How and what do I use to make a character for AGS editor?

How and what do I use to make a character  for AGS editor?
I want to know if i can simply upload a picture of a person bmp. or something and it work's. Or if I have too create it with something else i really need help with this guy's so please answer.

Here's the explanation from the Beginner's FAQ:

Basically you import the frames of the character standing and walking in the four main directions, put them together in a view, then assign it to a character as Normal View.
