Topic:
HOSPITAL INTERIOR
Guidelines:
Should be pretty easy to interpret. Any type of hospital from any age goes. And any type of room you could find in a hospital. Thanks to books and movies (and TV) hospitals have often been romanticized. If you're familiar with eg. Lars Von Trier's TV series "Riget"/"The Kingdom" you know what I mean (I believe there was an american remake of this, with Stephen King involved - might be crap, I haven'tseen it). Other examples would be found in Kill Bill, The Godfather, ER, etc.
Here's something which may inspire you:

There are no size or palette restrictions - as long as it's AGS-compatible.
Voting: (thanks to Loominous for the system)
Voting will take place on the 16th and 17th of January . Please give one vote in each of the following categories:
* Best Idea - The underlying idea to the background. Doesn't neccesserily have to coincide perfectly with the theme of the week, just strike you as interesting/amusing/inspiring; a place you'd really enjoy visiting within a game.
* Best Design - The style of the picture, architectural, landscape design, best mood, most evocative etc.
* Best Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites, including appropriate walking distances, good angle for character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood exits etc.
* Best Technique - How well the ideas are executed in form of rendering.
It would be nice if you would give a small explanation while voting, to provide the artists with useful feedback (check out previous votings by eg. Ildu, Rel, Darth, Ginny or Andail for good examples).
my slightly twisted entry, I'm still playing around weith getting this style right. Apologies.

EDIT: I updated this so it is how i would want it to appear in a game:

What happened?
Clive McKray had been in this room, with severe psychological issues. He would not listen to anyone else, but demanded everyone listene to him, "he has something the world needs to know". Unfortuneatley, the medical system failed clive, and he was locked in this room, with only his insecurities for company.
One day, the doctors just stopped coming back.
This is my first entry to a bg blitz and it wasdone in MSPaint from scratch. no reference and about 30 mins mouse work. It shows.

So here's my entry:

It's just a hallway of a typical hospital.
I'm in just wait for me
EDIT: here we go, A mental hospital.
"Dont mind the patients, they're insane..."

EDIT: (Get it? The morgue is across the hall from shock therapy? :-X)
It is my first room in this competition is a gynecology room. ;D

Crap, I'm out... :P
That's some weird-ass lighting you got there, arcangel. Looks good, though.
THX Ildu, I made with Flash and 3 or 4 hours of work. :)

It's an American Civil War era Confederate Field Hospital.
I have no more time ... but I want to post it anyway.
I was gonna add an observation tower off in the distance and some more details. Alas ... time worked against me.
very nice idea darth

Anything that would work with AGS is allowed. So yes, it is allowed.
And darth, that looks amazing and it's very imaginitive.
yup he makes a good change in Best idea and best design :D
I'm working on one, but I'm not entirely sure how it'll end up. It will be my first real pixel background ever, and I seem to be less good than my mind's eye is in making these things up :)
Yikes, feels like it was ages since I participated here now.
A really crappy entry with bad perspective and wierd-ass shading, but it's also my first background for a very, very long time...
Just felt the need to whip something up. :)
Great entries so far, though! :)
Well, here's mine:

Don't mind the compression artifacting; it's like that for file size. The actual BG is much cleaner.
And, yes, I've put this into AGS and built it as a normal room; works great!
What program you do that, RocketGirl ?

3D Studio MAX 3.1. Antiquated, I know, but my copy is legal and I'm too broke to upgrade.

Edited by mod: Seems that the img tag works only if you put width before height, also you don't need the quotes when specifying size of an image.
Edited by me: Thanks!

MSPaint, 320x200 and 6 colours.
I wanted to do sumthing very creepy and dark and kind of ended up using Zooty's style. Its just the best style to make a horror game and it kind of happened byitself, so dont call me a copycat.
you copycat
ohh creepy!! I like it... *cough* copycat *cough*

The phsychiatric ward! :) The blue and black thing on the side of the table is an electric drill.
everyone stealing my idea
Hehe :D Just post it, and hope for the best! ;)
I was like the third post...
Oh, yes I knew that ::) I was just... erm... Testing you! Yesh! Testing... Now if you will excuse me i will go work on my game in a dark corner!
have fun ;)
Many nice entries!
If anyone else wants to take part, there is about 24 hours left before voting begins.
I really really doubt there are any more entries. Why dont we just vote now? :)
I might enter, don't start the voting early.
You have only a couple of hours left, so better get to work :)
Nono. I'm waiting for a background to fall out of my nose.
Regardless of when voting starts, well...obviously I vote for me. 8)
So has voting started? I vote for DARTH as well.
Best Idea: Darth
Best Design: Darth
Best Funtionality: Me or Darth
Best Technique: Archangel
Fine, start early.
(Am not participating, but thanks for the theme, I got one more game background started.)
Voting havent started, due to someone might enter. Depending on wether a bg will fall out his nose or not.
EDIT: I was obviously wrong!
EDIT 2: I vote foooor.... Are one allowed to vote for himself/herself?
I'll go ahead and vote.
*Best Idea: Ã, Darth Mandarb, I really like the concept behind this one over all the others, very original given the topic.
*Best Design: Ã, Krysis, hands down. Ã, I love it, lots of emotion to be conveyed.
*Best Functionality: Ã, cpage, Ã, Out of all the entries, yours is really the only one I think I would put enought effort into when it came to adding objects and making a character walk around, the others would be difficult to match up.
*Best Technique: Ã, Gameboy, light and shodow matches up almost perfectly, and it's not too detailed, making it rather ideal for say, a whole game in this style.

Dudes, hold your horses. Neil Dnuma will announce the beginning of voting when ever he damn near pleases.
My clock says January 15, the topic says, 1-15, I put two and two together and vote. The end for my logic. :)

Doesn't seem like 24 hours to me. :=
----- EDIT -----
Screw it.
I got a little bit of crit on it at one point, concerning the lights, but it was not really advice, but a push into the direction I was already about to go.
I am for sure going to use this background in a game.
Now, however, it's time to VOTE.
Please refer to the voting system described in the first post.
The winner will be announced in 48 hours.

@Akumayo: If you want to change your vote, do so, if not, don't do anything and it'll be counted as it is.
@Rocketgirl, taffytom, Vict0r: A piece of advice: don't vote for yourself, it's silly, only politicians do that.
My votes are sound...
Best Idea - Krysis. the whole horror thing is cool.
Best Design - Archangel, that really looks so cool and i like the isometric view. everything is very clean.
Best Functionality - Gameboy, i can really see my char walking there.
Best Technique - archangel, again, same reasons as before.
best idea: krysis
best design: archangel
best functionality: darth madarb
best technique: darth mandarb

But voting for other people is what people who don't want to win do. Are you suggesting we abstain? Cuz I can certainly do
that. :)
My vote is Darth in all Catagories

This is as much a competition as it is to practice your skills. Don't be childish and just vote for the background you think is the best.
Edit:
My votes:
* Best Idea:
Darth Mandarb* Best Design:
cpage* Best Functionality:
cpage* Best Technique:
cpage
Best Idea - The oscar goes to Darth Mandarb. Usually the most inventive, unusual and workable idea takes the prize in this category, and Darth's civil war hospital tent is just that. It happens to stray from the topic just enough for it to work perfectly. Everyone else in the competition sticked with more traditional environments, so Darth's background stood out the best.
Best Design - The winner is Darth Mandarb. This one was between Darth and cpage, but I just loved Darth's whole image. Enough said.
Best Functionality - The lucky guy is cpage. I felt like cpage deserves some of the praise. His background was very nice and inventive. But above all it was a background I could imagine seeing in a game. It would totally work with sprites and whatnots. The walkable areas are quite small, but workable, and it's easily understood.
Best Technique - This goes to Darth Mandarb. I like the semi-realistic look, the crisp outlines and the wonderful colors. It really depicts the time and topic very well.
Best Idea - cpage; looks like a morgue -> dead bodies -> dead :D
Best Design - Darth Mandarb; I like a lot. I couldn't have thought of such a scene myself.
Best Functionality -Ã, cpage; nearest to my style might be the main reason. I can almost see the coroner from the city where my game's taking place standing behind the table...
Best Technique - cpage; Just... perfect. For my taste, that is.
And here it comes...
Best idea - Darth Mandarb, of course... So brilliant idea!
Best design - Darth Mandarb, again. I've always loved Darth's graphics.
Best functionality - cpage, really good work.
Best technique - Darth Mandarb. Nice, realistic, and good colors.
best idea, design: cpage
best tehnique: Darth
best functionality: mozza
LD
best idea: Darth Mandarb
best design: Rocketgirl
best functionality: cPage
best technique: Krysis
Arcangel, you forgot technique.
I vote for myself in every category. Oh but I didn't enter lol
*ahem* Hmm.
Best Idea - Darth Mandarb.
Good idea, it stands out from amongst all the entries, which is good. I don't like the gradients though, other than the sky.
Best Design - Darth Mandarb.
Nice scene, nice design.
Best Functionality - cpage.
I can actually imagine the background in a game. Just looking at the background gives a lot of ideas what could be done in the room if it was actually used in game.
Best Technique - cpage.
Darth and cpage have quite similar styles, but I prefer cpage's background more. As mentioned earlier, I don't like the usage of gradients and what seems like usage blur tool in Darth's background. The lighting in cpage's background is very moody, but I think it could be even more moody if the lighting was stronger.
I would have to vote for Darth Mandarb on all 4 counts, with Arcangel coming a close second in the Best Functionality category.
Best Idea - Zooty
He created a back story to "set the scene" ... worked for me!
Best Design - cpage
While some of the 3D backgrounds look nice, the "hand crafted" feel of this one grabbed my attention more!
Best Functionality - cpage
of all the entries, this one's layout most felt like an AG background.
Best Technique - Krysis
the style of this one stood out to me the most!
* Best Idea - Darth Mandarb - Very original idea and it looks great.
* Best Design - cpage - Has a lot of atmosphere to it.
* Best Functionality - Zooty - Would work great in a game if the sprites were kept in the same style.
* Best Technique - Arcangel - I really like the clean almost 3D style of this.
Best Idea: Darth Mandarb
Best Design: Darth Mandarb
Best Functionality: cpage
Best Technique: Darth Mandarb
A good quality job by all participants as well. :=
Best Idea: Darth â€" for being inventive enough to not only move away from the typical indoor hospital, but to shift in time too (and actually being historically accurate!).
Best Design: Zooty â€" the sketchy style, skewed objects & mind-numbing colours makes it feel very deranged. You've made an unpleasant room which suits your aim perfectly. Great story about the patient XD
Best Functionality:Arcangel â€" clear graphics, easy to see & move around, plus a number of fun objects to play with ("Bed goes up, bed goes down...").
Best Technique: Cpage â€" it really grabbed my attention (and wouldn't let go). It's easy to tell what each part of the image is, while still looking detailed & moody. Nice contrasting mix of subtle red/green too.
Final results:
Best Idea: Darth Mandarb by far!
Best Design: Darth Mandarb, ahead of cpage
Best Functionality: cpage, runner-up: Darth
Best Technique: Darth Mandarb ahead of cpage and Archangel
WINNER: Darth Mandarb
Congrats, Darth, this wasn't really exciting, but surely because of your great BG! Now start a new blitz!
Woohoo!!! Thanks for the votes! It was a good competition this time! I'll start the next one asap!
