Title: Character creatin guide?
Post by: krishaw on Sat 23/05/2009 20:08:34
I have a pretty full idea for a game at the moment except for what the characters look like. I know the basic look I'm going for with each character (although only a vague idea).

I thought I'd focus on this last and set up bakcgrounds, music, scripting and fixing any plot holes left first. I do, however, feel that I should get characters out of the way soon though. Any tips on how to make a character? I'm using MS paint* for the whole game (yes I know its crappy and yes I know it's a beginner's way of making graphics) so does anyone have an idea of how to draw up characters and any tips they could hand out? Thanks.

*I have tried using GraphicsGale by the way but it seemed more awkward to use than Paint so I just left it.

Paint is not to be sneezed at- I know at least three forum members who use it to great success!

Start with an outline. A character, especially if it is a cartoony one, will usually be built out of a few simple shapes. Even if you're going for a more realistic look, you can still try out different aspects- broad shoulders, coat, hat. Make a silhouette you like looking at.

Then, create the actual black outline. Fill it with flat colours. Then add shading, and presto, you're ready to enter the Critic's Lounge!

Thanks very much for the feedback and advice. I don't particularly like the "Cartoon" style very much. I don't like realistic characters either though. I'm more into the sprites seen in Monkey island, 5 days a stranger and leisure suit larry. 2D graphics and darker colours.

Thanks again. I'll have a look at those tutorials too.
