Title: walking down a hill..... and more
Post by: on Mon 28/07/2003 11:55:48
Hey again.

I just started my first ags game and hit a wall on the first room.

I´m trying to get my main character to walk down a hill, dissappearing behind it and then reappear in the distance, scaled down.

I´ve managed to figure out to control my walkbehind areas using the SetBase (x) and got the character walking behind the hill. Then my troubles start. I really need to set up three diffrent walkable areas (normal, walking down behind the hill, walking in the distence) that overlap each other (like in layers) and then I would turn them on/off depending on the location of the character. Problem is that ags doesn´t want to overlap walkable areas....... or does it? At least when I draw a walkable area on top of another it ereases the first one.....

Am I asking to much of ags..... am i missing something basic...... should I just go to sleep?

thanks,

skurken

Sadly, AGS does not support layered walkable areas, and this problem has been encountered before. Sorry to say, I personaly don't really see any way of doing this. Perhaps one of our scripting gurus might have an answer.

RickJ? Scorpiorus? SSH? Mommy?? :P

Hey I wanted to ask the same, because this way of walking as you described creates a reall depth illusion. Oh, sorry to hear that it isn't possible :(

Have the ability to walk up the hill, but just on one side, like the left half, and then make the behind walkview on the right side but only allow it if the user is so far over to the right, or whatever you see fit.  have the right side be one continuous one, and do the continuous scaling, and use a large difference so that when at the top of the hill, the person is big, and when further down, they are small.

try that

Thanks! I solved it using the Scummbuddy method.... looks kind of silly but it works.

I can´t seem to use reversed scaling in the "behind hill" walkable area.... like large(top) to small(bottom)  Why is that? Is it a bug in ags or just not possible?

thanks again,

You may just need to try it again, im not sure what would be causing that, just check all your checkboxes that you need and do it again, and let us know.

Thanks, but I tried it at least a million times last night  :'(

When I set up the scalable area, the ags editor says it´s fine...... moving the mouse over the area the scale numbers go from 70% top to 5% botton like it´s supposed to be... then I run the game and it reverses.... 5% top to 70% bottom. I go back to the editor and it has changed there too  ???

Sounds like a bug to me.... but what do I know  :P

I appreciate your help  :-*

thanks again

haha, you selected the wrong smiley face, i guess... ;)  you could just edit the other post to change the smiley/kissy face.

but anyways, im sorry to hear about your problem, if it continues, then, in preperation for Chris Jones return, you could

1.save your game and even make a copy of this gamesave
2.  set your main character to start in the said room at appropriate coordinates(not problem ones)
3. go into your game folder and delete all the other rooms unneccesary
4. save your game to A NEW FOLDER just to be sure
5. prepare to upload it to Chris Jones when he gets back unless

someone here knows whats wrong; he is able to fix it without seeing your game; or you somehow fix it.

if you should somehow fix it, then go ahead and tell us what happened, dont worry we wont make fun of you, at least not to your face

*oh my god, he made a kissy face at me*  ;D
