Title: February MAGS Competition
Post by: on Sun 01/02/2004 12:45:53
Theme- Zombie Nightmare

Rules for February
The game must take place in a future when almost all people are zombies.

If you have seen Zombie movies like 28days later or the classic movie day of the dead then you know what I'm talking about.  8)

- It must be one animated background.
- One of the characters must be a movie star or a clown.
- Inventory Items who must be in the game is.
One Axe and a book.

No restrictions on color depth and resolution.

And the most important is
Lot's of blood ;)

Good luck people...

Hmm, well the rules are pretty much the opposite of all my game ideas and visions, so I think this is a good month to make a short game just for fun, with no deep story..
Actually, I dont quite see any variations on story in these rules, though I could if I tried.. Anyway, Im entering with a small games, stay tuned for more ;)

One animated background as in "there must be one animated background" or "the game must take place in one animated background?"
Title: Re:February MAGS Competition
Post by: Damien on Sun 01/02/2004 20:48:33
"there must be one animated background" is my guess.

Quote- One of the characters must be a movie star or a clown

Can it be a fictional movie star?

Quote- Inventory Items who must be in the game is.
One Axe and a book.

Are we limited to Axe and a book, or can we use some more?

Yeah, but hey, it'd make my job easier.
Title: Re:February MAGS Competition
Post by: Ginny on Sun 01/02/2004 21:19:48
Yeah, a few things:

Can I interpert zombies in any way I want?
Can I interpert blood in any way I want? ;)
Do you mean a famous movie star or just a character who's job is playing in movies (sorta what Damien asked)?
:)

Post by: Minimi on Sun 01/02/2004 21:49:36
hmm, these rules are straight against my motto, wich is "no violence, no blood, no bad language and childrenplay-guaranteed"... and I could probably just start a debate about why I dislike the whole zombie thing and blood idea, but I won't ;)

I'll just get ahead with my entry for last month The Windmill... and hope you all have a fun mags :)
Title: Re:February MAGS Competition
Post by: on Sun 01/02/2004 21:52:37
hmm ok lot's of questions.. :P

There must be one animated background some where in the game.
you can use what ever moviestar you like.
And it can be a fictional movie star.
The axe and the book must be in the game else theres no Inventory limit.

I actually thought of an idea for this, that could be turned into a children's type game (if you used green blood for the zombies, or something). I'll try to make it, but if I can't then I'll give anyone my idea if they want it (and are willing to make it a nice little game).

The title as of now is Smile!
Title: Re:February MAGS Competition
Post by: on Sun 01/02/2004 21:58:54
You can interpert zombies in any way you want.
and you can interpert blood in any way you want.
So you can do a comedy game.
And green blood is also blood. :D

Is it alright if me and LGM do a co-op game. I would do the art and music and he would do scripting and dialogue. I dont see why we would work any faster, if anything we would go slower. Is this ok?

I don't care how your work.
I just won't to see a lot's of games in this Competition.

Keep up the good work.

As for February being such a short month I will need all games in by 23rd
Title: Re:February MAGS Competition
Post by: Ginny on Mon 02/02/2004 12:28:07
hmm, isn't this a leap year? wither way, I think its still enough time from, say 25th to 28th or 29th to votre (normal months have 30 or 31 days, that is only 3 or 4 days for voting, which isnt much different from 25th to 28th).
Anyway I dont really mind cause I'm making something short, but just wanted to point this out. :)

edit: I think Ill challenge myself with a low resolution and pallete (first time) in this game, and use it to try out stuff. :)

Current (official?) working title: The Ressurector.

Also, it didnt turn out as short as I had planned (I guess I can have visionary ideas with any topic, hehe), but if my calculatins are correct I have enough time. It wont be very gruesome but there is ebough blood in my plan to satisfy you, I hope ;).

Hmm... this was going to be my first MAGS competition, but I'm already working on a Zombie game! I don't really want to work on two Zombie games, so I guess I'll just wait 'til next month.
Title: Re:February MAGS Competition
Post by: ScottDoom on Tue 03/02/2004 04:27:48
Well, I've started to work on my game that I currently call Smile! I'm pretty sure that'll be the final title, but I might change it.

Here's the story:
In 2008, a deadly virus emerges on Earth and sweeps through the whole of Earth. The virus poisons its host, and turns them into Zombies. The inhabitants of Ags, a far away planet, have been in a secret "agreement" with the governments of Earth in which Ags extracts raw materials from Earth while promising not to harm the humans. Due to the Zombification of the humans the "agreement" is now void, and the inhabitants of Ags are preparing to invade Earth and eradicate the Zombies and claim Earth.

You play as Mann.
Mann is an inhabitant of Ags, and his (and your) mission is to establish a secure landing base for your people, and kill any Zombies you come across. However, you discover something about these Zombies...

Although the story is rather deep, the gameplay will be very short. I'm still working on designing puzzles. I'm actually having a hard time with. I'm guessing there will probably be about 5 or 6 rooms total though. The game will give a very nice message, but I don't want to ruin it.

All my walk animations end up looking like some undead stumbler thingy, so a zombie game is perfect! Count me in (assuming that I can finish this one, although I should be able to)

I will upload more pics.

We are Max, an AGSer who had been working on a game. He decides to go for a walk after uploading his new game. But he sees that everyone has became zombies.
BTW I will ask something: We can introduce our games in "Completed Games Announcement", don't we?
Title: Re:February MAGS Competition
Post by: Ginny on Wed 04/02/2004 16:13:13
Wow, people have made progress :P

Im gonna leave my yet unfinished GUI alone now and start on the main character. So far what I've planned is motivating me, but I dunno if Ill be able to implement it perfectly in time, so either Ill release the game later or release it undetailed and then update.

Anyway, "The Resurrector" is now the official title, and here is a short description of the game's story:

A dark being named The Resurrector has zombified most of the people in the land, and terror is at loose...

Umm, well thats all I can reveal Im afraid. Ill finish the main character and you should know more then. :P
Title: Re:February MAGS Competition
Post by: Duck on Thu 05/02/2004 00:47:43
Well, I'm finished my character art and such, so here's the backstory:

Around the year 2015, a huge, horrible epedemic disease swept through humanity. Those who were not infected were immunized, and those that managed to survive for a couple of days were given a new medicine. However, both of the substances had the unfortunate and unforeseen side effect of turning everyone who took it into zombies five years later.

EDIT: As you may expect, it won't be a particularly serious game.

That's no excuse not to enter, I don't think anyone enters to win???? It's all about having fun creating a game to fit the rules. And just remember, for 20 people that say they'll enter, there is usually 3 people that actually do. Don't be put off, just give it a go.

Escape From The Zombie City Status
*It is an action-adventure game which we must kill the zombies before they kill us. I've done the script of killing zombies, but they can't kill us yet :(
http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=6;action=display;threadid=11666
*There will be witties about AGS games, and forum members (of course about me and my games, too
*But I don't think my game will be the winner of the competition. And I'm very slow, it may be not finished till the last day. :(
EDIT: I forgot to say:
*The game has 2 endings. They will change as how you played.
*You can change the cursor mode to "shoot" with the space key, so you don't have to search it with the right mouse button when a zombie is coming towards you.

General plotline: In a quiet English countryside in 1813, a young woman finds her village has been deserted... and finds

Wow! That was superb! I loved the characterisation that the asides and the dialog portraits give to the story.
Everything worked beautifully too.
Excellent game.

Gord:
The archive seems to be corrupt? Anyway I tried to get it a couple of times and it only downloaded .99Mb, rather than the 5Mb reported in the zip.

PS - EMc: Massive nit-pick: the main menu buttons should trigger on all the cursor modes really.

Just a note to new and old and special MAGS participants: Please always post a link to your entry in the MAGS thread, too. Some miss to do this. Thanks.

Now when will the voting start? Let's say in 9 hours from now (see timestamp of this post)!

So we better use the second way that I suggested. This means the doors for submissions will close in about 17 hours from now (see timestamp of this message). Enough time for everyone all over the world :)

Here's my unfinished...err... demo game !
Dorcan's zombie game demo (http://www.digitalmindstudio.ch/fichiers.php?id=8&action=download)

Be warned, there aren't any puzzles. I simply hadn't enough time and motivation, and I'm also very tired now ::)
So I hope you will enjoy the intro, as I had fun making it :P (I found the musics on internet)

Btw, here's a little animation I made for the game, but I didn't include it for the moment, so I'll just show it. That's my main character, a clown who has lost his smile :

Congrats ElaineMc, it's a great game & definately the best one this month, It's the only one I haven't quite finished yet & didn't get a chance to vote as I didn't realise it would be announced so soon (& I hadn't finished your game), but as it turned out you didn't need my vote anyway.

I'd like to see what you can come up with when you're not limited to a month.

Spoiler
I haven't posted in your thread yet cause I'm scared I might read a spoiler, the only small thing I noticed was in the Manse, up stairs to the right, in that screen the walkable area goes too far to the right and you can walk into the black area beyond the screen, very minor

Congratulations ElaineMC! I look forward to the rules next month. :)

The only thing that slightly bothered me was the scaling of Felicia - in some of the screens she looks like a small violet square ;). The dialog faces were absolutely stunning, and added an inconcievable amount of personality to the characters. Wonderful!

Timosity: Thanks for the note-- I've got a running list of revisions that need to be made, and when I get a spare afternoon, I plan to correct things like this. Glad you enjoyed the game!

GinnyW: I agree-- she didn't translate as well to a smaller size as I would've liked. At about 45 pixels high, there just wasn't much I could do with her.

If I do a second chapter, I'll use a larger sprite-- and initial testing shows that this version works much better when reduced in size. On the left, the revised Felicia; to the right, revised Future Felicia (show at 2x the actual size).

I've used the dialog views very successfully in kamishibai (http://otakuworld.com/shibai/index.html?/shibai/pages/HideAndSeek.html) stories (http://otakuworld.com/shibai/pages/NorahSerrano.html) before now, and they really can add a lot. Just about everything I use in AGS graphics, I've learned from doing kami games, in fact.

Creed: Thank you again. :)
