Slasher

Hi,

I copied game files (from win XP) to my win7 computer. Installed 3.2.1 which is what i made it with.

I eventually got all the objects to show their sprites but after compiling the game will not run and just shows black window.

It was made with directdraw in mind. It is 800 x 600 16 color.

Any ideas to get the game back up and running as before?

cheers

Just as Ben304 wrote in your thread yesterday ;)

First make sure you have DirectX 9.0c installed (the last library that supported DirectDraw). If you have DX11, for example, it won't be enough, because it does not fully complement DX9.

There were also some threads about this on forums with other specific solutions, like this:

BTW, as far as I know, Wadjet Eye stopped supporting DirectDraw mode for their commerical games.

Have you tried installing it?

EDIT: I also found some utility that supposedly should help you to install missing DX9 components on Win7 if they are not present:

Did not try that myself, just some people say it does.

Dx11 already installed and will not install dx 9.

it seem dx11 comes with win7 and can't be deleted.

No, you do not need to uninstall DX11.
Please try the link I gave in the previous post above. It is supposed to install only missing components.

If that does not work, try different solutions from the links

(like switching your display mode to 16-bit).

(Ninja'd but I'll just post anyway.)
Why would you want to delete DX11?

Did you mean you tried updating DX9 but the installer refused so because you had DX11, or did you really tried running the installer?

As far as I know DX11 and DX9 are completely different things, and DX11 is not a substitute or upgrade of DX9. That is, programmes that need DX9 will need DX9 installed. So, DX9 and DX11 will co-exist in the same system. For some reasons when M$ released Vista, it was bundled with both DX10 and DX9, but that DX9 included was heavily outdated(or so I has heard), so one needs to update DX9 manually for newer drivers and missing components in order to run some DX9 programmes. This stupid tradition had somehow been followed by Win7.

Hi Crimson,

changing windows from 32 to 16 seems to work and the game runs, though i have not fully tested it yet.

Thumbs up Crimson

Cheers for your help (nod)

Hopefully I can get back to work on the game.

EDIT: It only seems to run in preview mode.. Why does it not work in fill screen?

Come back WinXP...

It seems win7 did not recognize on-board graphics display adapter (showed standard vga adapter) but I managed to find out what the display adapter was (SiS Mirage 3), download drivers, installed them and now full screen display perfect...

Problem solved (nod)
