I've read this on the forums :

Where can I learn more about that? Is there a special feature of Translation files that I don't know about?

The numbers are to link to the corresponding voice clips (which get packed into… VOX files, if I remember correctly). I would guess they work the same in translation files as in other spoken lines within the code. You can have separate VOX files for the different translations, if you actually dub the game into multiple languages, but I'm not entirely sure how AGS decides which VOX file to use.

and as far as I can tell, SpeechCenter was not talking about line numbering in any sense. The manual calls  &3  a "speech file number" and that is what SpeechCenter was referring to.


Edit: Monsieur OUXX, please clarify your extremely ambiguous question. Are you asking about Voice Speech? Auto-numbering? Line numbering?

Well, he was talking about "line numbering" in the sense that the speech lines are numbered. The manual also calls them "speech numbers" for each "line of speech" (in the entry on "Auto-number speech files"), so it's a pretty natural term to use in a context where "line" can be assumed to mean "line of speech."

OK so the core of the feature is about speech files rather than translation files. Thanks! I didn't know that.
Open question : Is there any "known trick" used to make translations management easier by repurposing those numbers? I don't know, anything. Like cleaning an export of unused lines or whatever.
