I am trying to create an end cutscene. I am using PlayVideo:
PlayVideo(endcutscene.OGV, eVideoSkipNotAllowed, 10);
I've tried the video in the compiled folder and in the main folder and both times get "undefined symbol" referring to the file name.
What am I doing wrong?
Also, does anyone know of a free program that converts WMV to OGV?
The file name is supposed to be a string constant:
PlayVideo("endcutscene.OGV", eVideoSkipNotAllowed, 10);
Put the video in the main game folder, it gets compiled into the exe.
That was it. Thanks.
Which file format is better to use? AVI or OGV, with a commercial game?
OGG Theora videos (OGV) do not have to be distributed directly with the game, they are compiled into the game EXE. So OGV would definitely be better for commercial projects.
Like Khris said, no need to have the video in the Compiled folder.
Okay.
Anyone know of a free program that converts WMV to OGV?
I use SUPER (http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html) which is pretty versatile. It can definitely convert WMV to OGV, though it will give it a .OGG extension, just change it to .OGV yourself.
I tried that one, based on another post I saw here, and it didn't have the OGG format.

Yes it does. I'm not sure where you were looking for it, but SUPER definitely supports both OGG Theora (video) and OGG Vorbis (audio).
The video version does not write out to OGG. From the website:
Write: HD Video (inc. Blu-ray video, MPEG-2 HD and WMV HD), AVI (DivX, Xvid, etc.), MP4 (inc. Sony PSP, Apple iPod and Archos), WMV, 3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, FLV, F4V, DVD, MPEG-1, 2, 4, MPG, MJPEG, H.263, H.264, MKV, MPEG1 DPG, AMV, MTV, GIF, TS, M2TS.
The audio version will write out to OGG, but it won't read video files.
I also get a "non-activated version" message when it opens up. When I go to register, it is requesting a payment. Either I am doing something really wrong, or they changed it since you downloaded it.
Okay, SUPER from eRightSoft is FREEWARE. So I don't know what program you even downloaded, but it's not the same one I'm talking about. SUPER
does support OGG Theora (in and out). I've used it myself several times.
They want to promote their software, so you have to click through
several a few pages before you can get to the actual download link. I can't just link you straight to the download or I would, and for obvious reasons (such as downloading the wrong program) I wouldn't recommend getting it from an unofficial mirror or download site.
You have to go to their official website and follow this path (USE CTRL+F IF YOU CAN'T FIND THESE
EXACT LINKS):
- GO HERE: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
- CLICK: "Start Downloading SUPER ©" (it's at the bottom of the first page, below the red bar with the number 4 on it)
- CLICK: "download and use" (at the top of the page, in the red paragraph of text, the link is blue)
- CLICK: "Download SUPER © setup file" (at the bottom of the page, with a Google+ "+1" icon next to it, above 3 paragraphs of blue text)
DO NOT CLICK ON ANY OF THE OTHER LINKS OR ADVERTISEMENTS.Yes, it's stupid, but it's a good program, and it's free, so it's worth having to navigate their site.
Oh, and:
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
Quote[From the first page...]
SUPER © Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer.
A GUI to FFmpeg, MEncoder, MPlayer, x264, MusePack, Monkey's audio, Shorten audio, TAK audio, True audio, WavPack, the libavcodec library & the theora/vorbis RealProducer's plugIn.
[...from the third page...]
The SUPERsetup installation file comes with all Windows® compiled versions of FFmpeg, MEncoder, MPlayer, x264, MusePack, Monkey's audio, Shorten audio, TAK audio, True audio, WavPack, and the libavcodec library (compiled inside FFmpeg and MEncoder).
Then if you read up on FFmpeg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FFmpeg), you will find that FFmpeg supports OGG Theora (just in case the listings for "Theora" on SUPER's site went overlooked), and SUPER is, in short, a GUI wrapper for FFmpeg (and other such converters).
Okay, got the right one, installed it and the got the file converted. Cutscene is working great. Thanks for your patience.
