I've spent probably the last year and a half of my life working on an RPG using the RPG Maker 2000(3) program. I'm wanting to branch out and create something more professional, and I like what AGS is capable of.
However, I've noticed its geared toward adventure games. Is it wise to try making an RPG with the program? Are there templates I can download to customize the interface, making it easier to make RPG-Style games? Should I try a different program?
To be specific, I'm speaking of two-dimensional, Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire, Final Fantasy type RPGs -- mainly those developed for the SNES.

Short answer... No
It would be difficult if not impossible... I use both of them...
There really aren't any templates that I can think of what you're looking for, mostly because almost everyone here is making adventures. We'd love for you to stay and make that template for others to use, though.
As long as you're nice ;)
It would be most possible to make an RPG in AGS. Hey, I've made everything from action games to music notation programs in AGS!
You should probably use RPG Maker, though. It sounds like that is more geared to the type of game you want to make. It'd be easier in the long run.
I use Rm2k3, rm2k, sphere and AGS. What I have to say is - stick to the RPG engines. I tried making an RPG with AGS. It's hard and AGS is not suited for battles, and RPG style menus, and equipment.
If you want to do an adventure style RPG it'd work though, if RPG thinsg like stats and battles and buying things are all you need added to the standard adventure characters walking about individually drawn rooms, but a top down tile based game would be a bit difficult.
Use the O.H.R.RPG.C.E (http://www.hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/)!! It has all those things like buying and battles and it looks pretty good.
