Title: The Legacy of Taft (Webpage info and more!)
Post by: deadsuperhero on Sat 11/12/2004 20:22:57
Okay, this is a really weird game I'm making. It's about William Howard Taft's family is abducted by aliens. The aliens threaten to eat Taft's family for dinner, and Taft says he doesn't care. The aliens are impressed, and send TAft into the future instead of eating him. This game has voices, sprites everything...except right now all I made was a short preview. Here's the link:
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/TaftDemov0.2.zip
Some screenshots:
the picture above is a crappy UFO
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/longroad.PNG)
This picture is just a really long road used in the demo.
Tell me what you think!
NewsFlash: You can also post what you think in the games section. Just search for Taft, and post your idea of it.
UPDATE!!! Added better text box and Alec's voice. New text, and translations

The story is weird, but might work. To be honest, I didn't like what I saw. The screenshots are too blurry, you can only guess what they show. And the demo actually didn't have anything to show, except of that horrible speech (Oh, how I love reading text compared to this). By the way, did you draw the character close-up yourself? It looks very good, but doesn't match the style of your backgriound at all, so I hardly believe this is your work. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, good luck with your game. I hope you will be able to improve your graphics and make up an interesting story.

It really is my work. I suck at drawing backgrounds, so I just used some concepts until I get a bg artist. You didn't think the speech was funny? Okay, Taft's voice is supposed to be stupid on purpose, but it was a pretty funny preview. Don't worry, I'll modify it a bit.

I thought it was funny.  I laughed.

The backgrounds aren't GREAT, but it seems funny enough.  Besides, you got tons of time to work on it.

No need to modify it, if you like it the way it is. This was just my opinion. The demo didn't give me an impression of what the game will be like, so it may work very well in the end. If you make a funny game with good puzzles and story, noone will mind the graphics. And if I don't like the speech, I can just turn it off, so that wouldn't be a problem  ;)
It's strange that you have problems with your backgrounds, because that character really looks good.

well i've seen a lot worse, and speech is hardly ever included so kudos to you for putting it in.

keep it up!

Well, I've been working on it. The text box is better, the narrorator sounds alot better (thanks to Alec Whitechurch) and there are two translations. German...and Blablian (a language that just repeats "Blah blah blah" a whole bunch of times)
I'll post a link to it soon.

Wooh! Go team me!  ;D
Anyway, I'll be happy to do any more voices you need. Looks like a pretty cool game.
Regards,

Alec

Anytime, Alec. You're voice was great for the narrorator. Quite funny.

I looked on google for a pic of Taft in B&W, chose one that I liked, then touched it up in Photoshop using a low opacity brush. I then animated it by drawing his mouth movements BY HAND. After a few hours, it was done, and I was happy with it.

Looking good. You might want to put more details into your backgrounds.

Well, I'm not very good at bgs, but if you want to be an artist for the game, all you have to do is ask.

Who did the german translation? Sorry to say that, but it's horrible. Most of it doesn't make any sense.

Sorry. I tried using a translation service, but obviously it didn't work. Didn't notice that, seeing as I speak very little German.
The Blahblian is better, except for the fact that it changes back to English in the second room. I'm going to work on that. (As well as the actual game)

Dude, I think your game is horrible. The voices suck, the humor sucks, everything sucks.
I think you're a retard, your game is so stupid.

That's not very nice. I can understand if the translation pack is bad, maybe even the backgrounds aren't so great. But the WHOLE GAME??? It looks like someone *COUGH*DemoKRAT*COUGH* didn't read the rules.

DemoKRAT, you need t olearn to respect other people. I liked the game personally. First off: Why do you think it sucks?

Well...I didn't think it was funny, I didn't like the graphics, and I hated the sound. It wasn't even funny with the Mentos song.

Hey, it's Webspider's first actual demo for a game. You should be nicer to him.
Anyway, Webspider is obviously experimenting with his style in the background department. Just relax, and don't worry about it.

Thanks, Gamer. DemoKRAT, you need to relax, I never expected my game to be that appealing, but people like it. Gamer's right, you need to relax.

Well, the puzzles are very creative ones. One involves Taft having to find some clothes because his future apartment catches on fire and burns all his clothes or something. Pretty interesting stuff.

Maybe. You'll just have to wait until the game comes out to find out.

No problem. You shouldn't use translation services for games, you never get good results. When your game is finished, I could help you with your translation.

Ah. Okay then. I ran the German translation back through my translation service, and translated it into English, and you're right, IT'S HORRID! Good thing you spotted it, otherwise I would have used that service for the whole game.

Just downloaded the demo... thought it was rather funny, almost a bit "monty pythonish" type of funny.

Though it's more like an "intro" rather than a demo, I thought the cheesy voice-acting, the stuffy-looking talking portrait, the painted looking artwork, and the odd selection of music in the background made for a strange mix, but I guess overall that's a part of what made it funny.  Once you get some kind of game put together, let us know. I'm sure we'll get a few good laughs from it (which is a good thing, as I assume you're making a humorus type of game).

Keep experiemnting and learning, and your skills will keep improving. You have to start somewhere, and just the fact you have the dedication to get a project completed is a lot more than some of these nay-sayers can do. If you make a few mistakes along the way, or if it's not "the bestest most awesomest game ever" type of game, don't worry, just have fun with it and learn from it.

Good news, everyone. I've almost finished a short interactive demo involving one puzzle and tthe real story behind Taft getting stuck in a bathtub.
It should be out in the next few weeks.
In other news, Eternia Games now has a webpage: http://www.freewebs.com/eterniagames/
Enjoy!
