Title: Need Help: Downloaded Insta-Game, but I can't seem to import the PCX files
Post by: Zachski on Fri 10/10/2008 23:42:24
I need help with this.

I downloaded the Insta-game from the Resources... but the majority of the sprites are in PCX, and AGS 3.0 doesn't seem to recognize it as a legitimate importing file (or at least from what I'm trying to do). (EDIT: It is specifically 3.0.2.44)

I mostly want to use the Insta-game sprites to get myself started on learning the AGS editor, before I go about making my own sprites and stuff.  So, any advice or alternative resources?

Thanks in advance.

PCX is no longer supported by AGS (I think that it stopped with 3.0?). So the easiest way would be to open the PCX files in any image editor, and save them as BMP...

Alternatively, if all you want to do is trying out AGS, just create a few cheap graphics with Paint, and use those. There really isn't that much you'd need- a stick man and a simple room, heh, that should do the trick.

Or, here... I think the Maniac Mansion Starter Pack has bitmaps. It's from a German project, but you should at least be able to use the graphics.

Actually, I ended up doing something similar, except in Photoshop.

I tried to make a stickman animation, but discovered something-- Stickmen are harder for me to animate O_o

So, I made a little... I guess "marshmallow man" named Blank.  He has a VERY simplified walking animation and talking animation, but it's at least not-painful-on-the-eyes.

I do plan on making an actual game out of this, by the way, and submitting it.  I just need to work out some kinks and stuff... like, all there is is a single room that he can walk around now, and some fun stuff he can say when you click the various icons on him.

Anyways, thank you for your information and tips!  They are helpful :-)

Photoshop, Paint, as long as it can save them pixels  ;) Any paint program with layers (like Photoshop, of course) will help you no ends with animation, and the Critic Lounge has some tutorials too.

Best of luck with your game, then, and before I forget it, a happy welcome to the forums!

Don't convert them to BMP but PNG. It's the format of choice, for everything.
Photoshop has a batch conversion feature, so you can convert all images in a folder automatically.
