Tis a game about death. I.E you die right at the start. You play the unfortunate role of D.I (Detective Inspector) Idalo, who, in his wisdom, gets shot and goes to the netherworld, only when he gets there he sees it's more than just fire and brimstone.
I'd like to thank Proskrito for his great SCUMM templates that make my job (graphics, coding, story, the lot) a LOT easier.
I actually have something to show for it too!!

Office, (lamp needs redoing, looks crap with resize)
Inconspicuous murders await!
All post below may seem irrelevant now!
EDIT: Put up some different pics as I couldnt find the old ones.
EDIT2: The Idalo sprite looks crap, Im working on a new one which you can see later on in the thread:P
Or now:
I also redid the office and corridoors to fit him, but thats for later:P
Seems pretty cool. And any game with swearing in is bound to be good ;)
I take it from the scouser and DI references that you're a Brit, and that the game's characters will be too?
Wow, this looks great. And I like the direction the plot is going!
Please finish this.
Well,
I am british, the characters will be British.
But Im not the best a programming, so I'll have to get my mate to help out. but the SCUMM template's helped alot and it looks good.
I really like your are style, and the story sounds very interesting too. Could you perhaps reveal a little more about it?
Well, without revealing too much, after you die, you go to the netherworld and immediatly begin setting out to try and find out who killed you and why (when you get knocked out you dont usually remember what happened, dying is most likely similar), only discovering that your death was much more than just murder.
As to finishing it quickly, unless I get some help, this will be some time in the works.
P.S Aga, you might be pleased to know that the police chief is going to be a welsh hippy (dont ask).
This idea interests me, if only because I have a similar, yet different thing in mind.
In what way?
*And again...
Anyone wondering who Virgin is, throw a stone, chances are you'll hit something they have ownership rights to.
I dont know the rules on double posting here, but none of my edits were showing up.
Hey, this game looks great pal! I love the original-looking graphics. You certainly have a sleek design taste!
Keep up the great work!
Your pal, Daz.
I like detective games with a twist! keep up the good work.
Erm, the graphical style is like that in Day of The Tentacle, I just applied my own twist to it.
Thanks for all your support!
P.S: I just noticed i spelt "to" wrong on the last screen, it was late, I was tired etc.
Hey,
Im a friend of chris' this game looks great m8, must say thought it really is like indy 4 and the monkey islands. But nice looking graphics I just hope that the game play is just as good.
And dont forget conquer :p
Anyways good luck with it, there just aint enough point and click adventures anymore, especially British ones. WE ROCK. HAHAHA italy we beat you bad.
Dan
Well, im getting my mate Tim (who's been playing adventure games for a long time) to help me think of some deviously nasty puzzles.
The chances of this, a two man project being as good as any of the games it got it's heritage from is next to none, you can't beat the good ol' Lucasarts games.
Phew, it's been a while, and almost no progress made, I'm thinking of not using Proskrito's SCUMM template, as I'm not sure how to get the Open, Close, Give etc functions working.
The only real progress I've made is finished all the main chara sprites and a new background.
Well here I am, on the Darksiders yet again, done a new avatar from my new <dead> chara which gives you a small idea of what he'll look like (just change a few things, like skin/jacket colour and you've got it)
I'm not gonna post up ever new BG I do, but I have done one more which is just the second part of that corridor.
Sorry, daily transfer limit, is 5mb, and Im using my host for much more than The Darksiders, if something doesn't show up try again later...
Anyone got an idea where I can get a better Image host,
Im actually thinking of taking the old screens down here as they are now irrelavent...
I have done, but fear not, I'm having an entire Ripway account set aside for DS screenies, so It shouldn't be too much of a prob, hopefully....
This looks and sounds pretty damn intresting. Keep it up, I'll be waiting for the full game.
you may be waiting for a while, I wanna get a few graphics out of the way before I start <shudder>programming<endshudder> the game, I've said before Im not the best at programming, so I'll get some help off a few friends with "THAT" part!
imageshack.us
Man, thats handy.
Ok, I've hit a snag, the rooms import awesomely well, and the lighting is all done, I did a new main chara, but he sucks, I wanna get a demo out soon, so should I use the old Idalo, from the first test game I made, just to get on with it, and then replace all the frames later when I've redone him in a new style. Heres the new style:
but the anims suck, so I'll work on those post demo, I already have a perfectly usable guy, just looks too cartoony for the new style.
If you need a little help with programming, you can PM me. I won't program your entire game, but I could do maybe about 3-5 max things that you wouldn't feel like doing yourself.
:)
wow, someone who read the whole thread.
Thanks for the offer, I might take it up if I need to.
clueless,
this looks really good...would love to test it...i probably couldn't help with programing tho'.
Ok, I've now done the GUI, nothing special, just the original with redrawn graphics, but I was wondering,Ã, how do I get a bit of text at the bottom of the screen that says what the mouse is hovering over?
-Edit, sod it, thanks to the friendly people at the tech forum, I know have it, and it appears unobtusivly at the bottome of the screen
(http://img29.exs.cx/img29/4875/dsscreens.png)
Just a GUI shot, Im using the default GUI, as it looks nice enough.Ã, And the bar at the bottom is for the hotspot names.
What he says is likely to change, it just knocked all the graphics I've done so far together to get some pretty screens.Ã, As I'm pretty sure something similar is said of doors in 5 Days...
Also Ghostface, I notice you have a music icon, is that MIDI, MP3 or OGG??
I could use some...
;D Clueless, most of my music is mp3...i have alot of MIDIs and a few OGGs. Just tell me what you need!
Lovely Update
I now have the story worked out.Ã, And I'm keeping it to myself, its kinda got a twist to it.Ã, But anyway, done some new backgrounds, most of them aren't too interesting, just some corridoors, but this one I thought was pretty, its the ship that takes Idalo to the afterlife:
*bump*
Sorry to bring this up, but this game looks so good.
Just wondering how it's coming along. :)
By the way, what progrm are you using to make those backgrounds?
great, and thanks for bumping it up, does anyone know where I can get a freeware AVI Movie maker that I can make movies from static images?
try fraps.com
Fraps is for recording movies I believe, my bro uses it on Renegade, no I mean, I want to do an intro video..
I live!!!
After months of what I'd best call a block (ok getting drunk and going on crazy punk rock adventures), Trying out new background making methods (messing around on the unreal editor and trying to buy a scanner) I've finally started work on the Darksiders again.
Inconspicuous murders await!
Just some random BG which I thought turned out quite well.
But anyways, I may, if you guys are lucky, and most of you aren't, release a small demo soon, but I need to do some more characters, it'll basically take you up to the point of his death.
Peace out, I'm going to bed!
Huzzuh! Cant wait for this game Cluey.
every great artist has a great style of art.... your style looks differnt and good . and most important point you have your own style i am waiting more details about this game
good luck
(http://img119.exs.cx/img119/4497/nmare1qm.png)
Yawn, I tire of Backgrounds, here's some new characters to see...
First up, we have the nightmare, one of the most feared killers in the world right up until his death in 1886, he's spent his time in limbo, and even amongst the occupants there, he's feared.
Second, we have a Receptionist at the Police station, in her drab clothes and simple mind, she's happy...
Just wondering, does the player actually get to kill people? ::) I've been watching this game (not too closely, but close enough) and you don't cease to amaze me with your style. It's crazy-kinda-awesome. This is one game that I actually am awaiting... None too patiently either, so hurry it up! ;D
This looks great! I LOVE your BG's, the angles and effects are way cool. I'm a sucker for blur and glare myself (or 'post-processing effects' as they are called in the 3d-games world. Which makes no sense because how can you add effects after you process the current onscreen image. ::)).
Good luck, hope to see something playable soon.
I'm ALIVE???
Wow, so much has happened lately, basically, friends have fallen out, mad up, lost touch, got stressed...
I'm still unchanged....
Tis a new background, part of the harbour town:
Newness!
I needed to edit the old Grim Reaper dude, to fit in, but this guy looks more like a work experience dude, (who was originally gonna be just a floating ball but meh, stuff changes)
A very rough reception, I'll refine it later...
Heh! That reaper guy looks like your avatar.Ã, :P
Great job by the way. I really can't wait to play this.Ã, :)
Updated Reception..
I quite like the style but personally i think there's a little too much of the photoshop lighting effects involved. It does suit in some situations, but i think the fact that every available lightsource has the same 'trick' is slight overkill. Just my opinion though so dont take it to heart. Characters are cool though, keep it all up!
Looks really exciting :) How far is your progress until now?
Heheh, any way, hate to say this but the game is on hold until I can get my GCSE's outta the way, so it'll be struck with "rigor mortis" until the day of my last exam, which s sometime in June. :)
Cluey - good luck with your exams! Bummer they have to put this one on hold!
I'm going to lock it to prevent useless posts since it's on hold. When you're back in action let me know and I'll unlock it!
Exams are over, back to work then ;D
New BG up in the Critics Lounge for you to tear apart.
Back to work then...
Looks really cool, but please change the colour of the menu thingy. The 100% blueness is making it very uncomfortable to look at!
It's only a test menu, just to test play the game, I'll probs use a verb coin as it the fashion.
Splash screenage!
You may notice the modified title screen in the background:P
Woah, that titles screen is really shocking and impressing :o
Cluey,
It great you update game's graphics, You might want editing your original post so that scrennshots show up.
Most people would likely refer to original anyways.
This looks really good! I love your simplistic graphics style and I like the font extremely a lot :) Goodluck.
Thanks, and I've also updated the first page.
Imageshack !! just sign up and youll never loose a picture again!
Bonus of uploading zips too! FOR FREE!
oh, this looks awesome! first time i see it. and i can't wait to play it.
Aaaaw feck.
This update is not a happy one.
My brother recently bought a new motherboard and processor for the computer. To get it to work he had to format the PC.
Meaning now I have to start again :(.
At least I know what I want everything to look like and such. But the game is going to look very different to what it does now. :-[
And so the remaking begins:
I've gone down the 3D route as it means:
-I dont have to worry about perspective lines and all that (not that I used em much anyway)
-I dont have to find REAL Draw and get into it again.
-I can make nice pictures with lovely features such as displacement maps etc (you may notice one on the key board)
(You may notice that the screen on the laptop is a screenshot of IE looking at a screen of 7 Days A Skeptic)
Nice, very nice.
At the moment I'm busy with tunes for Bob Goes Home Deluxe, but when you've made progress I'd like to compose some dark jazzy tunes (ala Grim Fandango, Peter McConnell is a genius!) for your game.
Really sorry to hear about that you lost everything in the computer format.
If it's any encouragement, the new screenie looks promising. And don't be afraid to try out new ideas. Keep it going man!
Thanks for your comments, and I'd love that music offer. I'll probs get a playable few levels done and send them to anyone wishing to do the music. To gauge the mood.
The characters may be 3D or 2D cel shaded. I've had nil experience modelling characters in 3D so I may go the traditional route >_<
Just keep at it, and there are benefits from redoing it from scratch. Overcome the initial frustration and just keep bursting foward :D Glad to see you're taking such an optimistic front despite what happened. You're an inspiration to others :=
I'm not too bothered as the majority of The Darksiders time was spent devising the puzzles and story. And those are safely printed off. I actually enjoy doing backgrounds and I enjoy trying out new methods even more.
Looks awsome, will look forward to it :)

Ok, thats not all I've done, I just am proud of the remade helldocks :P
The last one isn't for The Darksiders I just like it alot >_<
I'm gonna work on the (shudder) characters next. Should be, er, fun.
Undead Idalo
Needs some smoothing on the arms but apart from that I'm pretty happy with it.
I'm going to add a gradient to the base so he sorta fades away. As soon as I figure out how:P
