Title: Reactor 9
Post by: Bernie on Sun 18/06/2006 16:29:26
(http://www.origamihero.com/r9.gif)

So what the hell is going on in this game?

Escaping from a prison is never easy. But doing it with a correctional officer's consent is even harder. Officer Matthew Holmstett is a walking, talking regulation book and has his own set of ideals. Getting him to do what you want won't be an easy task - even if it's saving the city from a certain threat. Don't make him angry, or you may find yourself handcuffed to a radiator very fast. Nobody trusts someone convicted for murder that easily after all...

Features

-Info GUI to learn more about the world around you.

-'Trust' bar showing how much Matthew believes in what you tell him. Doing or saying something stupid to him will reduce it and you may end up not getting as far as you wanted.

-Fast and simple to use verb coin GUI

-3 endings

-Medium length (a tad longer than Cedric and the Revolution)

You suck for not finishing Hero Theorem yet!

I'm aware of that. Thank you, conscience.

Release date/State

The game is ~70% complete. Release date? No idea.

Hehe, seriously this game looks just as good as any other game you've made (and your games are usually quite promising) and I'm really waiting to see it. Good luck. :)

Big projects are a no-no for me. I can't stick with them long enough. Now I'm trying to finish something smaller and see how well that goes.

This sounds like fun, the graphics look good, and there's not too long to wait--yay! ^_^
I'm just curious: if you lose the officer's trust, he won't do stuff... so will there be a lot of deadends in this game?

Looks fantastic so far Bernie. And some nice ideas there too with the "Trust Bar" and such.

Seems you have a real talent for making adventure games.
Looking forwards to playing it.
Keep up the good work.

[nag] And don't forget about getting back to work on Hero Theorem after this.Ã,  ;D [/nag]

Quoteso will there be a lot of deadends in this game?

No deadends, but it will affect the end and how much of the game you'll get to play. Getting the best ending will take a bit of additional work.

Okay-o! HT is something I'll definitely finish.

That's what you said when you stopped City of Fortune.
Is it some kind of fetish to throw everything away and start from scratch?

(I understand that its not a fun hobby to work on something that you lost intrest in)

I don't want to discuss this in a GiP thread. I'll be happy to answer any questions about the game this thread was made for, however. :)

Feel free to PM or email me if something is bothering you.

Your games are the best ones in these community...at least "your game"
And if you ever finish one of your GiP I know they will be AMAZING too...

I can't wait to play this game, your style is AWESOME.

The game deals with chemical reactions, physics and a power station of sorts.

Yey! A game that deals with physics!! I'm gonna love that!

If you need help with some quantum mechanics or nuclear physics for this game, feel free to PM me! (I have a degree in engineering physics)

Post by: Bernie on Thu 22/06/2006 22:49:26
Thanks for the offer! :)

I'm not doing anything very advanced, it's just the kind of physics used in production technology and in analysis and control engineering (that's what my job is about, mostly). The power station in the game isn't a nuclear one, too. I made up a somewhat different kind of power station for this game.

i'm guessing its mostly GlobalInts for the Trust thing, which aren't too hard once you've got the grip of them... maybe even points.

The code isn't very complex. I used my modules to handle some of the tougher stuff (NoBlock, Background Speech), the rest is mostly a bunch of customized GUIs and a custom following function.

The trust bar was made with a slider. All I need to do is compare what the current slider value is and trigger an action depending on that.

I finished the puzzles for the first part of the game, making the game about 40% finished. I must admit that playing KQ3VGA and Trilby's Notes certainly didn't speed up the development progress... :)

Looking very good! Also, two or three weeks before release is an excellent time to start promoting your game because I'll probably still be interested by the time you release it!

The Trust system is a great idea but I'm expecting it to be incredibly easy to lose trust and almost impossible to gain it...oh well I guess that's how it works.

Post by: Bernie on Thu 27/07/2006 19:14:23
The game is about 50% complete now.

Right now I'm busy with summer things (vacations, putting off a little bit of weight, cycling & other outdoor stuff and maybe even finding the love of my life), so progress on the game has stagnated and will stay that way until the weather's bad.

Oh, and putting off weight isn't as hard as I thought. I went from 84 kg to 78 kg in five weeks. Go, me! :D

See you around~

Hey Bernie,

This looks like it will be a brilliant game!  The graphics look top-notch, and the central idea is very original - I love the idea of being anchored to an NPC whose behaviour, and therefore the progression of the entire game, is related directly to the actions you take!  That kind of thing can really help you immerse yourself in the world of the game.

Best of luck with finishing it!

What a great looking game! I enjoyed Cedric and this one looks just a good. Your backgrounds look excellent - a really nice use of color.

Good luck with finishing this up. But do make sure you get out and enjoy the summer - although it doesn't sound like that's a problem for you!  :)

Hey Bernie..... This game looks like it is going to be great! The graphics are most reminescent of the ones from Cedric and The Revolution. Which i thought had really nice backgrounds and good animation. I have a bad habit (yours is not completing games that you are making) of not finishing AGS games that I start playing! LOL!!! I find that a lot the games that I download don't hold my interest, so I hope this will not be the case with this fine looking game. I am glad to know that the game may be a little shorter then most people would like but that the game won't be filled with illogical puzzles and pointless conversations just to make the game longer (I've found this to be true with a lot of AGS games). Keep up the good work and don't enjoy that summer too much, you have work to do.....

Thewalrus

Goo, goo, ga, joob!!!

Hello, AGS Forums.

The weather is plenty bad these days, so I worked on this some more. (I also pretty much finished a different game project not related to AGS, but more about that some other time.)

Current status:

5 of 5 characters finished
18 of 23 backgrounds finished
50% of the puzzles done

Well, well, well.... It's about time we got an update from you. Glad to hear that the project is moving forward. I'm really excited about this game. Nice screenshot! Keep up the good luck Bernie! I know that your game will be of the highest quality.

Thank you! :D I'm not sure about the highest quality thing, but I hope the game will at least be fun.

Progress update: All backgrounds are finished. Go, me. On to scripting the game's last half.

Wow..thats excellent news  :o, I cant wait to play another of your games, you're one my favourite game makers  :P

Edit: I was wondering, is there a possibility  for me to translate Cedric and The Revolution?, there are lots of Spanish-speaking gamers who would really like to play your game...
Title: Re: Reactor 9
Post by: Bernie on Wed 15/11/2006 18:14:22
Thanks! A translation won't be possible with Cedric and Reactor 9 since both use a custom talking command frequently. AGS doesn't recognize those, making translations using AGS' language features impossible.

I'm not sure if there's another solution. Editing the game directly would definitely not be a good one.

Post by: Bernie on Sun 19/11/2006 23:47:41
The game is nearing completion pretty fast. All that's left to do is the endgame and the 3 different endings.

Current status:

5 of 5 characters finished
23 of 23 backgrounds finished
85% of the puzzles done

Done in a week or two, I'd say, depending on how well the beta phase will be going. And no screenshots this time. HA! :=

Hey wow, a triple post. Just dropping by to say that the game is done. The beta phase is starting now. It's a short game, so this shouldn't take very long.

I played through the game a few times and it seems kinda short. It's pretty weird, too, and I had trouble doing the dialogues. Hope I'm not gonna disappoint anyone with this game.
