Title: "The Search" by Dima Software
Post by: AJA on Fri 28/02/2003 19:44:12
Okay, I've finally made this new thread for my AGS project, which has finally got a name! :)

The plot

The bank has been robbed. While the robbers were trying to escape they accidently kidnapped a computer genious, Bill Hills. So, they have to change their plan a bit. You're a not-so-smart detective, who is sent to investigate the robbery and so the adventure begins...

Screenshots

Okay, here are some screenshots from the second demo, which is not yet released, but soon.

Sorry to tell you, but the demo will be late because I haven't continued working on this project for months...  :-[

But, I promise the demo will be out before the end of april/may. I just have this one thing at scholl which takes a lot of my time (okay, that's a lie: I haven't started working on that either :P)... well, anyway...

LOL! This looks great, AJA. The main  character sprite cracks me up, he looks really clueless. Excellent, can't wait to play this game.  :)

I guess that Pete's quickshop should have some perspective too...

Thanks! :)

Eero: Yeah, the whole building looks like a piece of paper, but I have no idea how to make it look more 3d. And because of the view, the roof can't be seen.

Most probably I'll go through the backgrounds once again (3rd time) and add something nice to 'em.

Looks great! I liked the animation of the woman in the bank... who is working with the computer. Nice stuff.

Maybe something like this would help:

I know it doesn't look so good, but it's just an example...

AJA: It's funny, your sprites looks really really nice, like the "hero", but some of those bgs seems to be... hmm... peed while running (Juosten kustuja?) (Finnish mumbojambo)  ;D  ;D

Yeah, do that. You're getting a bit off-topic here...

Okay, I made a remake of the screenshot outside the bank. This won't be in the game because it's made in a different style, but if you like it I'll change it to the background style of The Search and use it instead of the current outside bank bg. Or maybe if I start enjoying making these remakes in this non-antialiased style then perhaps I'll totally change the background style of The Search.

The perspective is a bit wacky with the road going to right behind the bank, but I guess it's not so bad mistake..

Comments, please! Better than the current one? Note that I didn't make any shadows I just wanted to sketch out the scene. Thanks in advance!

-EDIT-

I've also been thinking about the outside pete's quickshop scene. So, I made a 3D model of the whole block and tried different angles and then I decided this looks quite nice, but I still want your opinion about it:

And here's the basic sketch made from the 3D image:

Something about the doors and sign of the bank look unreal... kinda washed-out. Maybe that's what you mean by a different style, though!
Title: Re:The Search by Dima Software
Post by: AJA on Wed 09/04/2003 16:32:05
No, the bank remake is quite like the ouside pete's remake, except that I made the doors and the sign, but these weren't the main things that I was thinking of when drawing the background. Actually I mostly want comments about the new "camera angle". :)

I think that new background is better. One tip: door looks flat now, so instead of just drawing it to the wall, make it a bit "inside" (??) the wall.

Post by: MadReizka on Wed 09/04/2003 20:24:31
There is allways one problem with the that "bird" perspective you are using at the bg 2. The character looks weird because the spirites are made to in a flat surface (try to get the point in the message. Don't know the propper words and all that)
Title: Re:The Search by Dima Software
Post by: Gonzo on Thu 10/04/2003 12:53:14
And the main door to a big bank would probably have a door frame around it. I think it'd look more natural if you had a frame a few pixels wide around it.

Also, the 'bank' sign is just kind of painted on to the wall, which looks a bit unusual. Usually signs for buildings are on wooden or metal boards, or done in 3D lettering stuck to the wall above the door (that would work well, shadowed against the side of the building).

To the point that you want feedback on though: this camera angle works a lot better, I like it.

Just popped into my head: Have you made any improvements to that car-driving-off scene? Or was it fine the way it was?
Title: Re:The Search by Dima Software

The one I showed you? Nope... not yet... haven't got the time... Busy with the preproduction of our movie.

And have I remembered to update the website? With this I only mean the new bank background...

And I've also decided to use the current background for the Pete's quickshop (not the new sketch). But I've started adding more details to all of my backgrounds (just sketching). And I'm probably going to post them into the critics lounge to get some comments.

And I'm sorry to tell you, but nothing has happened in the scripting part of the game, so the demo won't be out so soon, but I'm still somehow trying to get it released before we start shooting our movie in July.

That's all folks!

You wanna know why I haven't worked on this project for a long while? I couldn't think of a name for the main character so I wasn't able to make any dialogues and so on... I got also bored of making walking animations. For the demo, I'll still need the fat robber's walking animation. Oh, and I'll also have to do some serious remakes of the backgrounds.

So, why did I tell you this? Because I'd like YOU to think for me. :P
So, any good main character name suggestions? It must be something that you can easilly remember. Maybe then, when I know the final name of the main character, I'll be able to make myself draw that walking animation and all the necessary background remakes.

Thanks!
