You're the lead computer artist in your game company. The concept artist has just sent you his newest sketch. Now it's up to you to make something useful out of it.
Basically you may change it however you like, alter the style or remove parts. Just colour it or make a brand new piece of art.
The concept sketch for these two weeks is:
http://esseb.com/andail/concept.jpg (http://esseb.com/andail/concept.jpg)
Deadline: End of April
That competition idea seems cool, but can we have a whiter version of the sketch please?
I don't see the problem, Vel, as the wiser way to make what Petter demmands should be using that painiting as the basic layer and go on over that... the darkness is no problem, and you cann allways make it brighter with your Painting program...
I am going to participate!
There ya go, Andail... just cranked up brightness and contrast.
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/whiterconcept.jpg (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/whiterconcept.jpg)
Ok, as I said, it's up to you what to do with it...
Usually when colouring a piece it can be handy to have some sort of soft underlying hue to easier apply highlights and shadows afterwards, and to make sure no area has those annoying white glitches. Not necessarily as dark as mine was, though,
Thanks ElectricMonk, though, for showing your version.
I may give it a go(if you remember Andail, i once coloured one of your sketches?) time permitting
Erm, I meant "Here you go, Vel", not Andail. It wasn't meant to be a "version" as such...

Migs, that's just teh greatest :o!!11
(Isn't that the town from Tulle's world 3?)
im gonna geve this one a go i think ;D
I must say I have to give Migs props for his fast response time. With a colorizer like Migs on your team, you'll have a full-length adventure game done in no time. None of this dawdling business and slaving over drawings pixel-by-pixel.
It's always good to see what industry calls, "a quick start."
Hats off to you, Migs.
this is a thread ment for the competition, please don't take it too off topic
i'm working on one but i don't know how i'm gonna do it...
we'll see
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/mi5concept.jpg
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/mi5concept2.jpg
can anyone guess what style i was going in. it shouldnt be hard, although I did leave out a key thing in the sky that would give it away.
This is more like a preview of colors then a functional background, so I will take this another step if I have time.
Also guys, could you please LINK to your images, instead of posting them in the thread. It's hell on us dialup users.
Here's mine:
1st version (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Damien_C.PNG)
This is the unfinished version without rock texture, etc.
Sorry for not puting it in a link, but It's only 13kb anyway.
Very well done so far, guys!
It's nice to see the progress of the images, it's after all an educational activity and not primarilly a contest. I hope to see many step-by-step tutorials afterwards :)
1st version (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Damien_C.PNG)
2nd version (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Damien_CV2.PNG)
And here is the final version:

BTW: Made with mspaint & IrfanView
Click! (http://img30.photobucket.com/albums/v89/smind/andailbg.gif)
Colored in Paint Shop Pro.. Background layer is plain white, colors are on another layer, and the outline is in a layer on top of that with a multiply blending mode..
Ben,
Yours was AMAZING!! It looks great.
Nice Job.
Wow, I really like everyone's work so far. I decided to give this a go. This isn't finished, but I figured I'd share my progress.

Blackthorne
Nice Job Ben ;D looks like concept art for a game
Looking good so far BlackThorne, cant wait for the final version.
This is really good how everyone has coloured the original in their own stlye, each one different.
Personally, I prefer the cartoon style like Damiens.
Wow, I'd vote for Damiens one.
Rock on, Ben! That's fantastic! Totally rockin.
I like the watercolor look in Blackthorne's image. Waiting to see the finished product.
no way as awesome as Bens but I'm happy with it :)

Are you allowed to redraw the background in a diff style and then color it?
QuoteBasically you may change it however you like, alter the style or remove parts. Just colour it or make a brand new piece of art.
I guess so.

Absolutely. Concept art hardly ever survives intact.
For a start, the dimensions of this piece are all wrong for a game.
It's probably too sketchy for most games.
Etc.
Damien your background is sooo awesome! It should be the winner already, i.m.o. !!
Could you explain the dimension issue further, Steve McCrea? I'm just curious because I think the image would serve pretty well as an entrance screen to the town. You get a good overall view of the town and you know where you're coming from.
However, I think this was used more than just as an entrance screen in Tulle's World but I might be wrong.
Anyway, I don't see what's all wrong about it.

Did I say there was a winner? I think it would be hard; all contributions so far have been great, and as the resident educationalist, I would like to see a competition-free thread for once.
And SteveMcCrea...those were some big words :) Perhaps you meant it doesn't look like an ordinary, conventional room? Well all scenes in a game can't be square rooms seen straight from the front.
Cause if you take a look at Ben's version, which is one of the best backgrounds I've seen in a good while, I can tell you right now that it will work darn well for a game :)
Pessi:
This will probably be an entrance scene. However you - and I think it was inkoddi - were right in a way; a similar scene was used in tw3, and it still features the same town.
Don't get me wrong - I like the sketch.
All I meant was that it's not 320x200 or 640x400!
You can put down those weapons now :)
I think it would make an awesome MI2-town-style room if extended to the right...
Andail is right, we don't need to turn this into a contest.
We can just participate, do mini tutorials and the such and eventually improve our art.
Steve, ok, no problem :)
Still, the dimensions would work great if the background scrolled a little when the player came from the bottom edge walking upwards, wouldn't they?
Yup!
In that case I'd probably extend the pic down even further so that the town wasn't visible at all before the scroll. Just to add to that "reveal" feeling.
I was trying to encourage something other than paintovers. Not that the paintovers in this thread aren't great, but I'd like to see some interpretations! Anyway, I'll bugger off now. It's not my competition and I don't have time to compete. :)
Cheers,
Steve
Thanks for the positive feedback.
I agree with Andail and Privateer, this shouldn't be a competition, but a way to improve ourselfs and if someone makes a tutorial along the way, even better.
Okay, here's version 2 of my background.
I know, everyone's going to want a tutorial for this. I promise I'll make one soon.
Version 2 (http://www.angelfire.com/alt2/music8/whiterconceptv2.jpg)
Okay Migs, if i get sued by Donald Trump it's your fault.
But, You're Fired. :)
sorry.
I'm [very slowly] working on this when I get the chance ...
I'm not sure I'll have time to finish it before this topic goes the way of the dodo so I thought I'd post an WiP shot:
Image removed ... see my next post
I hope I can finish this.
Mmmm... DarthMandarbish... mmmmmm... I hope to work with this guy some day... :)
Me too, eh Darth? ;)
It looks great, Darth!
I highly enjoy seeing the different styles people have displayed here....this makes me proud being an AGS patron!
Here's the latest iteration of my background..... probably one more pass on some detail work, and I'll be done. But I'll tell you, I've had fun doing this.

That's quite awesome. The wall in particular is great.
Mandarb,
You suck! Hehe. It looks awesome.....really cool.
Bt
Very kickass, Darth ;) . I like the colors. The gray buildings against the brioght grass and sky make it looks like a creepy deserted town. And the trees look great..
I'll borrow Remixor's avatar here, because it seems appropriate:
i'm angry.... i can't figure out how to do the grassy bank... i've attempted and reattempted it over and over again and it always looks like teh p00... so sadly i may end up cropping it which would mean getting rid of the water....argh!
Bummer, Mr C!
Just remember this isn't a competition, so you could just show us what you've got so far.
- And be remembered forever as a quitter.
But hey.
Moreover, I think it's just a concept art for reference, you don't need to follow exactly the original details, so Mr. C., that means you can make it without the grass actually.
Andail, Right?
but but but.... i want to be awesome and draw the whole thing!!
WAAAAAAAAA
Why? You can change details or even draw more.
Like, for example, change all the grass to iron needles.
I made one Achtung Franz style:
I thought I'd put the mailman in there too to balance the whole thing.
/me giggles
good work
/me giggles too!
Yay that's what you'll see of Andail's bg in AF!
That's a very profound interpretation, Ghormak, I can cearly discern the allusion to the contemporary discourse of dialectical materialism.
If this was a competition, the other contributions would hardly stand a chance against such a master-piece.
Here it is my unfinished attempt :(
I know that the deadline is far, but I have grades and I know that I won't (I shouldn't) put much effort, so... I post this for you to figure how does Petter's image in a "goofy" plain colors style.
I did this in one hour of work, the following to Petter's first post... when I see it I have a feeling shame for not finishing it. :'(
looks promising, Nachos, but that kind of technique gains so much from being complete...it would be great to see it finished.
But since you have done the outlining, perhaps someone else could pick it up where you left it?
Here is my extremely late entry, done entirely in Haddas style!
I prefer to think of it as 'stylized'.
Here's my try:
I used Photoshop CS and it took a couple of hours. Basically I tried not to concentrate on details but on the big picture. Didn't succeed so well in the perspective as it's not very calming to look at. Looks like the buildings were on downhill. Oh well, it was good practice.
By the way, Eric, when will you get yours finished? I can't wait. :)
Here are some progress shots.

That's great Pessi! I need to learn how to colour with my wacom and your progress shots will help, block in the main colours first and all that...
I don't think I can finish... I'll just crop it for now and post it... stupid grass!!! RRRRRR!!
bah... I kinda lost interest in it because I'm silly and whatnot...
I like the buildings but the windows suck and SHUT UP GRASS! I HATE YOU!
ah well!

Eric For President!
Well, Eric, I like how you turned the grass into a velvet cloth sprinkled with glitter.
Just kidding! The houses are awesome, well done!
Your entries are however not greater than mine or ghormaks
Wow!!!
Eric, yours is truly magnifficent!
Would you happen to have a hi-res version?
that's as high as she goes
i started at the same size as andail's sketch but it was too much work so shrunk it
I was just considering on entering.. And then I saw your post Eric.. You really are the r0x0r..
In the words of Esseb: "eric's better than me."
But I think I'll enter anyways.. Cause I need practice.
awe damn! in my haste to post it i messed it up
the green trees in the background are just flat green and they kinda stop at the tower with the hook...
oh well

yeah, and one of your trees has a chimney eric. Hang your head in shame >:(
BEST "FROM CONCEPT ART TO FUNCTIONAL BACKROUND" EVAH!!
Wow, I gotta work in this thread, but not now...lol...My problem is composition, making good looking background layouts before the "pixel art" ever really begins.
EDIT----
Now someone should make eric's BG animated! Great work (I'd just spray paint the grass with a scatter brush in photosoap with the saturation and brightness randomized, then lighten and darken areas as you see fit.)
actually, the deadline was the end of april, so...
of course everybody can still have a go at the sketch, but this thread isn't needed anymore, since I'm gonna make a gallery of the bg:s we've got so far.
Thank you for a very interesting and well performed activity :)
