Post by: on Thu 02/02/2006 19:35:29
Okay, here is the topic (i went far back in background blitz history but couldn't find something like this_.

Topic: The Bridge

Colours: 256

Res: 320x200 OR 320x240

Voting: (thanks to Loominous for the system)
Voting will take place on the 16th and 17th of February. Please give one vote in each of the following categories:

* Best Idea - The underlying idea to the background. Doesn't neccesserily have to coincide perfectly with the theme of the week, just strike you as interesting/amusing/inspiring; a place you'd really enjoy visiting within a game.

* Best Design - The style of the picture, architectural, landscape design, best mood, most evocative etc.

* Best Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites, including appropriate walking distances, good angle for character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood exits etc.

* Best Technique - How well the ideas are executed in form of rendering.

sorry about that, but there was already an 'enchanted forest' in a previous background blitz. I had this guilty feeling someone might have already started on the forest ... sorryÃ,  8) I viewed at previous comps too late

I can't remember where i got it ... hmmm, long time ago.

I'm sorry.  I'm new to this. What are we supposed to do again? I did a search but nothing came up.

Draw a background (following the rules), that's it.

What happened to the thread for the previous Blitz? I thought I'd link to it to let theatrx see, but it doesn't appear on the board any more.  ???

Previous Blitz (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=24601.0)
You can get to it through Darth's previous posts (or anyone's that posted in it, obviously), but for some reason it's not on the board. Same thing happened with the coding comp I hosted before Christmas..

For some reason both of them are the very end, the last page of the Competitions and Activities board.

Its called "under the bridge".

This is where Old Man McGee Lives, he was kicked out of the hostel, and now has to live here. Alone.

i did this pic for a game im busy with. although, the pic is far from finished. but i wont be working on it for quite while, so i'll enter what I have now.

it's just a normal background pic, so no big idea behind it. and the water bothers me immensely.

But hey, if you guys just want to locate the more recent activities, why not just use the Hall of Fame (http://www.bigbluecup.com/yabb/index.php?topic=22522.msg306102#msg306102) ? :-\

I was going to colour it but decided on a tonal piece instead. About 45 minutes in total.

Zooty, great work! Love the idea.

Looks awesome Mordy!

Dan, That's really good! But you must colour it, it's very sketchy and concept artyÃ,  ;D I'd love to see something like that finished!

More ENTRIES!!

sektor 13: that's brilliant, of course.

Well, usually I do start them, but they always become too ambitious a task and they're left undone. But the good thing is I've been able to implement one or two of them in my projects. I began sketching for this one as well, but it was overrun by another inspiration (which actually proved to be quite a good thing :)). I'll be announcing my game soon, so you'll see something then :). Needless to say, I love the blitzes whether I enter or not.

You are standing on the bridge-like construction outside the service entrance of the crab-people's palace.
Sadly you do not have the time to admire the view or the gorge below you since you have to flee for your life. Next time you might think twice before poking a crab with a crown on it's head in the eye.

whoever is going to win this comp (im looking at you, sektor and danclarke), please host a "Paintover Monkey Island 1 background".

that way we have a whole monkey island 1 remake, thx to buloght's sprites.
it could work. think about it. hehe.

Thanks ;)
I thought about a game where you play something really small, for example a bacteria, virus or some microorganism who is responsible for cold and flu - and of course it wants to take the bridge from one human organism to the other ;)

quicky = how many hours?

Just over an hour, I cheated on the clouds with a filter for the base.Ã,  Lots of stuff in there was done in quick ways rather than 'painting' or pixel by pixel.Ã,  Examples: Ropes = Lines with noise filter, bridge=basic shape, with quick strokes of color in the general direction of the boards, then a couple quick erase strokes for missing boards.Ã,  And like I said, it turned out better than I expected :)
Edit: (Someone asked so...) Grass=green+noise filter+"chicken scratch",  Water=Gradient+Noise+motion blur+painted details,  Yes, bridges are mirrored, Path=brown+noise+painted details, Cliffs=Painted rough+edge enhance+dup layer edge traced and overlayed+painted details.  Think that was all.

Best Idea - Tottoro of course! Brilliant

Best Design - Dan Clarke! The house, the road and the little bridge. Innovation and a great idea and design.

Best Functionality - Sektor 13. Brilliant. The entrance, the exit and bridge. No scaling really neede, so just perfect for me.

Best Technique - Littlebulesmurf. Not only he/she (no time to look at the profile) provided the BGs but gaves as a thorough explanation of what he/she did.

EDIT: Whoops, I can't read. Okay, seperate catagories, eh?

Best Idea - I agree, Tottoro.

Best Design - I vote for Biothlebop... I love gloopy, stringy looking rock, and the colours are interesting.

Best Functionality - Sektor, I think... like Nik said, no scaling needed and it's all very clear.

Best Technique - I'm not sure if I'm judging the right thing, but again, biothlebop. I love the technique he used for the bridge as well as the mountains in the background.

Best Idea - The award goes to DanClarke. There weren't so many unique ideas in this blitz and I didn't want to give the credit straight to the craziest one (Totoro :)), so I chose Dan's image. It portrays a different style of a bridge in a playful and appealing manner.

Best Design - This goes straight to DanClarke. What can I say? Although it's not in a finished state, it still oozes great design. Very moody and pretty.

Best Functionality - Going to Sektor 13. Sektor's image was one of the few backgrounds that could be identified directly as adventure game backgrounds. Very functional, but a little too dark.

Best Technique - The winner is LilBlueSmurf. This looks like a unique technique and the end-result looks great. I'd like to see a larger version of this, or even a whole game with the same style :P.

Huhu thanks, wasn't sure i would win as some great backgrounds were presented.

Well I know that Mordalles wanted MI "background remake" for the next competition.
I already noticed that new thread was opened (after Mordalless post)  for MI style background, so i don't see the point making another one. Hope there are no hard fillings.

Thanks again for votings...

I will start the new thread as soon as i check old ones..

While i was trying to make a new competition I found out that my picture didn't comply with the criteria, i have more than 256 colors, i decreased colorst to 256 now, but still, my picture didn't fit the rules so i think it should be disqualified !?
???
