Title: The Trinity(working title)
Post by: Maverick on Tue 06/03/2007 21:10:57
The Trinity

I have been playing adventure games for the past 25 years and it has been my ambition to one day create a game of my own and I never even knew where to start until I found the AGS game engine by chance. I'm a total puzzle freak so expect plenty of that by the time I'm done which would hopefully be before the end of 2007 since I've been working on this for more than 6 months already.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alex, a banker in his early thirties gets a message on his answering machine that his father (a retired railway worker) has made a great discovery about the lost treasure of the Templars. As a direct descendant of the last of the Grand Masters Alex's father has been obsessed with the lost Templar treasure and spend a lifetime chasing ghosts across the globe in pursuit thereof. When Alex arrives at his father country home later that day the place is abandoned and there is a pool of blood in the garage and his dad's car is gone. Suspecting that his father has been hi-jacked he immediately calls the tracking company to find that the vehicle is moving at almost 700km per hour and is just about to go out of range of the tracking network. This is where our quest begins. Retracing his father's steps Alex takes of on an adventure that will take him to some of the most mystical places from the ancient world to the hustle and bustle of modern day London.

Nice backgrounds, but the main character needs a bit of work.... ;)

Perhaps if you imported him at 320x200 he would look bigger (i.e. more to the scale of the backgrounds)?  But if he's just a holder graphic I guess it's ok.  I'd love to help with something -especially as the main character shares my name! -but sadly my own project must come first.  Best of luck!

This is an interesting story line.  I can't wait to see how it turns out.  Familiar premise... (http://app3.websitetonight.com/projects/2/2/0/3/220381/uploads/SC.JPG)

Thanks everyone,

QuoteNice backgrounds, but the main character needs a bit of work....
BaRon, the default char is just a holder graphic. I'm no good at drawing characters but needed something to test my code with. I hope that someone will come to my rescue because this requires some rather realistic characters. If not, I may have to change may approach to a first person type game.

Stupot
I assumed that people would jump to the conclusion that this is a copy of either Da Vinci Code or Broken Sword but although it will be based on actual historical events it will not be a "hunt" for the Holy Grail.

Quote
Looks good! Does he visit Rosalyn Chapel?Ã,
That would be too close to Dan Brown's version of Templar history. As an academic I feel obligated to stick to the factsÃ,  ;D.

Just to let you know that I'm still working on the game.

I realized that my backgrounds needed some more work so I'm changing almost all the existing stuff to enhance it a litlle. Here are some more screenshots that includes the actual  player character, Alex. The player character was done by Auriond and I am honoured to have such a talented artist on board.

Updated the progress in my first post.
Also updated the screenshots with changes I made to the old stuff based on feedback from the forum.
Baron
I finally got the main character's size sorted ;D.
Zeblin
I incorporated the graphic in your post somewhere in the game with a special mention of how you came up with this "unique" design  ;).
SteelDrummer is helping me out with the music and I don't think the man needs any introduction. You can find some of his work HERE (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=852/).

At this point I'm pushing hard to get a demo out by June 2007 just too get an idea of how people will respond to my first attempt at doing my own game.

BTW I'm still looking for some help with realistic characters :(

Are you going to make your own mouse interface, different to that of the existing AGS default? Maybe a Broken Sword or Beneath a Steel Sky type one?

I think this always improves a game made with AGS. As I personally believe that a less clunky interface fits many games better.

This game looks cool, the storyline is very interesting. I'd help with characters, but music is more of my forte. :D

markbilly

Thanks!. The whole inteface was done from scratch and runs from the main character's PDA (see screenshot 2) and includes:

mobile phone
Text messages
A journal that updates as you progress
Web browser - to research certain topics needed to solve puzzles
Hint system (thinking about removing this)
All the other save/load and inventory stuff.
Cursor graphics

Basically it's an all in one interface and the idea for the design was born from Gabriel Knight 's Sydney computer system used by Grace in GKIII as well as custom cursors.

Steeldrummer

Thanks JT. I'm honored to have you aboard!!

Hey I just said that because I'm really bored of games which can become great games but then the graphics mess it all.

Maverick, it looks interesting to me.  I think the storyline is more important than the graphics, but I like the screenshots anyway. Good luck with your game.

immortal: You can still vote after the game has been published. You really pushed it this time.

CosmoQueen and Sthomannch

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. This is the kind of inspiration that keeps me going. Demo should be available in July.

inmortal
I think some people have a misconception of what AGS is all about and for the most part the people that make games with this great engine do it for the love of the 2D genre and not because they are developers nor do they claim to be. For me this is about a life long passion for adventure games and the personal growth that comes with it. From all the positive feedback and critique received from members I had to redo several backgrounds because of the progress and the obvious inconsistency in terms of the quality of backgrounds due to the new skills learned from the artists in the community. To me this encompasses everything that CJ is trying to achieve by making this instrument available free of charge.

Sorry about going off topic for a moment but here is a new screenshot to get things back on track

Any relation to the Infocom classic adventure known as "Trinity"?

Radiant,

At the risk of sounding like an idiot I have to confess that I have no idea which game you are referring to. The story just happens to evolve around three ancient cultures (for the moment)  hence the working title.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_%28computer_game%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_%28computer_game%29)

It's a cult classic although I personally don't like it. No big deal, they don't own the word or anything, just thought there might be a link there.

Nice work so far Maverick, looking forward to this!

Can I suggest looking at this http://americangirlscouts.org/bbc.com/yabb/index.php?topic=26501.0

For the walk cycles?

Hope it helps.

Looking good, Mav! But why this screenshot is a higher resolution than the other ones?
Is auriond doing backgrounds as well, or are those by you? Either way they look great, some of them almost have a 3D-like quality to them.

UPDATE:
I've made/am making significant progress with the music, just waiting to get some direction from Maverick as to some questions I had about the music. I can't really estimate how complete the score is, but I'm working on several songs at the moment and the score seems to be coming together nicely.

In the near future (if Maverick says I can do these things):
1. I'll release a sample track from the game
2. (not really something I'll do, but a request) Maverick has only told me to do a few tracks, and these seem more like themes- i.e.: most of them are too intrusive to work as background music. I am far better at doing 'themes' than doing ambient background music. I'm wondering if anyone would like to step up and collaborate with me for some ambient tracks for the game's soundtrack. Maverick, if you don't need this sort of thing, let me know and I'll remove the post.

I'm doing all the backgrounds myself. The problem is that my work is improving (my opinion) all the time which means that I have to redo a lot of the stuff as I go along. For every background I finish I have to go back and polish up the previous ones to make sure they match the quality of my latest work (one step forward and two back kind of thing). By the time I'm done with the 140 backgrounds needed I could probably have done 500.

Music
As I don't have a musical bone in my body I'll leave this in your hands.

Afflict
This is a great module but it doesn't work for detailed high res characters. I've been working on my animation skills to see if I can do these animations myself but I need someone to do the first frames of each character (walk forward, back, left, diagonal). Auriond is way too busy with work and her own project to assist at this point so I'm back to square one as far as the characters are concerned. Maybe if I hint enough Buloght will come and rescue me.

buloght's not just a man. His art skills are almost.... supernatural.. but that's getting off-topic.

I hope to be posting a track from the game's soundtrack before next week.

I'm only doing the character sprites - if it can be said that I'm making any progress at all. I'm not. I am stuck with the walkcycle, because any and all help that I've been able to find from the forums tend to have a cartoonish style to the walkcycle. I'm currently trying to trace over the biomovement website's animation for a more realistic movement to match the style of the sprites, but it's really slow going. Plus I haven't had time recently what with my wedding coming up and work all.

Maverick, I'm really sorry if I'm holding back the progress of The Trinity. If there's anyone who can help with animation, I would be happy to provide keyframes. It's the in-between frames that gets me stumped.
Title: Re: The Trinity(working title)
Post by: Afflict on Sat 25/08/2007 10:44:37
Walk Cycles are really just a couple of frames. I was also intimidated by the first one I ever made, I see however that a more realistic walk cycle is a harder one to do than a cartoonish one cause your going to have to get it really realistic.

I would suggest referencing things like PQ3 / PQ4 to look at the way they did it.

Just send me the keyframes (starting positions) for all the walk cycles and I'll give it a shot. I sent you a PM on this so let me know.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

I'm happy to report that Auriond and I worked something out as far as the sprites are concerned and she has put a lot of work into this the past few days so we just might have a fully animated main character sooner than we think.

I'm all set to put the demo together as soon as that happens. Heck at this rate it should be ready by December  ;D. The only problem I have right now is to find someone to host the demo because the file is huge but I'm working on setting up my own server real soon.

Steel,

I don't know if it is a server problem or whether my ADSL is acting up but I cannot download the music.

Steel,

The music you posted on the thread although I assume that it is the same as the jazz theme you sent me some time ago. That piece is brilliant and I think we should post it anyway.

To everyone else who is having trouble with the link HERE (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/music2.mid) is the masterpiece I'm talking about!

Excellent work Steel! 8)

As I mentioned before my work is improving all the time so I decided to update the existing screenshots in the first post as I finish the "upgraded versions"  :o so check it out every once in a while if you want to keep track of the changes.

First post updated with new versions of backgrounds as well as a progress update.

I'm also very happy to unvail the latest version of our protagonist Alex Moss. A great word of thanks to Auriond for bringing him to life from a rather sketchy animation by yours truly.

Ladies and gentleman without any further ado I give you (drum roll) Alex Moss a thirty something investment banker with a serious attitude in his walk which is only surpassed by his sharp intellect and ability to unravel even the most difficult puzzles.

Steel has also been making some great progress on the music so we are heading in the right direction.

First time seeing this thread, and it looks great!

Steel: Listening to your second theme right now. I can definately see the Chameleon in it. I love that song, and consequently yours. Good show.

I also am a fan of the walk cycle. Even the hair moves. Snazzy.
