Tricky, clever, and insightful riddles can be fun to ponder over, and be a nice element to adventure games even. Continuing with last competitions poetry theme, I'd like to see some poems that contain some original riddles (with/without answers).
Here's an example:
"This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down."
-J.R.R. Tolkien
Rules:
1. Poem can be of any form and length.
2. The poem must contain a riddle.
3. Deadline June 19th.
Hopefully this isn't too difficult, and some of you will step forth and accept the challenge. :)
What is that thing
that gives us life
that lets us eat
that burns our skin
and heats us
Nice. An easy answer I believe. Anyone else wanna try?
I just came up with this:
Let now break loose the hellish fire!
It will just feed this lord's desire!
The clouds have been his place of birth,
his death the ocean, lake or girth;
His carriage: it's the thunderstorm,
the wind in every shape and form
You won't escape! To end his reign:
You must now shout his well-known name!
Be Gone, Be Gone!
I like it. Maybe we can get a few more entries in over the weekend before it closes. :D
I might try to get one in.
Delicious I be!
Your tummy you'll find me.
So very yellow and crunchy.
Flavor chili or honey.
Maybbbeee.
Last day to submit something. Voting will start tomorrow!
Alright, we've got three great entries...Let the voting commence!
I vote for NsMn
NsMn
Deu2000. The answer is clearly jalapenos. There can be no life without them. At least not a life I would want to live.
Last day for voting!
NsMn wins! Congratulations! I guess you can start the next writing competition when you're ready.
Is NsMn going to start a new contest soon? Or are we done with the fortnightly writing thingie?
I'm too late to the party, but I just wrote a riddle and this is a good a place as any to share it.
You need me.
I keep your picture with me all the time.
I have a chip on my shoulder
but you love to dress me in leather.
and you can't leave without me.
What am I?
My wallet?

My wallet?
Good, but not what I had in mind :-)
It remembers me of a little card with a pic and chip added, that I am used to take with me. (http://g.picoodle.com/3301kx36.jpg) (http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/12962/10.gif)
Just as close, but equally not what I have in mind. Pay closer attention to the last clue of the riddle.
A PASSPORT!
(If I'm right, this is what I feel like:)

What an odd feeling to have. Personally, I'd rather feel like this:

Man, I miss the old, sexy version of Batman. Dark and gritty Batman never finds time for threesomes. :=
Well, I'd always be up for feeling Yvonne Craig. But solving the Riddler's riddles was the only reason Adam West kept Burt Ward around!
RIDDLE THE BED!!
You got it Eric :-)
The Gimp works too.

So does Eric start the new writing competition since the last guy has apparently forgotten all about it?
Heeeey â€" that riddle is not fair! (http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/12962/weigern.gif)

I did, I did!
A and since I leave the house without the passport but not without the creditcard ...
and not to forget: I don't have a passport with a chip (http://www.esemann.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/personalausweis.gif) (http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/12962/innocent.gif)
So I only could give the creditcard a go (http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/12962/aufregen.gif)
... and I won't confess, that we do have passports with a chip since November 2010 over here (so my next one will be like this, too) (http://s7.directupload.net/images/user/120107/lbzsgb6i.gif)â€" NEVER
Well, seeing as how I wrote nothing, and Stupot+ wrote a riddle, I think the honor should go to him/her/it. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to look at more pictures of Yvonne Craig.
Stupot+ it is! Take it away, Mr. + ;-D
Oh gee, oh boy, you guys are kind!
I'll start a new one in due course :)
Sorry NsMn.
@Tabata - Sorry Tabs, I stick to my guns. You can leave the house without a passport, but you can't leave the country (or can you in within the EU?) :P

Yes, of course I can ! (http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/12962/grmbl.gif)
Spoiler
If I want to visit Arj0n, at the border there are just some signs reminding me entering the Netherlands (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f6/Grenz%C3%BCbergang_Elten_Niederlande.JPG). There's noone who wants to see my passport.
And if you don't use the highway, the signs are sometimes that easy to miss, you don't even realize it at first (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0c/GrenzeAachenVaalsRoteLinie.JPG/800px-GrenzeAachenVaalsRoteLinie.JPG)
My english isn't good enough to explain it exactly, but it's based on the Schengen agreement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement)
But there is an obligation to provide positive identification (in case of a control by police, customs and such) so you did it well  - I just loooove teasing (laugh)
