Hello everyone, I'm quite new to this website.

I was wondering if the Help Guide in AGS Editor has an error or not. When I click on one of the help topics, it comes up with message 404 - this means the guide is connected to the internet, obviously.

Sorry if this is a stupid thread, I do not want it to be useless spam in any way. But, being a newby, I might have made a mistake in even posting this, the rules seem straight forward enough however...

Anyway, I'm going off-topic, so I'll stop here.

Thanks in advance.

Gilbert

Hmmm, did you mean the "Help/Manual" accessible by pressing F1 or choosing "Help --> Help" from the editor menu?

What it does is to display the AGS manual file, which was conveniently named as ags-help.chm.
Check if that file is in your AGS's folder (if not, you might be using a beta version which didn't contain all the necessary files in the ZIP file, or the content of the AGS ZIP package wasn't decompressed correctly), try doubling click that file and see if you can open it up directly, if not, it's possibly some problem with your system software, which might be fixed if you try updating your windows' files (most of the time IE).

Bethrezen

Yes, that file is in the AGS folder, and when I press F1 as well as help>help contents, it simply comes up with the same thing.

Here's the message I get when I try to open a help topic (Does this look any familiar to you?):

Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. The page might be temporarily unavailable.

Please try the following:

Click the  Refresh button, or try again later.

If you have visited this page previously and you want to view what has been stored on your computer, click File, and then click Work Offline.

For information about offline browsing with Internet Explorer, click the Help menu, and then click Contents and Index.

Thanks in advance......

Did you try double click the chm file itself to open it, as suggested ? Though it's quite possible to yield the same result.

Which version of windows and IE are you using?

You may also read this, which should be the same problem as yours, and seems to be fixed.

Bethrezen

Yes, I double clicked on the file, yet experienced the same result  >:(

I am just going to assume there is a problem with my computer, making the help guide impossible to view. That isn't too good, because if I don't even know how to make a game in AGS editor, I may as well give up entirely, uninstall the program, and forget this website altogether...Just kidding, I know I jump to conclusions. However, I have one last question to ask you...

What would be the result of a reply to a post that asked: Would it be possible to get a full copy of, oh, let's say...the tutorial in the help section of AGS editor? Mine doesn't work.

Thanks again!

Gilbert

Did you check the thread link I posted earlier?

I think some people made offline downloadable html, pdf and word, etc. versions of the manual, I was just too lazy to dig them up, and they're not all up-to-date, for example html version of V2.7 manual can be downloaded from the resource page.

There is also an online up-to-date version of the manual here, though I think you may prefer offline versions more.

As was previously stated the manual is in th windows standard html-help format (i.e chm) and the viewer is supplied as part of windows.  There are perhaps two possibilities:

  • Corrupted Help File - Some how the chm file you have is corrupted and the help viewer can't open it.  You could try downloading it again to see if that works.

  • Bad Help Viewer - There may be something wrong with y our help viewer.  Try to open any other chm files on your computer.  Just search for "*.chm".  You can get the MS HTML Help Workshop here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=14188

I'm new and having the same issue. It comes up as if internet explorer is unable to connect to the help window. My computer is pretty new and I have antivirus software on it.. and I have only ever used it for work purposes until I downloaded this program, so I don't think it's a problem with a virus or anything.

Is there a specific server for the help information? I'm wondering if that server might be down. This problem occurs when I am using AGS and hit F1. The window to the left that usually supplies information regarding the specific topic clicked on comes up with, as was previously stated, the 'Action Canceled' 404 screen.

Sorry, I meant window to the right, not left.Ã,  ::)

ETA: Sorry again for posting twice, I am used to seeing "edit" and not "modify" so I thought I couldn't change my previous post. ::)

Gilbert

But had you read this which I posted earlier, it's probably exaatly your problem.
And no, the manual is offline, no need to connect to any server.

Bethrezen

I thank you all very much for solving this problem of mine.

Are you using Windows XP?

If you double-click the ags-help.chm file, does it bring up a dialog box with a security warning and asking if you're sure you want to go ahead?

If so, check the "don't ask me again" tick box (or whatever it's called) and that seems to solve the problem.

It seems that WinXP tries to be clever by remembering files downloaded from the internet, and applies extra security to stop them opening without your extra permission.
