Hello there, Im (obviously) new here and to AGS, I fiddled around with it a bit and am wanting to make a first-person style point and click styled very much like the NES versions of Deja Vu, Shadowgate, and Uninvited.
What template might work best for that? Ive seen mention that there are custom templates created by the community, so I was curious if anyone knew of a template for this specifically?

Already know how to make the player invisible so it can be "first-person", just looking for advice really. Tumbleweed seems kind of alright but I havent messed with it a lot?

I'd begin with either BASS or even Empty template tbh. Thumbleweed is for Monkey Island / Thimbleweed park kind of games where you have numerous verbs but also walking character, as far as I know it has a lot of script dedicated to character walking and interacting with objects in particular way.

For the game like Shadowgate it's easy to set up your own list of verbs on screen and their use, this way you also won't have any redundant script that could mess with what you do.

I kind of feel like starting with an empty template for someone who hasn't made a game yet and/or has no experience in coding, can be very overwhelming.
I would take either the BASS or the one click template (depending if you want to use 1 or 2 mouse buttons) to start with, and then adapt to your needs. Reason for this, is that a bunch of stuff is already done and it's easier to understand and change this code, than it is to start with a blank canvas, IMHO.
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

I agree. I started with BASS template as a COMPLETE newbie and I think it's a great introduction into Adventure Games Studio and it's inner workings. I think if I started from blank template, I just wouldn't know what to do.

Guess I'm the exception here, because I started off with the blank template right off the bat for my first game (which also happened to be in the first person). I didn't want to rely on pre-made stuff, but rather learn all the basics from scratch and build on that foundation. In that sense, I feel that using the blank template really helped me understand why I was doing whatever I was doing rather than have the template manage most things for me. But ymmv and all that :)

I guess we might benefit from a first-person view template btw. If anyone feels like making one similar to one of those games like "Shadowgate", or knows such template exist, we might add it to the AGS distribution.
