* Best Design - The style of the picture, architectural, landscape design, best mood, most evocative etc.
* Best Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites, including appropriate walking distances, good angle for character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood exits etc.

also remember:
i only have MS paint (not everyone can afford Paintshop).
That looks like a filter to me.
i actually drew it in mspaint and used windows movie maker to do a smudge effect thats the best i can do to mimic the real pros among us. (I'm so ashamed)
What do you think of it anyway.
I think it gives a nice relaxed mood.
Here's my entry...the lil' hermit's got high hopes. :)

A room in a run-down building taken over by squatters. Or it could be a crackhouse :D. YAY! Anyways, it's a shelter of some sort.

This is my very first entry into a BG Blitz. After so many unfinished blitz bgs, I finally got something done. Just goes to show low-res is quicker than high-res, at least for me :) (This is my first low-res attempt for zi blitz).
EDIT: Oh, sorry Bunny, I forgot. Yesterday, I was helping BunnyMilk with some perspective issues and I coerced him to start drawing a bg and then we'd go through it step by step. Anyways, this bg spawned from that. So I gotta give credit to Bunny for the foundations of the bg.
Hmm..ildu that looks...oddly familiar :/

My submission. Like a desolate tent in the middle of a ruined civilisation.

A small campsite, just a lean-to and a fire pit.

His "camp" is usually under the bridge. But the water is to high today and the weather is good.

s'il vous plaît. J'habite sous le Pont, rive droite, sous l'arche, au milieu, là  où j'ai mis une bouée.

Time to vote.
It may be too late, but still: here it is. Thanks to Krysis for how he made the remake of a SQ2 background. That showed me how to do it. Not half finished, but I don't have the time, since voting already started.

Technique: Sektor 13
* Best Idea - ildu
* Best Design - Clue
* Best Functionality - nihilyst
* Best Technique - Neil Dnuma
Best Idea - Strange Visitor: I gotta give props for the idea. It may not be tied in with the background, but the requirements were that it should include a shelter and that it does. Nice idea :D.
Best Design - Neil Dnuma: The composition is awesome, the colors are breath-taking and everything looks as it should.
Best Functionality - Nihilyst: I can already picture a character walking there, and oddly enough I can also picture what the character might look like.
Best Technique - Sektor 13: I just love Sektor's technique. There's no getting past that fact :D.
Best Idea: Ildu. And very nice bg to boot
Best Design: Neil Dnuma. Just wow. There's a lot of depth in that bg. And it's got great atmosphere.
Best Functionality: Nihylist. Definitely. Simple, to the point, and easy to work with and play in. :)
Best Technique: I'll have to reserve judgement on this one. I just can't decide between Sektor and Neil. I LOVE Sektor's bg style and the way everything just seems so real, but I'm a big fan of Neil's atmospheric style. I just can't vote for one against the other. Nice work on both.
Voting is now closed.
Congratulations to Neil Dnuma who won, with ildu at second and nihilyst at third place.
I'd like to thank all participants, the amount and quality of entries was more than I expected.
Wow, cool!
Thanks for the votes and kind words!
New Blitz is coming soon.
