police brutality

My first attempt at comedy. It's supposed to make fun of stereotyping in society, but in the end it's just a bunch of insensitive jokes and every day prejudices put together in a very retarded way just to make you laugh. Contains music by Anal Cunt (Am I allowed to say that here or do I have to put ** on it?)

All rooms (6) and graphics made, just need to get it scripted.

Some screenshots. The story is too simple and dumb to deserve being explained, a "Southern Baptist Convention" member is bored and takes a walk downtown.

Domino

I would not call this comedy. In today's PC world, most people are going to find this very offensive.

Finish the game if you must, but i think people may avoid this just by the title alone.

Cluey

This will go down well...

Here's a tip, if you're going to satirise the use of stereotypes then do it well, if you're going to just spam stereotypes for "lulz" then don't bother. It's nothing new and makes people get worked up. Which could be your intention...

My webcomic.

Although "fucking dyke" and "some nigga" is too much, I like the idea of subjective descriptions instead of objective ones.
Reach for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

Kneel. Now.

Never throw chicken at a Leprechaun.

Jon

I'm slightly confused at this, do you just walk downtown?

Comedy is subjective, and although we can't determine the comedic value from only two screenshots, I'm not detecting much comedic potential in a game where you play a racist bigot. Regardless of irony.

Irony is also subjective, so it's possible that very few people will "get" the joke.

You may achieve some sort of shock value with this, although it will be the most tawdry kind.

Judging by past posts, these kind of subjects seem to fascinate you, PB, and you seem determined to work them into a game.

Far be it for me to judge, though, and you are artistically free to express yourself however you choose.

Having said that, unless you have solid reasons, or a moral/political message, beyond "Racist bigotry is Funny", for presenting views such as those you character has, I'd reconsider letting yourself in for a lot of flak.

As has been pointed out, similar work has been done before. It caused a slight stir, a lot of condemnation, deserved or otherwise, for it's author, and was quickly forgotten.

As time passes, it may not be something you want your name attached to.

I don't think I could've said it better myself.

If a shock factor is intended it won't work on on me because I'm not shocked by racism.
I'd be willing to give this game a go.  However, if the racial slurs are the only joke, then I won't enjoy it.  Is the KKK guy the hero of the game?  If so, it won't be my cup of tea...

If, however, you make a genuine attempt to make the guy a complete loser who gets his come-uppance and all the ethnic characters come out on top... then you may succeed in making a decent anti-racism statement.  But this has to be done with care.

Regardless, I'll play it, as I have nothing to do at the moment.

Ad hominem personal attacks are usually not considered to be very funny and have only a very narrow appeal, if any at all.

It's supposed to make fun of stereotyping in society, ...

It's a difficult subject and anyone taking it on is, with all due respect, either courageous or foolhardy or perhaps a bit of both.  However you admit in the same sentence that this is just an excuse for a presentation of ...

... a bunch of insensitive jokes and every day prejudices put together in a very retarded way just to make you laugh.

Unfortunately, I don't think you will make many people laugh with this kind of approach.  To do that you will need to put more thought in to your project and use your own humor instead of depending upon lame cliches.   I encourage you not to abandon the subject but rather take a more thoughtful approach.

For example, suppose the main character was a space alien who just crashed landed on earth and has no idea about blacks, lesbians, the KKK,  southern baptists, or other political stuff.   The poor guy's space suit just happens to look like a KKK outfit (thinking conehead type character).  He tries to be an inconspicuous  member of society but can't figure out why he is having trouble fitting in.  Can't get a date, rent apartment, get a job, or even donate sperm.    This makes for endless opportunities to poke fun at all kinds of things without inflaming the masses.   Feel free to use this idea or invent another of your own.  Best of luck with this.

RickJ, that is brilliant! Great twist!

mwahahaha

RickJ's idea is awesome, but without it I have the feeling that this game would be WAY to offensive and crude for societies liking.  Either be more subtle than what appears in those pictures or do add something like RickJ's idea and then the game would work as a comedy.

The KKK are hardly a laughing matter.

I don't think the author has realised that his making fun of something that is serious and a great number of people will be pissed off with his effort. I mean FSI is making kind of racist jokes in his games but they;re done in a  very decent and appropriate way. At least mostly.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

vertigoaddict

The thing about racist jokes is that it only works if you're making the jokes about your own race; therefore laughing it off.

fovmester

From the screens this game seems very childish. Apart from the KKK hero and the racism, the "sperm bank" just oozes teenage (read < 13 years) humor. It is highly unlikely that someone like that could manage to joke about a serious subject like the KKK in a manner that won't just upset a lot of people. My advise to you, "police brutality", is to either go about this with great care and insight, or if you can't do that then instead make a game about a teddy bear and his lost lollipop.

Mould Cheeze

I'm looking forward to this game . Looks very promising :=

ShiverMeSideways

It seems some people think of racism just as being stupid, and thus think they need to treat it lightly and make bad jokes about it. Also, irony isn't just saying the opposite thing, because just saying the opposite thing all the time would become moronic, and therefore, unfunny. While irony is meant to be funny.

I don't know what to make of this game, really, it just seems to me like a really bad one, which aspires at being humorous, satirical, ironic, but fails miserably due to the fact that its creator fails to understand those concepts.

I may very well be mistaken, but this is my current opinion, that's how the game comes across to me.

Darth Mandarb

Okay I let it go on for a few days ... the point has been made.  If you don't like the content of this game, don't play it!  Let's keep the social commentary out of this production thread!

Sinclair

I'd happily play a game that is full of racial stereotypes, crude humour, satire, and is needlessly offensive... if it was good. This game quite frankly doesn't look like it will be the slightest bit fun to play or funny. I'll give it a miss.

Darth Mandarb

Okay ... I've weened this thread a bit.

Given the lack of replies from the author (and his last-active status) I'm going to lock this before it gets more out of control in here.

police brutality - if you're still out there making this game and ever want to update it let me know via PM (with a link to the thread) and I will unlock it.
