Hello. I'm new to the forums and was very interested in the AGS engine. One of my favorite game genres are Point and Click Adventures. Before I start anything with AGS, I have one question, just how hard is it to have no scripting background and actually go and make a game? Is their any good books I can find for C# and Java? The first game I want to make is sort of like King's Quest. That's all. Thank you.

Even though it might be possible to do a game with no scripting it might be necessary to do just a little scripting. I learned most of what I know by reading the manual and going through the tutorials provided densming

Pro is the opposite of Con                       Kids of today are so much different
This fact can clearly be seen,                  Don't you know?
If progress means to move forward         Just ask them where they are from
Then what does congress mean?             And they tell you where you can go.  --Nipsey Russell

YES!!! This series will teach you pretty much everything you need to know about the AGS engine and scripting in a very noob-friendly manner...

And, by the time you understand everything it teaches you will be in a position to figure out everything it doesn't on your own!

I was scared to even define a variable or test one before I watched this series because every time I tried anything it crashed the compiler, and I just started to feel that scripting was and would always be beyond me...

And then I found demsing's YouTube series...And now I'm just a semi-incompetent coder, instead of a complete failure!

Thanks for the links. Now I can work on my game. Thanks again. :)

Welcome Lord Ed to the ags forums.

I first started messing with AGS just after it came out.... It was still quite a few years before I made my first attempt at making  a game. I knew nothing about scripting.

I Did not know the difference between a variable and a choc-ice (laugh)

It all looked very daunting to say the least. I made lots of mistakes, cried for help and banged my head a few times.

Slowly overtime things started to make sense and once i'd grasped the basics i started to run.

I can't thank the people who helped me enough (Khris kicked my butt a few times but it really helped) and even up to this day I still get their help if I need it.

The ags engine is very powerful and in the right hands can be a beast.

Take your time to read the manual, look on these forums, ask questions and anything that helps, make notes (i have 100's of text files of code that helps me remember when i forget how to do something).

Kings Quest type game would be something you would aim towards meanwhile do short games where you can hone your skills on the basics of scripting. It's not that difficult really.

I'v seen it so many times where newbies, with no skills who want to make the world's number one game (laugh)

Take your time, learn anything you can. Enjoy it and who knows, one day you could be making fantastic games (nod)

Good luck

I remember when I first discovered the AGS engine, and was a coding noob.
This is definitely a good place to start learning.

The way I learnt was by doing the tutorial in the manual, and studying the code in the templates.
Of course doing that will only get you so far (and not very far either). But it's a good way to start.

If you want to make a full game and have zero knowledge of scripting, then you'll have to pick one of the existing tempates, make 100% sure it's exactly what you want, and then strictly use it from end to finish.
