I'm just getting started with AGS. I searched for a solution, but couldn't find it.

All I have done so far is import a background image. I set the walking area to the entire room. I went to File Test game, and a window opens up entirely in black (the background image doesn't show up). And sometimes the window doesn't show up either, and the screen just freezes.

Ctrl Q doesn't exit the game. I have to use Alt - X.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Don't use "Test Game", just save the game, then run the exe in the game's Compiled folder.
Try setting it to windowed in winsetup. And make sure that you have installed the latest DirectX and graphic card drivers.

Thanks KhrisMUC. Still not working. I got the latest DirectX. I'll try to update the drivers.

Hmm, did you start with the empty game template?
I'm not sure what's gonna happen if you try to run a game without any characters.
And did you save the room as room1.crm in the game's dir?

The Empty Game template comes with 1 character (cleverly named CHARACTER ;)) and no rooms. Trying to run either the Empty Game or Default Game template as a game will abort AGS with an error saying:

An internal error has occured. Please note down the following information.
If the problem persists, contact Chris Jones.
(ACI version X.X.X)

Error: Load_room: Unable to load the room file 'room1.crm'
Make sure that you saved the room to the correct folder (it should be
in your game's sub-folder of the AGS directory).
Also check that the player character's starting room is set correctly.

OK

X.X.X is the complete ACI version, i.e., 2.72.920 for the AGS 2.72 Final build.

No output to the screen could suggest a number of things, but most probably driver problems.
