Title: Background Blitz - Sept 03 - 22 - vote!
Post by: Neil Dnuma on Mon 03/09/2007 01:17:27
Sorry, I've been busy so this took a few days, but here we go:

PARIS IN THE 18th CENTURY
Imagine you're creating a BG for a scene set in Paris in the 18th Century. You'd normally need to do some research to get the "correct feel". It can be a exterior or interior, but should include elements to link it to this time and place. Finding reference material shouldn't be to hard, many paintings have survived and tons of movies (and also TV-series) are set in this epoch (largely thanks to the revolution). It'd be great if links to the reference material were provided. Good luck!

Voting will start at the end of the 15th unless the number of entires are below three, or anyone asks for any extensions.

EDIT: Extended 1 week.

Inspiration - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4e/Prise_de_la_Bastille.jpg

the Prise de la Bastille on a nice sunny day. (its textured so it's meant to look all pixelly)
Im not use to making backgrounds so I know it sucks. (i normally make logo's and stuff.)

I just wanted to let you know that the "Prise de la Bastille" (litterally meaning "Taking of the Bastille") is the "battle" depicted in the painting you found on Wikipedia, not the place (which is The Bastille prison). And by the way, that's what we celebrate on July 14th (our National Holiday).

Nice work though. Simple but effective.

Heh, you shouldn't be French to know that, I bet some of them don't. Not my point, but this is general knowledge of history in my world.

Oh, and if I get my computer working by the end of this, expect for a hasty entry. Don't wait for me though, because it's all broken and I'm pretty much out of money. The theme intrigues me though.

Sorry, this is not a finished background, more like a 30-minute sketch. No time to finish it, but it was fun  :) Don't know how much 18th century it is, it turned out to be just your average european town square.. oh well

No reference pictures, it's completely from my head, but if it reminds you of something... well thats quite possible

Alright, ending this now. I guess the topic wasn't too interesting. Or people are either lazy or busy with other things. Maybe it's not the background season.

At least we have two backgrounds to vote for!

The voting will last till monday;

The categories:

Idea - The underlying idea to the background. Doesn't
necessarily have to coincide perfectly with the theme of the
week, just strike you as interesting/amusing/inspiring; a place
you'd really enjoy visiting within a game.

Atmosphere - How well the image manages to evoke a certain feeling or mood.

Design - How well the elements in the image are designed,
such as landscapes, buildings, decorations, clouds, doorknobs,
etc.

Composition - How well the elements in the image work
together/are positioned in relation to each other.

Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites, i
ncluding appropriate walking distances, a good angle for
character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood
exits, etc.

Technique - How well the ideas are executed in form of
rendering.

All votes for Seaduck. Even though it does look like your average european town square a guillotine, or some fleurs-de-lis would make it french.

@Neil
Too busy :)
