I'm new to this and starting to understand the basics.
I was wondering about a Indiana Jones Fate Of Atlantis temple to get me started or something like that. I don't really like the inventory AGS comes with. I read a little about a temple from that game on here and wondering if it will work on all versions of AGS. Downloaded I think the right template but the .pdf it came with confused me. I don't know much of the scripting. Is there a good template to use that is easy to deal with? I hope I'm not asking about this too early sense I've only made one room and went through the basic tutorials. One last thing I need to ask is what version of AGS should I be using?

Hi

Welcome to AGS..

1, You can make your own inventory items using most paint programs and import them into AGS via the Sprite Manager.

2, You can download Templates from various sources here, but do check that it is compatable with the version of the AGS you have as older templates may not work with laster versions.

Using downloaded templates

If you've downloaded a game template from the internet, you should find a file with a .AGT extension. This is the AGS Template File, and you just need to copy it into the "Templates" folder within the AGS Editor directory.

Everyone has to learn the scripting from scratch, it does get easier but there is help here if you can't find an answer to your question in the manual or need further help.

Above all, keep reading the manual and checking through these Forums using the search facilty to find info.

Being a newbie you would do well to practise with the Default Template that comes with AGS until you are comfortable and have an understanding of how it all works.

The lastest version is 3.1.2

Hope this is helpfull

The most recent versions of AGS come with a LucasArts-9verbsGUI template already included. It is designed for Monkey Island but can easily be changed to the FoA style.

I dare say it's the most current and professional template of this type out there, so look no further than that.

Just open AGS, select "Start a new game", then select the "9-verb MI-style" template.
Wondering how you missed this, btw; make sure you download the newest version of AGS:

PS: A lot of its functionality deviates from the Default Game's; thus it might be better to indeed follow the Tutorial and get to know AGS better first, like barefoot said.

Thanks guys. I didn't know what that was. Got it working.I'm very much a newbie thats for sure. I shouldn't use it sense its more advanced right? Don't want to get to far ahead of myself.
I do have a few more questions. Don't know if I should make a new topic or just write what I need help on here so I'll just write it here.
Wondering how to make the game full screen? You can still make it full screen even if its 320 x240 or whatever right?
I have no clue where to start on making a character sprite. I looked on here but nothing seems to really help me. I need to know what size to make the characters for the resolutions. Thinking of going with 1024 x 768 if thats a good idea?
Tried getting a sprite maker program but can't find one thats good. The whole getting them to walk seems hard.
Should I use MS paint or I have photoshop CS4 but do I really need something that advance. Not making a 256 game but do want somewhat good graphics.

Just got Graphics Gale  http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/download.html for making sprites and found a sprite template to get the movement right:-)

Hi

I suggest you use characters already made for AGS, there are quite a few about.. Just dig a bit deeper.

You can even change them by exporting to a paint program and changing their appearance so to speak... so as to make them a new character.

It can be hard to develop new characters with animations so i suggest you use what is available untill you can make your own. There are many skilled people here that may help you and give advice.

You can choose what resolution you want, thats all part of the set up. I generally stick to 640x480.. but thats me... AGS supports scrolling.. go with whatever suits you.

MS paint has its limitations... paintshop pro and photoshop are good programs to use, even just for the layering options.

Just experiment untill you find a solution that suits you..

Graphics Gale is pretty much the best "freeware" out there for pixeling.

About the right resolution: it's usually recommended for beginners to stick to 320 but I guess it comes down to the graphics style you want to use.
You can play a 320 game @ fullscreen: in AGS, press F7 to make sure all files are built, then navigate to the Compiled folder inside the game's folder. Run winsetup and set the graphics filter to x2 and uncheck "run windowed". Then click "Save".
You can test the game without the debugger by pressing Strg+F5; in the editor's preferences there's an option where you can set whether it's going to be run windowed or not.

The ideal size of a character depends mainly on the resolution. Draw a simple room in a document of the same dimensions, put in a door, then make the character 90% as high as that. Or simply measure screen shots from similar games.
If you're planning to do a high-res game with heavy character scaling, make it as big as necessary; scaled-down looks always way better than scaled-up.

Thanks for the advice guys. Full screen is working great:-) For the sprites. It was hard to make one. I really don't want to use someone elses work though. Almost feels like cheating but I think I will have to do it that way. Thinking of making a game based off a movie. Havnt decided what movie yet though. I'm good to make that and share it as long as I don't sell it right? I would think so but thought I'de ask anyways.

Quite often people do use other peoples work as it were: objects, characters etc etc
but best to get approval by asking the person who made the game first though before you use... or even ask if someone could make you one or two...

If you sell any AGS games there are certain conditions that must be adhered to... read the rules about selling as a commercial game...

Info about this:
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/aclegal.htm

The best way is to make a demo of the game for users to comment on and possibly give advice... If the game gets rave reviews then maybe it may be worth selling... but don't expect miracles, after all, why should they part with money, unless its pretty top notch.. and you are also up against some pretty awesome scripters and gamers here....

Best bet is to download a few games to see what is not only possible but what you may need to learn to do before you can fully venture into deep waters...

Ya I didn't play on selling any games I make. Maybe if I really get into this then maybe after like 10 years I might want to sell a game lol but this just sounds like a fun little hobby. Not taking it to seriously or anything:)  Thanks for the info again:)
