Post by: frenchy_117 on Sun 27/07/2003 04:59:44
Yes the day has come and i have the first screenshot of The Road through Life!!!
drum role please...

Sorry but i couldn't upload the pictures here. :'(
Any way there are now a couple screenshots so yay!!!

This is a description of my game.
In this game you will be able to do what you want. You can join a mafia, be a cop, be a newspaper writer, ect.

This game is going to be huge so when it is done i strongly recomend putting it onto a cd. and yes i did say WHEN the game is done.

If you want a much more detailed version you should check out the 7 PAGE TTHREAD!!! which used to have the name ?????? but now has The Road through Life.

Now snake what i was thinking that i was going for a side veiw game. And that room is just an intro room where the camera flys to the TV and it turns on and the game menu shows up. Then you get sucked in after you choose which mode or 'passwords' you want to put in. I know that sounds pretty hard but i intend to get some help from the best section of all!!! Begginers sumtin sumtin....

Frenchy, please edit the first post and put an explaination of the game at the top of it so newer people will know what this game is going to be about.

The art looks good. I gotta question though. Are you sure you want to have such a dynamic camera view for that BG? Are you going to create different views for your characters for such an angle? I suggest making your BG's from a side view, just like you've made your characters. Putting the characters onto that BG the way they are right now would look all funky...

NOTORIOUS: What is your avatar from? (PM me)

Thats because we're waiting for more than a few backgrounds and characters, we want to see progress.

Frenchy, don't do it again. Only post if you've got an update or you are answering questions. How are you going to progress with this game if you're constantly looking to see if someone's posted in your thread or not. Who gives a flying rat's ass? Yes, it is always great to get motivation from your fans, but you're just plain obsessed. WORK ON YOUR GAME.

If this thread turns into the last, I'm locking it until you PM me with an actuall update and I'll update it for you, and if you decide to make a new thread just because it is locked, it'll automatically be deleted.
So smarten up. This forum isn't your preschool playground.

So, ah, why the hell did you post in this thread and bring it back to the top? You should have had me delete it :P

If you want my personal opinion about this game (like I've already given you last year)..then here it is: It's WAY TOO BROAD! You'll never get it done, man. You'll spend forever trying to get every possible branch and different possibility complete. Being  a drug dealer or a police officer or a news writer are totally different games in themselves. Do you realize how many global ints you're gonna use and how hard it's going to be to keep track of them all in each seperate scenario? You'll need an unlimited amount of EVERYTHING that AGS offers. So what's the point of being a news writer if you choose that? What's the goal as a police officer? What exactly happens when you're in the mafia? Is this for real?? Each of these options could be a full game on their own. You can't and won't fit them all into ONE game. Do you see what I'm saying?

I'm sorry to unload on you, but like I told you last year, this game is way too broad and will never see the light of day.

[lame_joke]Or maybe I'm just depressed about my own game and need to make fun of somebody else to make myself feel better...[/lame_joke]

You've got some good ideas and a great eye for art. I'd like to see a normal game from you - a game with an actual plot instead of doing whatever you want without a point  ::) Where's the motivation to play?? Why should I want to play a game with no set objective what so ever?

Though it would still be interesting to follow a similiar idea, just with a set plot and character development. You could give it a more limited customizability, with instead, say, letting the person decide how the character acts and how those around him respond. Even if you just use a lot of conversation trees, and keep it as simple as being 'good' or 'evil.' Multiple puzzle solutions would even work: you could solve a puzzle in a heroic way, or in a darker, evil way. It'd be much like Quest for Glory, to be honest -- that's attainable. But something like Baldur's Gate, or Grand Theft Auto? It'd take a lot of time and quite a large team, and a cut-off point for how broad the game is. Good aspiration, but I'm with Snake. Not very possible.

This is something I have had that has been going through my own head of how to do it. But I always told myself the same thing. To get the best of something, use everything. This was a game that was my way of testing the program. I know that there isn't an unlimited amount of everything but I did figure out that if I used everything more than once then it was completely possible.

The whole idea is that no map is there just to take up space. There may be an alley in the game but it is used in a cop mission/mafia mission/ whatever. If you were to be the cop you would go in there to try and stop the bad guys. But if you were in the mafia you would be in the same map trying to make it do the right thing.

Dont worry about unloading your anger on me, I am pretty much the anger punching bag.

Thats how I made the demo for this game. Its graphics sucked ass (And I dont even know where it went) But it still brings a whole new look to the AGS program. I didn't want to be like everyone else, I want to be different and be known for that.

I guess I brought it up cuase I want to restart this thing over. (And I guess I wont use paint for the graphics either.)

Well... if you think you can handle it, go for it. Though that's a lot of work -- there's an afterlifeful of writing to do, barrels of scripting, not to mention the fact that you're doing it all in 3D. Possible? In theory. Your aspiration is admirable. Just know that it's never as easy as it first looks.

I have looked at it more that once. A lot more than once so I know how hard it is going to be. Now if I could find that program with the 3D engine that I love oh so much I will be in business. But paint is looking better and better every second...

Bah! I have crashed and burned for it. So now I have to ask this simple question. Would it be okay if the game had paint (Crappy) graphics or those 3d ones I had innitinally tried to do.

Paint graphics are ok. I actually don't like the look of 3D games in AGS. The project sounds kind of big... Good luck.

Thank god. Cuase the programs that I need and want dont comply with the ones that I have. The twists of turns in the road through life... (Pun not intended. I do say that)

If you are saying that Paint graphics in a whole are crappy, you are wrong. Maybe games made with AGS have grtaphics made with only paint and the graphics rock. I love paint graphics personally, good or ..."crappy".
I say go with paint graphics. In AGS I'd rather see paint graphics than 3D.
Look, go ahead and do what you want with this game idea. Hopefully you complete it. It should be a shit load of fun if you do ;) It's just the whole promo seems a little far fetched...especially last year when you first started using AGS. You had just downloaded it but yet you were making this humungous game with a do anything plot.

I'm going to end this conversation with this:
Graphics don't make the game. The crappiest looking game could be one of the most enjoyable games you've played. In my eyes, it's everything in a whole. What draws me into a game and keeps me interested mostly, is the story.

Definitely go with 2D rather than 3D. 2D is a lot cleaner and more efficient. I agree with Snake that graphics never make the game. Monkey Island 2 had much more colorful and detailed graphics than the first game, but in my opinion, the writing, storyline, and puzzles in the first were all much better than in the second. If you spend all of your time working on nothing but graphics and shaping the game after what you can do graphically, you'll have nothing but a mess of pictures that may be pretty, but that nobody will ever see when they get frustrated with the sub-par writing and blotchy storyline. (And I don't say you as in you, Frenchy, but you as in you, general.) Put an equal amount of your talent into everything do what fits the game best. If I had it my way, all three Gabriel Knight games would have used VGA, because I felt that the graphics from the first game were far superior and fit the series better than 3D or live action. But yes, good luck. If you finish it, you'll have quite a hit on your hands.

I have two days of school left. After five tests (In two days) I will be free and be able to make this game. So dont expect anything for a while.

This is me signing off.
