deep sci-fi feel to them...:)

Yeah I'm looking forward to it, sadly he's away from his studio but I can't wait to see what he produces. The only music I have is a few place holder tunes but arn't idea for release. I'm quite excited. I'm probably 2/3rds of the way through the game production but its quite hard to put a percentage on the thing as a whole.

Animation wise I'm pretty much done, I have 2 more rooms I need to build and I have a few puzzles that I need to figure out how to script in but otherwise I don't see why I couldnt have this released very soon.
