Title: Robert Louis Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND
Post by: The Faction on Sun 04/12/2005 16:44:55
As a tribute to the huge role pirate stories have played in the history of adventure games
I have decided to make a game of probably the most famous and influential pirate story ever written.

Robert Louis Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND

I am including the Robert Louis Stevenson as part of the title to make clear to everyone my
desire to keep the action in the game as close as possible to the action in the story. Of course puzzles will be added to make it an actual game and certain small details will be changed to accomodate my mediocre drawing and scripting skills.

I am sure most of you are familiar with the plot but for those who are not here is a brief description. After meeting an old pirate Jim Hawkins and some men from his town come across a treasure map.Ã,  They set out to the Carribean in search of the treasure only to have their ship taken over by pirates which they had mistakenly hired as crewmen.Ã,  Now on the island the two groups must engage in a battle of wits and strength to determine who gets the treasure and who gets marooned on the island. I won't give away the ending here for those who haven't read the book.

Progress:
BG'sÃ,  15%
Characters & Animation 25%
Music And Sound 15%
Plot 75%
Scripting 25%

By the time the game is finished it should probably have around 40 rooms and 20 characters of which 2 will be playable and be at least a medium length game. Since I am committed to this being a great game don't expect it to be finished until at least the middle of next year.

Bye for now
Nicholas

Looks good, and seems like a good source, I must say! I allways liked Treasure Island. My advise, more for critics lounge than GiP, is for you to try to disguise better the MI backgrounds you are using to trace, buut seems you are archieving something, if we look to the 2nd BG. Good luck with this.

P.S. Great post Hammerite!  ;D

Yay, another pirate adventure! This looks awesome. I've never heard of such a book, but I'm gonna play this game anyway when it's released since I like all Monkey Island type of games! :)

In answer to some of the questions posed in your responses...
Yes Farlander this game will be heavily "inspired" by MI. However I will not be using any traced backgrounds.  The exterior shot in the 1st BG was hand drawn though it still probably qualifies as a MI ripoff  ;).  I do look at the MI backgrounds when making my own but mostly for things like color usage, character design, and detail ideas. Sslaxx, as I said in my original post I will be trying to keep the game as close as possible to the book. It would be impossible however to include every detail from the book so some scenes will be changed, mostly to keep the number of backgrounds I have to draw manageable.  Also doing a word for word adaptation of the book would leave no room for puzzles and what is an adventure game without puzzles.

Since I didn't mention it in my first post the game will be in 640x480 resolution and use MIDI music.

Thanks for your responses,
Nicholas   ;D

I thought that the second image, the first ingame BG, was traced over Smirk's house. But, as said, the canteen Bg looks very good and atmospheric, and it has no signs of "tracing" :). Another minor crit is that the blimp cam" view of the island combines two different resolutions, and it looks weird. But this are all minor crits, I think you know well how to manage.

Good luck...  ;)

Hello again everyone.Ã,  I know its been awhile since I've posted news about the game but I've had a few setbacks. In January the power supply on my old system went out and instead of just getting a new one I decided to get a new system.Ã,  Add starting a new job to transfering all my files and I've had little time to work on the game.Ã,  It is still in production however and hopefully I can get it out sometime this year.

Here are some characters to prove I've been working. ;)

Hi there, excellent idea for a game! I love that book too.

Yes Farlander this game will be heavily "inspired" by MI.

Please don't inspire yourself more that you would inspire yourself from Tootsie when filming Jaws... I mean it's a completely different type of story - MI is a relaxing parody, while Treasure Island is a chilling/thrilling pirate adventure.

Trying to copy the graphic style, and worst of all, style of humor, would be a BIG mistake. Throw away MI and rather get a Treasure Island book and movie for a reference.

Cheers
