i was just wondering if i could use an earlier version of .NET framework than 2.0 beacause im having a problem getting .NET framework 2.0
AGS 3.0 and higher requires .NET 2.0 or higher. Prior versions of AGS do not require .NET.

i could still make decent games with earlier versions right?
V2.0 is marked as a requirement. So, if you don't have it installed, even if the editor (note: AGS games don't need .NET to work, only the editor needs it) runs, there're chances that it relies on some features of V2.0 which yield problems later.
Are there any real reasons you don't update .NET?
Edited: Beated by Monkey, but yes, you can still make games without .NET if you use V2.72 or earlier.

yes there is reasons i cant my windows validation key is broken and its been so long i lost the package my XP PRO came in.
I can get .NET but i cant get windows installer 3.0.
Some people actually opt not to update for various reasons. I have definitely heard some people say they won't upgrade (at least right now) because of the requirement, but it certainly opened up new worlds of possibility for Chris (AGS creator and developer).
If you ever do manage to obtain the .NET framework I would highly recommend the upgrade to 3.0, but it's certainly possible to create wonderful games with prior versions of AGS.
ok thanks for all your help i now have ags 2.72 i think it is and so far its working great for me. thanks for the help.
