Title: Hourgame Compo - 14th November
Post by: NsMn on Fri 13/11/2009 13:19:48
Hourgame Saturday again!

The purpose of Hourgame Saturday is, to encourage the amateur game-making, or to put it bluntly, to make you tear your ass off your chair and finally make something.
In this activity your task is to make an AGS game within a strict and a very short deadline (i.e. one hour).

Timeline:
The event takes place every (surely hope so) Saturday, starting at 7:00 pm GMT, when the theme is revealed on the IRC and in this thread. The participants then have one hour to make their entries and 15 more minutes for uploading. In brief: the deadline for entries is 8:15 pm.
Then the voting takes place till the Monday Morning.

Basic rules:
- Participants can join IRC for rules and updates (how do I join IRC? (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/acirc.htm)), but every information will be posted here too, so it's your choice.
- The theme is set by the previous week's winner and by the contest's host in event of his/her absence.
- While it is not forbidden for the theme-setters to participate in the activity, their games cannot be voted for (to prevent accusations of cheating and to discourage regular participation).
- Instead, theme-setters are encouraged to draw trophies for the contest's winners.
- Making your game from scratch is strongly encouraged, though it is not forbidden to use music or artwork from public sources if you are allowed to (e.g. using public domain music tracks in your game is OK, but not really necessary). It is also possible to use a pre-existent AGS template for your game (e.g. that Verb-Coin GUI template).
- You cannot use the stuff you've made earlier, because this competition is about making something new.

Uploading:
Suggested hosts to upload your entry to are:
- http://www.mediafire.com/ (http://www.mediafire.com/)
- http://www.sendspace.com/ (http://www.sendspace.com/)
- http://www.rapidshare.com/ (http://www.rapidshare.com/)
- Or your own place.

Voting:
Just tell us your favourite game (and possibly a couple of less favourite ones), and hopefully someone will do the counting.

Important: please post here if you'd like to join but the timeline is not ok for you! Slight changes are always possible!

Hmmm, it's a tie in my head. I liked Bicilotti's style more, but I appreciated that Bulbapuck put in some classic puzzle solving. Both had interesting premises...

In the end, though, I'm leaning more towards Bicilotti.

Well I liked them both but I think if I had to choose I would go with Bicilotti since some interesting coding must have gone into it.  Congrats to both though for keeping the HG alive :)

I didn't have a clue what the stuff was in Bulbapuck's game so I think I'll vote for Bicilotti's frustrating game.

Hahaha these were both great! Hourgames with actual puzzles  :o ???

Votes must be cast, however, and Bicilotti's actually made me really laugh (at the "QUICK! SHOOT THE CIRCLES BIT" that I totally wasn't expecting) and also must be the hourgame that took me the longest to complete out of all that I've played!

So! My vote goes to: Bicilotti!

Nice work, both of you  :D

And I third the OHHHHHH YEAAAAAHHHHHHHHH  8)

Oh, also, downloading from Terran's site was much nicer than all these megauploads and all that rubbish. Perhaps we could make it the official upload site or something (With Terran's permission, of course?)

I dunno - i liked both of these.

I think Bulbapuck's game fit the theme better.  I mean it was about two toys coming to life.  But i can see how Bicilotti's game is meant to be a giant interactive toy thing too ... and to be honest I think i did enjoy playing Bicilotti's game better. It was random and entertaining.

I think if Bulbapuck would've been able to do a little more with his game then he would get this one ... but ... i'm giving my vote to Bicilotti

Good job to both ofyou.

THE VOTING IS OVER.

...and the winner is obvious! Bici, it's your turn again.

I bet you were waiting for my hourgame.

For some strange reason it ended up looking weirdly similar to that of Bicilotti.

KillMeNowPlease (http://www.mediafire.com/?zrnjzdvmzfk)

Not an entry, obviously, but still worth downloading.

Thanks thanks, lobbying for the hourgames thread worked! :P

It has been a great competition and I've enjoyed both games (a pity FSi didn't manage to upload his before the deadline).

Bulbapuck's Toy Tale: I've enjoyed it a lot. The intro (especially the dialogue) is hilarious and I immediately empatised with the poor non living toy. Other nice bits were: non obvious puzzles, whacky walking animation and a transparent cornea.
The only minus is that several items (especially inv. ones) are lacking "look" interaction.

FSi's KillMeNowPlease: it's very similar to my idea, just with a lot more / a lot better / a tad more frustrating gameplay. It also manages to capture the spirit of the theme without being a game addressed to children. A hint for everyone stuck at the "blue lava pit"
Spoiler
you can do it if you "run" on the platform before jumping. You know, to acquire speed.

Great week for HGs, I hope to see even more / better games next Saturday!
