I have read the forums, and I know this topic is brought up all the time, however I still am confused. I have a midi file, i have taken it and putten it in the ags_26_sp1 folder, and I also put the music file in my actual game folder within the ags_26_sp1 folder and named them music01.mid, than I went to room 1, checked off play on room load and in the music box I put in the number 1. Can someone help me out?

ElectricMonk

Don't name the file "music01.mid" but "music1.mid", or the program won't find it.

Also, you don't need to put it in the AGS folder, just in the folder where your game is located (not the COMPILED folder, but the one where your "ac2game.ags" is).

Let me know if this helps...

I just did that, and its still not working. I put the song in the actual game folder with the ac2game.ags file in it, labeled it music1.mid , went into room 1, checked play on room load ....no music. whats goin on?

Try setting your "music volume" in the room to "loudest" and see if that changes anything. Also make sure that in your Windows sound settings, the MIDI volume isn't disabled or anything. Does the file play with your normal Windows Media Player?

EDIT:
Selecting Game -> Rebuild VOX Files in the main menu might also help.

tcaparzokid

It plays in winamp, is that a problem?

ElectricMonk

No, not at all (I use WinAmp rather than Media Player too). The important thing is that it plays, so your settings outside of AGS are working.

On the other hand, this makes it all the stranger that it's not playing inside  AGS. Did you try other MIDIs or MP3s to see if they work? And are you sure you set the "play music on room load" to "1" and not "01"?

tcaparzokid

Yes its set to 1. How can I tell if it is  a midi file, the site i dloaded it off of said it was a midi song, however im not sure. How can I tell what the file is?Oh andI read somewhere that sometimes it recognizes the songs as .mid.mid or something? What is that about?

Actually, that might be the reason. If you're not sure your file IS a midi file, chances are your explorer (the file explorer, not the internet explorer... my girlfriend keeps opening IE when i tell her to open the explorer...) doesn't display the file as "filename.mid" but simply as "filename" when you download it.

Stupidly, Windows is set to not display file extensions (such as .doc, .bmp, .mp3 etc) when the file is associated with a program (e.g. WinWord, Paint, WinAmp for the previous extensions).
When you rename your file to "filename.mid", Windows will still hide the final .mid, the file will really be called "filename.mid.mid" (although not displayed as such) and of course AGS won't find it (at least not yet, I read somewhere in the forum that a future version might be taking this into account).

For the time being, open the Windows Explorer, click on View -> Options -> View and uncheck  "Hide file extensions for known file types". If your music file now shows up as "music1.mid.mid" you know that you've very likely found the problem.

EDIT
You can also bring it up by pressing the "Windows" key (the one between CTRL and ALT) and "E" at the same time.

I have to ask a stupid question...how do I get to windows explorer. I went to search and put in Windows Explorer...but when i went to views it didnt say options anywhere, so im assuming that wasnt windows explorer.

(I'm translating from my German Windows 98 here, but it should look similar)...

Click on the "Start" button on the bottom left. Select "Program Files" and somewhere down the list you should find something called "Windows Explorer".

Alternatively, it's the thing that opens up when you click on "My Computer", which should be located at the top left of your Desktop.

Heavens, man, it's how you navigate around your files! ;)
(Or maybe it was just one of those "too obvious" things...)

EDIT
Alternatively, you can bring it up by pressing the "Windows" key (normally located on the bottom left of your keyboard between CTRL and ALT) and the "E" key at the same time.

Hello.Ã,  I am having the same problem, but with a wav file.Ã,  I can play the music in Windows Media Player, but it won't play in my game.Ã,  Other sounds are working, that's why this is so puzzling to me.Ã,  The file extension is hidden, but I wouldn't think that would cause my problem as the song is just called Music4.Ã,  Midi files work fine, as do wavs I'm using as sound effects, but I can't get this particular wav to work.Ã,  If I try using a midi instead of this wav it works fine.Ã,  If there is any more information I can supply that would help with this problem, please let me know.Ã,  Thanks!

(Oh, and I forgot to mention I have rebuilt the VOX files and the file is in my main directory.  I just reread the BFAQ and maybe my problem has to do with the last statement, "Finally, make sure that if you are using WAV files, that they are all in uncompressed PCM format only."  How do I know the format of my wav file?)

AGS Beginners FAQ
Particulary 6.
AGS only supports uncompressed wave files, maybe this wav is compressed with ADPCM or something.

Edit:

I just read your edit.
Try right-clicking in WMP and choose "Properties..." or "Filters" or something (I run Linux, therefore I can't check).

Davimee

Wow, thanks for the quick reply!

In WMP I clicked File, then Properties.  The only information it gave me on the file was
Length:  00:19
Media Type: Audio
Audio Codec:  WMPlug

Aspect Ratio and BitRate are both empty, although if I let the mouse hover over the file in it's folder it says BitRate 128kps, Size 309kb.  Does any of that tell you if the wav is compressed?  Oh, and I just tried right clicking in the folder where I have the file, and it says the audio format is PCM.  Does that mean it's compressed?

strazer

Hm, I don't know what "WMPlug" is.

You could open the file with Audacity and export it again (File -> Export As Wav...) to make sure it's uncompressed (by default Audacity's Wav export format is uncompressed).

Davimee

Ok, great!  Thanks for the help!  If I get the problem fixed I'll write back and let you know.

Davimee

I never did get the wav to work, but I used an MP3 of the same sound instead, and that works just fine.  Thanks for your help!
