picture colour deep

Something very strange. For drawing pictures I am using gimp (linux / win). I have a common picture (xcf is the standard for gimp). Then i save it as bmp. then I open again the first picture and modify it, and save it as anither bmp. I have 2 files that shoul be practically identical from technical point of view. But when I want to use them a s backgroud for a room and for another supplementary image for animating backgrounds, i receive a message telling me that the background is 16 bit colour and the animating background frame opicture has only 8 bit !!!! How is possible that ???? Practically, the images are the same !!!!!!

Because editing programs have a tendency to mess with your palettes and color depths unless you explicitly state it. But I've never used GIMP, so I most likely can't help you.

I don't think that 2 succesive saves of the same picture with save as can have different results. it is possible to be something like a "bug" in the AGS ????????

Did you perhaps change the color depth of your game? What is the current color depth?

I believe as part of the importing process, AGS converts images to whatever resolution and color depth your game is configured to use.   Perhaps your game is setup for 8-bit co9lor depth, as TrentR suggests, and the initial background image is automatically converted but for some reason or another the conversion is not performed for subsequent backgropund frames.

Btw, I prefer using PNG rather than BMP image format; much smaller file size and gives excellent results.

You may also want to look at Graphics Gale, a free/comercial paint program that gives very good palette and an imation support.   It's a windows program but I believe it runs fine under WINE and for certain in VirtualBox.

Btw, I have good results/experience using AGS on Linux in VirtualBox.   It just needs speed processor (>1GHz) and plenty of RAM (>1GB).
