There are way too little interesting things happening in telephone booths in adventure games,
so for this background Blitz you should go out make something interesting happen in an adventuregame background that has a phonebooth in it
Maybe the phonebooth is the main attraction of the background or it is blended into the scenery.
Will you show us the insides of a telephonebooth as a GUI with lots of clickable buttons and things?
Maybe there is something interesting happening inside the phonebooth or something is happening to the booth?
Is it in a crowded city or in a remote place in the country side? Next to a rundown building, a prison or is it even in the future?
You show us where you receive the best call in an adventure game.
Use as many colors as you like, draw or pixel in any style you like,
the only restriction is that the background has to be AGS compatible
(with a normal aspect ratio...)
Voting will happen in 3 categories once time is up.
The categories are: Concept, Artistic Execution, Playability
And here are the Trophies:
every participant can get the blue phonebooth!
Enter now!

Great theme!
I was just thinking though, I've been working in 1366x768... Is that ok? I've had my games set at that res for at least 6 months now. If not I'm going to have to phone this one in :D
Good luck everyone!
yessssssss
Harass me every day until I draw this, selmiak.

@Grok: You are freaking fast! This is the phonebooth with a fastastic view while talking :)
@OUXX: Do it! do it! just DO IT!
@Silverspook: If you want to use the background in you game later but haven't drawn this before and draw it for the contest I think you should of course draw it in your game's resolution.
Grok that's a really nice background. I get a studio ghibli concept art vibe from it. Like I can just imagine totoro running on screen to make a phone call.
I'm working on something, it'll fit right in into my Jake game. :-D
This will give me an excuse to start working on the village. ;)
@selmiak Only when I've changed into my blue leotards in a telephone booth
@Myinah Thanks. It does a bit :)
Just wanted to say...
@OUXX: Do it! do it! just DO IT!
anyone else planning on entering? Got something to show already?
Okay, I'll show a bit... not that I have more than this mind you (currently have NO free time :-\ ).

Nice job, Cassie!
And how the hell does Grok crank this stuff out so fast? Is that phone booth a TARDIS in which you brought your entry back from the future? :)
I'll be entering soon... Once I wrap my head around the geometry of phone boothees.
thats cool cassie. I'll come over for a coffee in that cafe in no time ;-D
Thanks. :)
Today's progress: Added ground floor, a few more window openings and a couple simple textures.

Modeled and rendered in Anim8or.
@cassie: It's nice to see progress, isn't it. Keep it up. This has such a warm mediterranean feel, maybe add some pillars everywhere to the corners or in front of the houses. Or even to the phonebooth :)
@jwalt: This is oldschool. Whenever you chose the middle booth, you can be sure that the 2 people in trenchcoats and wearing sunglasses inside the building, that are entering the other 2 booths on each side, are listening in to your important call giving you more directions in a complicated espionage murder case...
selmiak, spot on with the Mediterranean feel. ;)
jwalt, awesome you're back in tip top shape! (nod) I was wondering where you were.
@jwalt
Nice. I especially like the half seen Hat check counter :)
jwalt, that is beautiful.
Just noticed I have messed up the colours in the upper part of the street lamp. Meh.
Old version:

New version:

Edit: wanted to add a new version but thought better of it. This time I've managed to mess up the shading on the phone booth itself.
Edit2: This should be a little bit better.
Here is my first attempt at one of your glorious competitions :)
Could be a background for some detective adventure.
Epilogue: "The Last Call"
[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/6OFoUV4.png[/imgzoom]
@Kumpel: What a great first entry you got there with an awesome perspective on a cruel event. I'm puzzling together the clues already :)
@Kastchey: That is just beautiful. If I may give some critique/suggestion: add another layer of a bit brighter (more distant) trees behind the dark trees and don't show any field behind it, just some very bright blue or bright yellowgreen light shining through it. The top of the lamp is really a bit hard to distinguish from the dark trees, maybe make it more reflective? There are still 2 week left, feel free to play around with and polish your image as much as you like.
speaking of the time left...
@OUXX: Do it! do it! just DO IT!
not even one week into this contest, just starting page 2 of the thread and there are already 5 great entries, I love this forum and the creative people here ;-D

"President Trump is sending the Anti-Other Gestapo down from the Sky Palace! Renegaydz, get to your Hacker-Box!" (TM)
SilverSpook, that's just sick! And I mean it in a good way! Sweet! This makes me want to play neofeud even more ;-D
Thanks! The phone booth concept was the (artificial) heart of this piece, so thanks also selmiak for the theme. I rewatched Hackers and that bit of the Matrix where Agent Smith tries to ram Trinity in the booth and I had it; I was jacked in. :)
Hi everyone!
This is also my first ever entry.
It is actually a scene i have in my game, but i changed the concept of what happens there.
not trying to imitate Kumpel though! (laugh)
[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/VosYRFn.png[/imgzoom]
There is quite some heat on the streets there, Dor Hajaj! A gruesome first entry, I like it ;-D
btw you don't have to upscale your pixelart yourself when you use the imgzoom tags, these make the forum software scale the image :)
Oh hey Dor Hajaj!
I see you got rid of that pixel noise. Back to GIMP?
Yeah post it in original size, your upscaling is changing not only the outlines.
[imgzoom] ... [/imgzoom]
Very nice entries so far!!! Really.
Here's my work in progress. "Where's the phone booth" you'll ask? Well, it's an excellent question. The answer is: I have no idea yet where I want to put it! But
this phone booth is going to be super Parisian, that's for sure. Wait and see! ;)

Nice sketch CW! You do realize that now you have to finish it, right!? (nod)
@Ouxx: seriously now, this looks great already, the composition + background is nice, I'm excited to see how you fill the more imporant foreground. So yeah, Finish him!
@CW: Cool, is this a phonebooth in the woods? yeah, looks good and promising already, please finish it!
@cassie: How are the 3d things coming along?
Ooops, sorry I thought I had posted version 3, but guess not. (roll)

Spoiler
Will probably change those light poles, don't really like them. :-\
(http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww258/Cassiebsg/Jake/BG_Aldeia_Sketch3D_v4.png)
EDIT: Okay did a bit more work to it today, am getting happier with it now. :) Changed the lamps! Looking much better now! Need to add a few more detail to the roof tops and add some pipes and stuff, and then I'll add the detail to the textures and hope it'll look okay enough to consider it finished. You'll need to wait for v5 to see this. :P
As you can see, still working on the overall compo, scenery, and color balance.
Also there's a small reference to a classic from the 90's that starts in Paris. Can you guess which one? ;)

@Cassie: Cool! These lightpoles are cool when you have a night scene and they illuminate the whole scene in a moody light. Together with some candles on the tables this can look cool. hot. romantic. On a day they are too many. Maybe throw some pillars with statues in there or some small barriers between the chairs and the passengers. The one plant is exactly in front of the one edge towards the cafe door and when you don't see that edge the perspective looks odd.
@OUXX: something from gabriel knight maybe?
@CW: It's a telephone in a tree, isn't it? Do it!
I like how you put your progress pictures in spoilers, makes viewing this thread even more voyeristic :-D
No pillars and no statues, sorry. This is a little village in the middle of "nowhere".
Which plant are you talking about? The one on the middle/foreground or the reflex in the glass door? I have reduced the level of reflection from the glass, cause it was giving some weird views, and I might change the camera angle slightly once I'm happy with the model. ;)

@OUXX: something from gabriel knight maybe?
Nope. This game starts in Paris
and is French!
New update: This is now the final perspective. I have all the cheats I need in there for the background to be functional in a real game. ;)

By the way, I'd like to say that I won't be entering the competition. I'll finish the drawing, yes, but I don't want to receive votes (if any). It's a bit cheating to draw something and then shove a phonebox into the scene. I'm doing this for the pleasure of participating, the artistic stimulation, and to support the real entries! The more the merrier. ;-D
I guess I cheat a lot then. :P But I enjoy using these blitzes to forward my game and challenge my self. (nod)
Anyway, this is most likely my last update before the "final" version...
Spoiler
The houses at the back, I guess they work as they are, but maybe a bit of paint pealing will make them more interesting. Still need to work on giving "depth" to my textures. And this village looks like the cleanest I ever saw. (laugh)
Feel free to PM suggestions/critic if you have any!
@cassie: Cool! The second plant from the right is the one I mean that is exactly in front of the ledge. This makes the persepctive look odd. I'd either move it to the left so the viewer can see the ledge and make sense of the slope uphill there or have more flat ground with chairs and have some kind of wall follow the road uphill. The red rood on the yellow house in the bg looks fitting, but somehow the grey texture on the cafe and the red roof don't fit. I don't know, maybe make the texture a bit more muddy reddisch orangish or darken the roof. Dunno.
@Ouxx: But the whole competition is about cramming a phonebooth into a nice scene OR have the phonebooth as the 'protagonist' of the scene. You did nothing wrong unless you don't FINISH IT!
only 4 days left to go, if you want to enter this intriguing and tense competition and drawing activity about various means of communication last minute, now is the time to start sketching at least!
It's so annoying, I'm at work and some image hosting sites are blocked. I cannot see CassieBg's entries. :'(
I can tell you it's awesome. But as you can't see it, think, this is probably as bad as if someone was to make a great background for the comp and then won't let people vote on it ;)
And jfyi I added some trophies to the competition. You can see them in the first post and get them by entering and then receiving a lot of votes for your hard work. Only like 3,5 days left, if you want to get it get crunching!

That's amazing, M. Ouxx! Love the use of color. Your development as an artist is an inspiration!
Is this a specific actual location or just a Parisian mash-up from imagination?
M.OUXX, this is very, very impressive. I've always been a little envious of the artists who can pull off a panorama perspective just like that.
And for me the picture perfectly fits the "make something interesting happen in an adventuregame background that has a phonebooth in it" and "it is blended into the scenery" bits so can't see why it wouldn't qualify as an entry =)
selmiak, thanks for the crits!
I've tried to see if I can apply your suggestion, see my first post if you like.
Okay, not perfect and missing a couple pigeons that the old man (to the right) is feeding, but am happy with it for now (am sure that in a few months I'll think it's crap (laugh) ).

Well if you look at the several iterations you'll see that there was a lot of trial and error.
Also, there was of course a massive use of vanishing lines, I just hide them on the final drawing.

Well maybe if you were standing at the top of the Buttes Chaumont's hill you could have a
downhill view like this and see the Sacré Coeur in the distance. But the scene here is definitely imaginary.
okay, time's up. I hope noone need an extension as I'm a day late already. Sorry, Halloween took too long and I had to sleep a lot. It was quite fun though :)

Even if it's hard and you want to vote for everyone, please decide on a winner in each category and only give 1 vote for 1 entrant in 3 different categories, that are Concept, Artistic Execution, Playability
don't mind me just bumping this thread to make a new 'new reply' button appear and tell you, yes, you, that your votes are accepted now.
Don't leave these great entries without any votes at all! They are all gathered in the post above to make viewing easier. Vote now! Everyone can vote, it doesn't matter if you entered the competiton or not, you just need an opinion or the ability to write down some names and hit the post button :P
They are so great, I just can't decide 8-0
Yah, some problem, can't decide! :-\
I'll give it a try then.
Concept: Crinson Wizard (a phone in a tree sounds like an awesome concept, wish though you had finished it :P. Runner up jwalt, not only you can phone, but you can check in your jacket, umbrella, etc. And have all sort of weird interactions with the 2 guys in the next booth trying to listen in your conversation!
Artistic Execution: Monsieur OUXX, I have no idea how you can pixel like! Runner up Kastchey, though my eyes say the booth should be darker. Not so much light gets through when you have such dense vegetation.
Playability: SilverSpook, nice hacker box. (laugh) Plus there's tons of "click" possibilities... (just wish your screen would fit in mine without me needing to slide back and forth, maybe submit a smaller version next time? ;) ).
Note: Runner up are just in case CW and Monsieur OUXX aren't really "in the race"... (roll)
Come on people, some voting is needed! :-D (I'll myself will vite as soon as my damn network will let me see the pictures)
Concept: Crimson Wizard (I dig it!). Runner-up: Kastchey
ArtEx: Monsieur OUXX (haha I'm voting for you and you can't stop me!). Runner-up: Grok
Playability: Kastchey (apart from working well with exits, walkable areas, potential hotspots, etc., I feel like this bg gives me a good sense of WHY it's here, and possible gameplay options). Runner-up: CassieBSG
Here is my vote
Concept SilverSpook
Artistic Kastchey
Playability Dor Hajaj
Concept: Kumpel - I like the unique angle on the phone booth here. Very Hitchcockian.
Artistic Execution: CassieBSG - I know how much work 3D is, and that's a lot of work! Good job!
Playability: Jwait - Because this is the only entry where you can actually see exactly what will happen play-wise, and also cause it's the most phone-booth-centric of all the entries, in my view.
Concept: Grok - clean and beautiful
Art: Kastchey - just like a modern fairytale
Playability: SilverSpook - sooo many details and stuff to explore
just a reminder, voting ends tonight, I'll annouce the winner tomorrow (or tonight (or vote myself until I like the result...))
and since there is a tie already I cast my votes now and add more ties but one final winner, here are my votes first:
Artistic execution: Monsieur OUXX, I just <3 them pixels, closely followed by Kastchey
Playability: kumpel. Cool perspective, everything in sight and lots of stuff to click on
Concept: SilverSpook, these colors are great, the hint at a bigger gameworld but still in the image, yeah.
So counting up all votes this leads to the following end results:
3rd (http://i.imgur.com/zxrttKS.png)
Kumpel / Crimson Wizard
2nd (http://i.imgur.com/pKYkrFO.png)
Kastchey / Monsieur OUXX
1st (http://i.imgur.com/7nEOfKU.png)

It was great fun hosting this competition and a big honour to see so many great entries roll in. Thanks to all participants and congratulations to all winners. Wear your trophies proud, this was a hard competition. So hard that cat couldn't decide and didnt't even vote... but that would have added even more ties probably.
Big Congratulations to SilverSpook, have fun hosting the new coloring ball and finish Neofeud now plz :)
Omg, I won third place with a sketch which I forgot about. :embarrassed:
Well, that is very embrarassing. I guess I must finish it now.
Woah! I'm honored to take the gold in this competition, there were some really excellent entries in here and seriously doubted it would happen!
Congrats to all of the entrants and voters of the Background Blitz. Stay tuned as I figure out how the background competition thing works -- I'll have the next one up soon!
Congrats Silverspook! :D
Kastchey, enjoy the trophy!!!
Also, a word for Dor Hajaj: You didn't get a prize but your background was simple but with backgrounds like that you can create a very atmospheric game. I love pixel art that has a simple color schema.
That said, I dodn't understand how CW got more votes than other finished backgrounds ???
somehow I don't understand how you even got votes, even if you didn't want to enter the competition :P
Even if he didn't want to receive votes, he did post work-in-progresses of his background the most number of times. A thousand lies make a truth... :)
Oh wow cool! Thanks for the votes!
I love that trophy (bronze looks cooler anyway 8-))and am happy that you liked my first blitz.
Thanks all for the votes! Also feel kind of bad about winning the first background contest I entered, although I won't lie- that Hacker Box background took a solid five days at least. At least I FINISHED IT. (Lol, not trying to dig anyone who didn't end up finishing- it's a lot of hours! I wish I could do this stuff faster but I'm too OCD and anal about minute details.)
