Title: From concept art to functional character (voting open)
Post by: Hollister Man on Sun 09/05/2004 17:43:50
Now, not everyone knows, but a group, including Blusoft, is working diligently on an extention of the original two Demo Quest games.Ã,  In the spirit of community involvement, and because we're trying to capture the AGS community's eclectic art style, we're asking for help on this guy.Ã,

This character will be the "Administrator" of the Forums, where the avatars live when they're not here.Ã,  Anyway, you know where this is going, this character will be analagous to CJ/Pumaman.Ã,  In the game, he is the "ruler", but also entrapped by his status and never allowed to leave his throne.Ã,  If anyone wants to include it, the throne is some sort of chair-desk combo, possibly gold and including ankle shackles.

Here's the concept art RickJ gave me before his absence,
http://www.gaia-spa.com/project/demo/Home/RickJ/king1.jpg

This area of the game will be in 256 color, 320x200.Ã,  Don't worry too much about the palette, just don't go overboard.Ã,  We'll probably need "sitting typing," "sitting talking," "standing up," and "standing talking."Ã,  Of course, when "he's" complete, post animated gifs, a tiled PNG, or even a .cha file if you're feeling nice. ;)

Like Andail's thread, we'll archive all of the characters when the activity is done.Ã,  Unlike said thread, we'll have a vote at the end of the competetion.Ã,  Good luck!

EDIT
Deadline extended

so you're having an activity to try get somebody to make your character for you, or have i misunderstood?

Boyd, that is correct, but he is also presenting an opportunity for people to train their sprite drawing techniques, and to compare with other people.

Given, of course, that people participate.

If I had the time, I would certainly take this chance to see how I would do in this competition.

yeah, but this is going in for the demo game. one that all of us will download, or at least all the new people will. i think its a perfectly legit competition

When I first saw the image I thought it was crappy for this competition, but as much I look at it, most I think it's perfect, it has more room for imagination, whereas with Andail's concept many of us focused in coloring...

So, don't complain, if you don't like the image, or do you think Hollinster is abbusing, just don't post...

My two cents...

Believe me, I would NEVER think of using this for a personal project, but thought it would be a good activity, as Andail said.Ã,  As usual, I get elected to be the art director because of a few cheezy BGs. lolÃ,  In fact, if anyone wants to contribute...pretty much anything, we'll try to incorporate it.

The "concept" is kinda crappy, but that's why its interesting.Ã,  It doesn't even really have to use the concept at all, if you have a better idea.

I will possibly just remove the ending date, until the point when the Forum backgrounds are ready.

I'll post my version of him tonight, if I can.

PS:  Believe me, even the old pros will want to DL the new Demo, which it will be in name only.  We have three acts planned, as well as a whole slew of new rooms and features.  ;)

I don't care.  Me and my Wacom are entering anyway.

Here is the finished version!!

Only entry so far...  This is the highest ranking I have ever had in a an competition! activity!  :)

OK, so you can't really use him in a game, but still...

Mmmm... The only problem is that this is not a competition, "just" an activity...  :-\

Hey, at least someone tried. :D  I almost had given up.  Characters are hard to do.

Farlander, Hollister said it would be a vote in the end, so it's actually a competition. - Although the lack of contributions might change that.

Darth, that's superb!
Some of the shadows look photo-realistic, and still it's a very low amount of colours

Great work, although the concept art was not intended quite that literally.  :)  I was thinking of the same kinda costume on a computer-programming white dude, (I assume CJ is caucasian, but I'm honestly not sure.)  And I think he might be a bit big for the game, but I don't care, that sprite is awesome!

this was a nice opportunity to get away from the mundanity of my own project for a while, so i gave myself half an hour to draw something for your competition. this is the best i could come up with in that time. if the competition allows it, i'll complete it once i've got the time. if not, then just take that genetic freak as he is.Ã,  :P

Strangely enough, I actually like the N00b's a lot!  Good work, although he's again not quite what I had in mind. Ah the issues of delegation, heh?

Thought I'd give it a go. The end result is actually better than anything else I've ever drawn at 3 o'clock in the morning, so I thought I'd post it..

There are a couple of fuzzy spots on it cuz JPEG'ing it screwed up the coloration a bit.

I didn't notice this contest until last night, so this is a little rushed. :)

I think it turned out pretty well... can't compete with the others, though.

Everyone who entered did great.  I like the one by Mr. Toad the best (simplicity)  As I said, everyone did a great job.  Its voting time, more or less, what does everyone else think?

I like the one of pixelcat the most, but I can't tell you why. I just like it. But the other ones are also great.

Darths or PIxelcats. both superb pieces of art.

I also like Pixelcat's better, though Darth's is still very nice.

Pixel cat and Darth both did an excellent job, bit I really don't think that they could be animated neatly in a 256 color game.  They're both kinda exactly like the photo, though very well done.

My question is, do they represent the 'administrator' well?  CJ isn't a buff black dude, and although that was the concept art, the costume was more of the concept.  That's why I prefer Mr. Toad's.

Darth!  You rock!  :o

By the way, if anyone sees PenguinX around, let me know, he's got my new player animations. :)
