Title: The Chronicles of the shoe - Finally back under production (working demo)
Post by: mwahahaha on Tue 20/12/2005 23:43:51

Basically, in The Chronicles of the shoe, you play a strange man named Jirb who is obsessed with the cereal "Bran O's".  Upon meeting a certain celebrity at the local deli and barganing to obtain his left shoe you soon must embark on a quest to return it.  Many strange characters also must aid you on your quest, such as Nerds, the Mafia and shopkeepers in duck costumes.

I intend to have it as a 3 part series eventually with each part a new playable character.

In Part 1, "Choking Hazard" you embark on a quest to find the shoe's owner, being forced into doing the mafias dirty work in the process.

Anyway, here's a screenshot of one of the cutscenes, which I'm trying to give a Sin City-esque art style to with limited colours.

But the rest of the game is fairly standard.

I have a rather buggy (I've already fixed most of them, but not in the distributed version) test demo of the opening working, but it doesn't even have much real content in it.Ã,  Contact me on MSN if you'd like to have a go at playing it.

My hotmail is: contipated_gnomby@hotmail.com

OK, to explain some of the basic storyline for the first part of the first game:

After the introduction in which you obtain the Shoe, you then bargain with the Mafia, who have captured you, to achieve you're freedom.Ã,  Basically, you have to set up some traps to try and cause the death of a guy called Domitri.Ã,  After a few ridiculous shenanegins, the Mafia get's pissed off at your lack of ability to set up the aforementioned traps and they set you on to lesser projects...

Let's just say that heads will roll, literally.

More story updates soon.

The game is around 25% done I guess.

OK, I've got a reasonable length on the game now (almost an hour I guess) if anyone wants to test it out, just contact me and I'll get a demo organised.

Also, could anyone tell me a good way of getting sound effects? (footsteps, ect.) Thanks!

Do you have a mic? For some of my sound effects I literally record me doing the desired effect.

or, maybe there are free sound effects on the net. Try googling for it.

Lastly, if you don't mind the potential legalities, you used to be able to buy sound effects on audio cds!

I would absolutely LOVE to play a game that you thought was "strange", "whacky" and/or "weird".

Looks enjoyable. Apart from the fact that my head nearly exploded when I saw the second screenshot. I can't wait.

In case you haven't found it during your Googling yet... there's www.findsounds.com, with which I've had some good luck in the past.

EDIT: Whoops, I was just looking at the name of the replies. Nevermind. ;D

Okay, it's sort of off topic, but I just completed a short game that I was doing for that MAGS competition, enjoy!

Search for Veteran's Rampage under mags games on the database here.

It's very short and really average, but a fun little experience with a nice "beat-box" soundtrack.Ã,  Yes, every sound effect was made with my voice. :)

Post by: mwahahaha on Wed 11/01/2006 10:57:14
After working quite a bit over the last few days I am now around about a third of the way through making it, I just have a few holes in the story to fill and that should be done, graphics are about 50% done and sound is, this far, basically non-existant, however, it's coming along quite nicely.

Sorry about the bad quality, the pics are Jpegs.

The version I got the screens off was a slightly older version, but the differences are minimal.

Veeeery interesting! The supermarker screenshot gave the impression that the game has white minimal scenery throughout, hence why i asked to see more, and now I see it's just that shop, which is just as well...

'cos the screenies you just posted look a lot better!  ;)

I'm going to redo most of the early environments a little later, because they were quite scratchy and I was still getting used to working with AGS and now I'm managing to put a lot more detail in and make them a whole lot smoother.  I also still have to work on the zoom levels in some of the environments.
Title: Re: The Chronicles of the shoe - Part 1 30% DONE
Post by: mwahahaha on Sun 15/01/2006 01:14:43
The demo should be out by Wednesday, it features the intro and chapter 1 called "the slip".

Also here are the chapter names, open to speculation.

Chapter 1: The Slip
Chapter 2: Inanimacy
Chapter 3: Double back
Chapter 4: Infiltration
Chapter 5: Titanium Cog

If anyone can tell me the video game series reference in one of those titles I'll be happy to let you be one of the beta testers when that comes around.

To give you an idea of the legth of the game, knowing exactly what to do, it still takes me around 45 minutes to play through the demo, so I assume that it would take around 1 hour 15 minutes or so if you needed to figure stuff out... I guess.

In the interests of avoiding distraction, I have made the executive decision to release the demo without music or sound TODAY.

I will post the link as soon as I've uploaded it.

NOTE: there's a good chance of a re-release with sound, but not straight away.

If anyone has played it, please tell me what you think.Ã,  Also, I found a problem in one of the rooms towards the end, making it impossible to actually finish the game.Ã,  There should be a patched version soon.

Also: STORY UPDATE!

After being kicked out of the mafia, Jirb continues on his quest to find mario.  Upon stumbling across a warehouse and discovering a top secret project, the army kidnap him and force him into their ranks.

Okay, I played up until the the first chapter started. (I PM'ed you about the file thing)

I like the crazy world, and the main character looks different enough from any game character I can think of!

Here are my crits/suggestions:

1)The character's walk speed could do with being sped up slightly.
2)The Black cursor often makes it hard to make out where the cursor is sometimes and what action you are on.
3)There is a definite lack of interaction with the world. I hope you put in more things for Jirb to respond to.
4)Does Jirb need to be clickable? Unless there is a puzzle where you need to use items on Jirb it's annoying when he stands in front of things. (Can be said for any game with this feature)
5)He could really do with a walk down and walk up animation! Don't be lazy!
6)You should animate the smoke in that room.

I hope I don't sound too negative, I just want to help you make your game even better!

Yeh, I've heard a lot of those critisisms before for friends, ect.  With the walk speed, I'll get right on it as well as the down animation.
I'll get onto the interaction when I remake the opening a bit later.
The cursors will alos be changed asap, I might even just put a red dot where the cursor point is or something.

To describe the bug, basically there's a area that is taller that 320 pixels, and I forgot to move the top boundry down a little.  Other than that, it's fine as far as major bugs go (except that sometimes you jump from the first room straight to the third... oddly enough).

The demo V1.2 is available to download today.

Changes include:
A down animation for the main character.
Fixed the game ruining problem with room 26
A new GUI for the top of the screen which is far more compact and functional.
Changed the code so that right click opens the inventory window.
Made the coin easier to pick up.
Added red dots to the cursors to make them easier to see.

Unless you haven't noticed, I've come up with a new name for Part 1, "Choking Hazard".

In other news, I'm seeking feedback on the version 1.2 demo.  So please tell me if you liked it, didn't like it, it was to hard, or any other complaints.

Anywho... I got fed up with the bad environments early on so I decided to remake them, starting with Jirbs house.Ã,
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/mwahahaha10/bedroomscreen.jpg)

The laptop will serve some purpose, but I'm not sure what it will be yet.

Also, a lot of the characters are now getting improved walking, talking and idle animations, as well as the story being pushed ahead and various other new additions and changes.

If you mean to ask, "Is the game a ridiculous and funny game?" Then yes.  But if you mean "Is this just all one big joke?" Then no, why the hell would I have bothered with a 1 and a half hour demo? (NOTE: demo only 1.5 hours if you play slowly... or get lost)

Ok, I know its been almost 2 years, but I've finally started work on the game again.

Firstly, I fixed the demo completely, and it now works. (with the right starting room, etc.)

When I tried downloading and playing it, it work fine except that the resolution appears to have bugged in some stage of the process, if anyone else gets this problem, let me know and I'll try to fix it.

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=671

and yes the early environments still need work.

EDIT: Ok, I tried making the file a .zip and putting in the setup exe, should work fine now.
Title: Re: The Chronicles of the shoe - Finally back under production (working demo)
Post by: mwahahaha on Thu 15/11/2007 07:24:08
Well, news from the production trail, I've fixed most of the notable graphical issues associated with chapter one, as well as removing a room and adding some finishing touches to some of the rooms.  Simularly, the first puzzle or so of chapter 2 are complete, but at teh moment the game ends with a room where you can't do anything that I made back when I first worked on the game.

As I begin to create new environments and characters I'll be posting some screenies, probably in the next few weeks.

Yeh, I did too after my computer got wiped, but I recently finished a fair bit of stuff and decided to bring it back... hopefully my artistic and writing talent has improved in the last 2 years.  I seem to have debugged it pretty well thus far... we'll see how it goes with recreating the first part of the game from when I was still getting used to it.
