Title: Displaying Chinese words in game?
Post by: Wakeman on Thu 28/09/2006 08:12:05
I have downloaded the AGS recently and is learning how to write a game. However, before really getting started, I found out that AGS does not seen to support Chinese words.

Actually, Chinese is my first language, so I was planning to write a game in Chinese first, maybe translate it to English later if it is successful (or if I ever complete it). I already have an idea about a Chinese 'magic' game.

I have checked the FAQ. There are addons for German, Greek, but no Chinese or Japanese atm. Probably not too many Asians here. :(

Can anyone help? Or should I just write the game in English?

It's not directly possible at the moment (unless there's an update or someone makes a plugin), since AGS currently doesn't support displaying character sets using double bytes (more conveniently referred to CJK characters and those Unicode counterparts).
There's no easy way to produce a game in Chinese language, unless you carefully arrange your texts so to (severely) limit the number of different characters used and cramp them into a TTF with no more than 256 entries (there may be other ways possible, but they're not practical).
If you want to use Japanese, though, and can sacrify the Kanji, using just the alphabets, you can do this by using the cramp-in-a-TTF method (like this (http://americangirlscouts.org/bbc.com/yabb/index.php?topic=20792.0), read the last post to find a download of my crappy trial.

Unfortunately, not many people would find this useful at the moment, support for this is of low priority, so it probably won't be implemented in the near future.
