Title: Coloring ball: That Place Past the Woods (Winner!)
Post by: Kastchey on Tue 30/07/2013 09:16:33
So, it took long enough but here it is! :)

That Place Past the Woods

Theme:
There is a place past the dark, thick woods that would surely attract anyone's attention... or would it?
Use the shape to picture a building: a house, a castle, a cottage, a shrine, a hostel, a police station, a zombie breeding farm.. anything!

Rules:
1. You can rotate or mirror the shape.
2. Very minor alterations to the outline are fine (1-2p).
3. You can use any of the two supplied outlines. I originally made the big one, but realized it *may* be too big to be fun for low res artists.
4. Waiting for submissions until the 9th of August.

Have fun! :)

Edit:
Trophies added:

Looked at the shape. Appeared to me to be a chimney or tower on the left side. When I followed the line around to the right side, I saw a female face. Woods? Tower? Female? Rapunzel, of the letting down her hair fame.

I work with MSPaint, so the alpha channel is shot. Does it matter for this competition?

Brilliant! Love your use of the given shape :)

And it's completely fine to use a single colour background instead of transparency.

@ Kastchey

Wondering if it might be worthwhile to extend the contest a bit? Folks are off to Mittens, or making box art, I guess.

Once I saw the deadline, I said to myself, I don't need to make anything for 3 weeks...*yawn*

IMO, It's plenty of time for a coloring ball. I think the more time you have to make something, the less early entries you see.

@NickyNyce

I don't think we ever had three weeks. Look at rule four, and consider the "30/07 - 09/08" in terms of which is the month and which is the day. Kastchey can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the contest is over. That's why I thought an extension might be in order.

I think the problem here was the difference between American and European date format - MM/DD vs DD/MM.

To clear up all the confusion, I'll make August 18th the new deadline, and try to whip up some trophies in the meanime :)

Wow. Here I am thinking that we have until September 8th to make something...lol

I thought he did that because of the reasons that you mentioned jwalt..  ooops

Ill make something, and so should at least a couple of others too, it's a good shape and theme.

good job by the way, jwalt. And thanks for the heads up.

Anyone still working on an entry? Nicky?

Also, I've added trophies to the main post :)

Now I feel really bad. I held this coloring ball up for a week and still don't have a finished product. I was going to tell jwalt to host the next one anyway, so lets just do that.

sorry for the delay, and sorry for not getting in on this, I liked the shape.

Hey, no worries :) No need to feel bad over something that's just for fun.

I'll be closing the competition tomorrow as planned, so if anyone is still working on an entry, you still have more than a day to make it!

Cool, waiting for your entry Miez.

Okido, here's my entry...

The arrival of Terran Trade Federation vessels at the New Brasilia Colony outpost on Rigel XIV, as seen from the fringes of the Lurkwoods

Can I get brownie points for the most pretentious title? ;)

Awesome Miez, it was worth the wait!

The competition has now been closed for new entries, thread open for voting until the 25th of August.

"Awesome," indeed. I'm often amazed at some of pixel art I'm seeing in these forums! My vote goes for Miez. I wouldn't mind having that hanging on my living room wall, or seeing it as cover art on one of the SF Magazines I buy.

My vote goes to JWALT - very clever use of the shape (especially with the face!) and I like the fresh colors...

Now, if they'd only figure out a way to keep me from eating the paint.

Both are really good.

I like jwalt's idea, but my vote will go to Miez for execution.  Well done to both of you!

Wow, tough... well , Meiz's entry is absolutely beautiful, but I really love jwalt's idea and use of the shape, so I'm voting for jwalt this time.

We have a tie - Miez and jwalt scored two votes each!

In this case, I declare jwalt the winner for the clever use of the given shape and an interesting idea.
The first prize goes to you, along with the honour of hosting the next (hopefully more successful) coloring ball!

The second prize goes to Miez for his stunningly beautiful futuristic landscape.

Thanks both for participating, and everyone else for votes and comments. See you in the next round!
(and apologies for the horrible slacking on my part, the last two weeks have been a bit more busy than usual..)

Thanks. I have a real feeling that more voters would have given Miez the victory; I'm still fascinated with his image.

I'll endeavor to come up with a shape, shortly. This is my first time running one of these, so please let me know if I do anything wrong.

Great entries, both of you. I started to make a picture of a "The Princess and the Pea"-style bed, but then I ran out of time (and inspiration).

Congrats JWalt! Excellent work :D
It's a shame only 2 people entered this one... curious to see what you come up with next, JWalt.

@Adeel, Sunny - You're probably correct, only I got this dire warning when I tried to create a topic. I suspect I had the authorization, since I won, but I was still reluctant to proceed. See what happens when a nOOb gets to run things. Mr. Miez would have done it properly, and his shape would have been well enough crafted that it wouldn't have been open to interpretation. (laugh)
