Title: Tom Mato's Grand Wing-Ding (DEMO RELEASED) (PLUS: A plea for cameo appearances)
Post by: Bob The Hun on Fri 25/10/2002 03:54:53
T.M.G.W.D. is my first attempt at an AGS game, although it is not my first Tom Mato game.
Although I do not have a website or any screenshots yet, here are some details:

GRAPHICS
Over three seperate contrasting artistic styles! Yeah, I'm not very good with graphics. I'm getting better, though.
I like the tomato's animation though..

MUSIC
I'd like to state this right here. I did not steal music from Yahtzee's latest game (The Trials of Odysseus Kent). The only reason that the two games have quite a bit of the same music is that it turns out that we both stole music from 'RPG Maker'. At least I think it's RPG Maker, because I got the MIDIs from a folder from an RPG Maker game I downloaded.

PLOT
I'm not going to spoil some of the juicy details (not that you care) but I will say that it involves a tomato, the aptly named Tom Mato, getting in a helicopter crash on the way to a business meeting.
Also something about a duck.

STATE OF DEVELOPMENT
I have about 6 rooms so far. I know what I need to do before I can get the demo out though.
What time will I get out the demo?
If I spent most of my free time trying to get it done, I could have it in about a week. However, I only work on the game when I feel like it, so I'll guess about a month before I get the demo done.

EDIT: Get the demo at http://www.freewebs.com/vp8/TOMATO.zip (http://www.freewebs.com/vp8/TOMATO.zip)

Love the title. Will the sequel be P. O. Tato's Incredible Long Schlong?

:p

The game is getting closer to being done. I've got a couple of new rooms done. I'd guess that the demo should be done in less than a month.

m0ds: Hmm... We'll just have to wait and see..

Snake: I'm working on a little website with some screenshots. I should probably have it done in the next week.

Las: Just because my politics are right doesn't mean that you have to persecute me.. :'(

Okay, I'm almost seven months late on those screenshots.
But work on the game has resumed!
Some screenshots can be found right in here (http://www.freewebs.com/vp8).
Those aren't very flattering screenshots, though.
As a side note, I'm making the game with a version of AGS that's over a year old, so don't expect any fancy stuff. I didn't want to go through the trouble of upgrading to the current one, but I'm lazy that way.

SWEEEET! It looks awesome! I can't wait to play this game  8)

Ubgrading to the newest AGS isn't hard at all. All you do is load your game into it like any other game, and it'll detect that it was saved with a previous version and so saves and upgrades the game for you right then and there. Just be sure to have a second copy of your game incase anything funky should happen during the saving process ;)

Thanks Snake.
A Demo is in the near future!
It should be released sometime in June (assuming i don't go off for another seven months).
The Demo will feature:
-Even more Contrasting artistic styles!
-Even more stolen music! (Now stolen from even more sources!)
-16 fully functional rooms! (not counting the rooms that you can't go into, like intros and misc. screens)
-Even less of an understandable plot! (Now there's also something about a nuclear power plant, a Spring-Loaded NerdMobile, and the sacred shrine of Monkey-Thor)
Should be out by June assuming there's no slacking off.

I actually did something on schedule!
Demo released. Download it at:
http://www.freewebs.com/vp8/TOMATO.zip (http://www.freewebs.com/vp8/TOMATO.zip)
(NOTE: You might have to right-click and 'save as')
Features are the the same as in previous post, except that there are now 17 fully functional rooms, and music that I actually asked permission to use (as it was Trapezoid's)
Enjoy, because at this rate, the full version won't be out for a long time.

I've just had a quick play.

Excellent stuff, mate.  ;D

There are some classic quotes in there

Quoteunder a powerful marketing slogan: "buy our sprinkler or we'll shoot your dog!"
;D

Keep it up.

Goos job! I like the walking animation for Tom.

2 things to improve apon I think (if you don't mind ;) )

1. I think you might want to make the background's art style consistant. Either using all MS Paint or scanned drawings :) Personally I like the Paint ones better...reminds me of NES games ;)

2. The dialoges between Tom and the creator are a bit long, Funny, but a bit too long I think...

Thanks for the comments, Snake and Aussie.
And yeah, the art styles are a bit random in some places. The reason is that the first room, as you can see, is a style all it's own. That's because it's the first room I drew for an AGS game, and I was used to drawing for RPGs. Then, realizing that drawing a complete background had much more potential than making a background out of tiles, I switched to Photoshop, and drew the next three backgrounds in that style. That's when I went on that unexpected 7-month break from working on the game. When I came back, I tried out making a background with MS Paint and found it to be much easier and much more appropriate looking.
So, the rest of the game will be made in the same style.
And yeah, I did get a little carried away with the Tom-Creator conversation. Oddly enough though, that is the shortened version. The original dialogue was almost twice as long. Seeing as it was too long, I shortened it and made it a bit clearer what was going on. Looking back on it, it still is a little bit long. I guess the reason is that it was really easy to write the dialog as Tom was supposed to be talking to the creator of the game (in other words, me). That way I really only had to write for 1 character, as the other was me. It's long, but that's what the space bar is for :)
Thanks again for the feedback, everybody.

I got that the first time I tried.  I immediately retried but this time I held down the shift key while clicking on the link.

Okay, an update. I'm working on Act 2 now, during which
Spoiler
Tom gets deleted and has to go through the hard drive of the computer and stuff and try to get back into the program
[close]
Since that technically is a spoiler, I thought I'd hide it.
But anyway, since he's going through the hard-drive, there needs to be other characters on the hard-drive for him to interact with.
So, if any of you have any characters from your games that I could use just for a cameo appearance I would greatly appreciate it (and yes, I would list your name in the credits)
Thanks in advance to anybody.

You can also use Freddie Fish Jr. and Mr. Jello if you want. It is entirely possible in an adventure game for a fish to breathe out of water. PM me if you need the graphics or .cha files.

(note: they are designed for 640 x 400 resolution)
