When I test my game, the main character won't walk on the walkable areas.  I've made sure that he starts at Room 1, and his coordinates are in the right place.  The walkable area is also a different color than the walkbehinds.  What else could be wrong?

? Walkable areas and walkbehinds are two different and independent things, whether they're drawn with the same colour or not doesn't matter.
I'm not sure what your problem, but what I guessed was that you might have the areas mixed up, and drew "walkable areas" when you're drawing walkbehinds in the editor. You need to choose what kind of areas you're going to draw in the editor.

and don't make any part of your walkable area too narrow.. otherwise I think there's the chance that if your character walks over a too narrow of a walkable area, they may get "stucK' in a non-walkable area.Ã,

Also double check all your settings to make sure your character is indeed stating in a walkable area and that nothing is disabling from walking.

Thanks for your help, but he's still not moving.  I even tried making the whole screen walkable, but he won't go anywhere.  I checked to see if I mixed up the walkbehinds and walkables, but that wasn't the case.

My computer uses Windows XP.  Would that cause any problems?

Did you change anything from the global script?

Barbarian

I use AGS on my XP based computer without problems.
You maybe overlooked something obvious or some setting in place you're not aware of that may be that cause?

Does the Demo AGS game and/or other AGS game run okay on your computer?
If so, then I'd say the problem is probably not with your computer, but probably with something in your settings.

And, if you've not already done so, perhaps go through the beginner's tutorial step-by-step and see if you can make things work as you follow the tutorial, you may also notice you may have missed doing something obvious, or set something incorrectly.

(the on-line beginner's tutorial over here: http://www.agsforums.com/acintro1.htm )

without knowing specifically what you have done, I can only make guesses at what the problem might be.

Good luck,

Hey, I got it to work!  I'm not sure what I did, though.

Thanks for all your help :)

spud

i made this mistake when i started and it turned out i had used hotspot 1 for the walkable area instead of walkable area 1 and as you see they are the same colour

Awesomeness

i made the same mistake when i had "dont automatically move character in walk mode" checked for some reason.

Good points - is this in the BFAQ? If not, could it be a god idea to mention that issue? :)

TerranRich

It is indeed a GOD idea. And I, as God, will add it to the BFAQ. And thanks for referring to it as BFAQ. Now the acronym is catching on! :)

Jesus Christ! That was a really unintentional typo. ;D
