Trouble with Diagonals.

I don't know if this belongs in beginner's or technical, but well, here it is. I'm having trouble with diagonal loops. Here's the scenerio.

My main character only has up, down, right, left for starters.

I've created an NPC character that only has animations for up, down, right and left but I've also created diagonal loops with one sprite for just standing. The trouble is, I can't get them to stand there in the diagonal positions. They only stand in one of the up, down, right or left positions. However, they do show the diagonal positions while turning, but that's not what I'm completely interested in having. So, you know, diagonal loops is checked in the character box. Is there something I'm missing perhaps? Any help would be divine.

I distantly recall there being discussion of this earlier, and the conclusion being that if the diagonal walking animations are missing the diagonal standing frames are only used for turning. This might even be documented somewhere, but I'm not so sure.
