Title: Sam & Max: The Case Gilbert - Screenshots & Demo
Post by: on Wed 24/09/2003 18:29:20
I'm Italian, sorry for the mistakes! ;)

LAST RELEASE DATE: Italian version December 2003, English Version 2004
__________________________________________________________________
STORY
The phone ring. Is the commissioner, with a new mission: find a man was be abducted. But this man is not an ordinary man, and neither the agents, that are responsible for the case, aren't an ordinary agents. Why? Because they are Sam & Max! Now in search for Ron Gilbert.

INFO
I've decided to create the game like the original, with resolution at 320x200. In this way, I can use some Backgrounds of the original game and the sprites of Sam & Max. In fact, in the demo you can see the office and the out-office. But in the complete version, the rest of the background are made by me (how is possible to see in the screenshots), and also the characters.
The hardest part in the creation of this game in fact, is create backgrounds like the original: a long operation...

The story and dialogs instead, was be created by my friend Iena (Hyena in english) and it's original and funny (in the demo there's not much of this unfortunately).

This sounds very promising! Too bad that the demo is  Italian, I only understand, english, dutch and german.

Can you see any possibility in translating the demo into english?

Your screenshots look promising, and so does the plot.

I couldn't do much excpet walk around the office, get the gun  and open the window... have I missed something?

I have tested it. It was a funny intro and good catch and timing of music and sound effects, however you have made a couple of misses.

1: You haven't translated the save and load function from italian to english.

2: You forgot the quit button, I had to restart the PC in order to get out of the game.

Spoiler
3: I understood what I was going to do when I got the gun because of the comissioner but since you go downstairs you get any furhter. I mean should you really get stuck in a demo just like that? I don't think so, it should at least end. Maybe like after you shot the bird Sam and Max would say something like "Well Max, let's get that mission paper!" "Then let's go!" "We can't!" "What the heck are you talking about, Sam?" "This is a demo-game." "Oh yeah.".
[close]

4: It would be more fun if you had more hotspots in the office.

Anyway, I thought that Sam do that karate-like-kick at Max when he tries go get the phone was funny. The music sound like it comes from a movie or a wrestling-match which adds even more fun to it. Oh how I laughed.

Good luck on finish the game, it seems like to be even better than orignal Sam & Max: Hit the Road.

I apologize, but I was just asking the author if he needed help translating the game from Italian to English since I can speak both languages.

I also told him that I helped convert the new adventures of Zak McKracken into Italian.

I was writing it in Italian to demonstrate that I could speak and write it well.

Your game is really great! I enjoyed it, it has much of the humor of the original game.
I mailed you some days ago, why didn`t you answer? I am in contact with Danilo, too. I offered him to do a german translation. If you send me the language file, I'll translate it in german.

And if you followed their example it would be "The Case of the Missing Adventure Game Programmer" or "The Case of the Gilbert Kidnapping" see here (http://www-users.itlabs.umn.edu/classes/Fall-2001/csci8101/wwwboard/messages/149.html) or  here  (http://www.cnn.com/US/9702/04/simpson.verdicts/)

or just "The Gilbert Case"

Hey, don't ask me why its that way round in the idiom! I don't make the rules. Anyway, English changes the rules every 5 minutes as I am sure you are realising. My wife is Spanish and has similar problems sometimes.

QuoteIt's true Mats, but I have create the demo in a little time, so I do some errors... and however I hit Alt+F4 for exit from the game.

I see but I think you should make the quit command instead, I mean not everyone is familiar to Alt+F4, adventure gamers are not used to do this in adventure games and in the original Sam & Max there was a quit button.

I agree with SSH that it should be The Gilbert Case. It is more dective or police in that way, which is pretty obvious since Sam and Max are freelance police and detecive spree is a part of their job.

Great Geoffkhan! Then we have Europe's No 1 language (German, 93 Million native speakers), no 2 (English, 61 Million) and no 4 (Italien, 58 Million). I think baby-language is also very common.
What about french (59 Million)?

Your numbers aren't quite right:

German, the native tongue of more than 90 million Germans and Austrians. Second is French, the main language of more than 65 million people in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Monaco.

English ranks third as an EU primary language, with approximately 63 million speakers in Britain and Ireland.

see: http://www.visiteurope.com/language.html and http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/policies/lang/languages/lang/barolang_en.pdf

Post by: Mats Berglinn on Tue 07/10/2003 17:21:26
By the way, there is a story error in the game. Max says something like "The comissioner thought that saving a tribe of hairy bigfoots was importaint too." but that's not quite right since the saving of the bigfoot tribe wasn't Sam & Max main mission, it was bringing back Bruno the bigfoot and Trixie the giraffnecked girl back to the carneval. Saving the bigfoot tribe was only a side thing they did without been ordered from the Comissioner.

It is difficult to get reliable numbers for French because it is spoken in many countries.
German is also mother tongue for many Swiss.
Perhaps your numbers are correctly, perhaps mine.
Isn't so important either.

Of course, you're right: it isn't very important. I didn't mean to be pedantic: I just got interested in how many there were and went off and found the numbers on the EU website!

This was a fun demo! :D

Btw... Since it's Sam & Max we're talking about here, do this:

1. Use the same font as in the original.
2. A response on every action
3. A bit more smooth animations

The humor is there!
Nicely done!

Hope to see this finished!
Good luck! :D

But then if you count the number of people who speak english in other parts of the world (since the EU does not make up the whole world!) you would probably notice that english would be the most used language. Since America uses it and Australia and canada and new zealand and several other places.

And it would be the Gilbert Case. not case gilbert.

And you should be able to press ctr-q to bring up the quit screen in any ags game.

great "demo". My only "thing" was that the animation was too slow. You need to "equalise" their animation speed and their movement speed. this will stop them "looking" like they are "moonwalking". Also, make sure that the "text" in the intro is "skippable" because it stays on the scree too "long". I "love"  speech marks

Yeah, from what I understand, the game has been completed in Italian - it just needs to be translated, which has been started.  It'll get done; I know we're all impatient, cause Sam and Max just kicks so much ass....... but good things are worth waiting for, and don't worry - LucasArts won't cancel this one........

Mar85 can we get any info on the status of the project? Even in slightly broken English I found the jokes hilarious, identical to Hit The Road! According to your profile (http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?action=profile;u=1446) you were on the boards yesterday, so I hope you get this  8)

Yes, but he says in the initial topic 'My Site(not updated for long time)', also that the release date for the Italian version is 'December 2003' and finally talks about a lot of stuff that you 'don't see in the demo' but do in the finished game. Also, what Blackthorne said. And Joseph DiPerla said he had 'a good chunk of the game translated.'

OTOH, Joseph also spoke for Mar85 finishing 'as his life permits' implying that Mar had not finished the project yet.

So a confirmation from either of you guys would clear things up for me, thanks :)

Could somebody please tell me what was written about this game in "the inventory"?

I have a 33bps connection, so I don't like to download things I don't essentially need.

From "The Inventory": Issue 16

Title Screen

Lucasarts might be dead, but Sam and Max are not!
The crazy duo is coming back to our computer
screens with the help of some Italian dedicated
fans who know better than the management of
Lucasarts what constitutes a great title. Sam and
Max: Case Gilbert is going to be an adventure loyal
to the original Sam and Max with a very similar
style in graphics.

The team behind the sequel has recently released a
demo in the AGS forums. The game starts with
our duo having just solved one more case. A butler
after murdering someone in a mansion makes a last
minute escape. At the same time he has placed a
bomb under the mansion to kill all its residents -
andÃ,  hisÃ,  formerÃ,  employees.Ã,  TheÃ,  famousÃ,  duoÃ,  does
not have time to wait for payment and decide to
head back to their office before the bomb
explodes. When they come back, the phone rings.
(By the way you really have to watch that, its
hilariousÃ,  youÃ,  willÃ,  understandÃ,  whenÃ,  youÃ,  seeÃ,  it).
On the phone it is theÃ,  commissionerÃ,  whoÃ,  hasÃ,  a
new case for the crazy duo, to find an abducted
man.Ã,

Violence is still an integral part of a Sam and Max story

But this man is not just any man in the world, this
man is Rob Gilbert! Rob has been abducted by
GeorgeÃ,  DucasÃ,  whoÃ,  isÃ,  inÃ,  needÃ,  ofÃ,  hisÃ,  best
programmer.Ã,  AsÃ,  youÃ,  mightÃ,  haveÃ,  already understood
from the names used the, game is a
parody. Players will get to visit the Ducas Arts
Palace, to uncover the secrets contained in it, to
visit the office of Rob Gilbert and much more.

Chester looks very happy for some reason

They solved it again

From the demo of the game it is evident that the
interface used is the same with the original Sam
and Max: Hit the Road. For those of you who are
not familiar with the original Sam and Max here is
a description of the interface.

Your cursor can change into different shapes, each
oneÃ,  ofÃ,  themÃ,  representingÃ,  aÃ,  differentÃ,  command.
The commands you can give are: Walk, Look, Use
Talk, Get. On the bottom left corner of the screen
there is a picture of an open box. When you click
on it the inventory screen pops up. There you can
see all your items and you can also manipulate
them by selecting one of the commands on the top
of the screen.

The developers were hesitant to give an estimate
for the final release as the game is being made by
just two people. They are also thinking of splitting
the game in two parts and releasing the first one
earlier and the second one at a later stage.
Although as you will see in the demo, some
backgrounds of Case Gilbert are taken from the
original Sam and Max (like the office for example)
the developers promised to use a large number of
original backgrounds and characters. The
developers are going to use a 320x240 resolution in
order for the new graphics to blend in seamlessly
with the old graphics. The music is also going to be
a mixture of themes from Hit the Road as well as
originalÃ,  musicÃ,  createdÃ,  byÃ,  theÃ,  developersÃ,  forÃ,  the
purposes of Case Gilbert.

There they go, down the stairs

Their adventures are never pain-free

If you want to try Case Gilbert yourselves you can
download the English or the Italian demo from
http://digilander.libero.it/bisland/s&micg.html.
My only complaint on Case Gilbert (based on the
demo) is the translation in English which is poor to
sayÃ,  theÃ,  least.Ã,  SometimesÃ,  itÃ,  isÃ,  veryÃ,  difficultÃ,  to
understand what the characters are saying. I hope
that the developers will "hire" someone fluent in
English to help them with the translation. There
are also some bugs in the demo but we all expect
them to be wiped out before the final release. So
get your mice warmed up for a new adventure with
the most discussed adventure duo in the past year.
Sam and Max are coming back.Ã,

- Dimitris Manos

Thanks man.

Also, WOW!
Something tells me that something will still go wrong though...
Maybe I'm just pessimistic.

Hmm, there's a pretty clear distinction between the BGs nabbed from the first game and the new ones. Could do with some more detail!
Nice characters though.

Will the game ever be completed? Or is it finally cancelled?

Okay, I know this is a case of Necromancy here, but perhaps we can garner some answers this way:

I was wondering if this game was completed, and/or translated.  I know Joeseph DiPerla was doing the English Translation.  Maybe he, or Mar (the creator) could shed some light.  I was really looking forward to this game.

BTW, is there a Sam and Max gui floating around at all?  Just curious.

ANYWAY, if Joeseph or Mar are still out there, an update on the game would be cool.  I don't think I'm the only one who loves Sam and Max stuff.

Blackthorne - did you send PMs to these guys?

I'm going to assume, given the inactivity of this thread, that this project is dead.

Mar (or whoever) if you're still working on it and want me to unlock this thread, so you can give an update, please let me know.
