!Hourgame saturday!
I, as a host of this new competition, won't be original and just cite the rules given before:
It's 2010 and Hourgaming is back!
What's an hourgame competition?
The purpose of Hourgame Saturday is, to encourage the amateur game-making, or to put it bluntly, to make you tear your ass off your chair and finally make something.
In this activity your task is to make an AGS game within a strict and a very short deadline (i.e. one hour).
When will it take place?
This hourgame session will take place on Feb 13, 2010, Saturday (what a coincidence!). It will start at 19:00GMT and participants will have an hour to make their games + 15 minutes to beta test / upload (i.e. deadline is 20:15GMT).
The time has been tested by several competitions already, so I think, it is generally suitable. If not, see below.
How do I participate?
A theme is set by the previous week's winner and by the contest's host in event of his/her absence. It will be annouced on IRC* and here.
Additional infos
- While it is not forbidden for the theme-setters to participate in the activity, their games cannot be voted for (to prevent accusations of cheating and to discourage regular participation).
- Instead, theme-setters are encouraged to draw trophies for the contest's winners.
- Making your game from scratch is strongly encouraged, though it is not forbidden to use music or artwork from public sources if you are allowed to (e.g. using public domain music tracks in your game is OK, but not really necessary). It is also possible to use a pre-existent AGS template for your game (e.g. that Verb-Coin GUI template).
- You cannot use the stuff you've made earlier, because this competition is about making something new.
Uploading:
Suggested hosts to upload your entry to are:
- TerranRich's ShutUpload
- http://www.mediafire.com/
- Or your own place.
Voting:
Just tell us your favourite game (and possibly a couple of less favourite ones), and hopefully someone will do the counting.
Important: please post here if you'd like to join but the timeline is not ok for you! Slight changes are always possible!
* Is there anybody willing to help me announce the theme in IRC? :)
And, please, post if you're interested in taking place in this activity. Just to see the possible turnout...
...and overall interest. :)
There will be trophies this time, I promise!
HERE! HERE!
Posting :P I'm in!
Totally join!

Oh well, you convinced me :)
I'm declaring interest!
Ho.
Unfortunately, I won't be available tomorrow for the competition. (Crowd goes 'Awwwwwwwww!')
I will try to check out the games, though. :)

Please, try :)
The previous competition definitely lacked peer comments. ;)
Roughly half an hour to start.
Edited: Okay, check for new post!
*Still looks like I need some assistance to announce the theme in IRC. For some reason my computer prevents me from connecting the server.
Bad, very bad. I think the point is to make a new post so that the participants can see it just by looking at the index.
Okay, again, I won't be original :)
The theme is...
V for Valentine!
Valentine is a keyword this time: it should be by all means used in your game (at least in the title).
If somebody succeeds to convey the mood of the coming St.Valentine's Day - it will be very good ;)
And, yes...
Ready!
Steady!
GO!!!
The hour has come to the end... Now is a quarter-hour testing/debugging session.
Post your entries!

Of course, you can. In fact, I suppose, anything made within 2 hours limit is still an hourgame... but don't count it as an excuse! :)
You have time to upload till 20.30!

Thank you very much!
So, voting has begun.
In the morning I'll post the link to the whole package, and decide the trophy.
Voting is open till 'round Tuesday, so help yourself to games, please! :-)
Well, vote time!
Steve McCrea Massacre: very enjoyable game! I especially liked the graphics choice and the dialogue with the policeman :P Not too hard, not too easy, solid production.
Wyz's Cup-o-Valentine: one of the most refined depiction ever seen of a blue cup :P. It is very good on graphics but lacks a bit of sharpness: gameplay is quite light (there's not a "real" puzzle) and same goes for dialogues. It's difficult to make good graphics and a game in one hour though, so this one is a worthy effort!
Bulbapuck's Present for Valentine's: simple and cute graphics, talk and walk animations, brilliant dialogues, many response, effective characters and two endings! The things that bugger me are the misplaced cursor's hotspot (which adds some frustration) and the lack of responses when looking at an inventory item (strikes me, because hotspots & character have one). And Bulbapuck managed to stuff all that in just one hour (or a bit more)!
Magma42's heart attack: the longest hourgame I've ever played, with 3 backgrounds, 3 puzzles, many inventory objects (some of wich where... translucent :P). I was a bit puzzled by some items (nuclear shoe?) but in the end it was not too difficult to get to the desired solution. It was also the only game not to use a Valentine's cliche, so yay for it!
My vote goes to Bulbapuck!
edit: dualnames and FSi, what happened to you?
Kweepa - The art is okay, dont know what the point of the cop and the storekeeper are if they don't affect the game. Not sure if its a bug but, if I buy the card and the flowers, why do I only give her the card?
Wyz - Like the graphics, but very short, kept thinking I was supposed to move the lamp to the other side of the desk, should have known I had to talk to the telephone I suppose.
bici - Like the idea of a minigame, but the point wasn't really explained very well. plus the random movement is kinda cheap, I dunno.
Bulba - Best Art, multiple endings, more interactions. Cursor hotspots a bit bugged I think, but otherwise great.
I vote Bulba

Spoiler
Cop: try leaving the house without clicking on the clothes.
Storekeeper: no point really. I drew the backgrounds first. If I had time I might have worked her into the game better.
Bug: Try that with your girlfriend, and see if you get credit for the flowers. :=
I took this contest as a chance to test a template I'm working on, and need to say the blue cup is part of it. I don't like to cheat, just had fun, so if someon has problems with this, I will withdraw from the contest.
SteveMcCrea:
Nice little game, I had to do some backtracking, but that was actually funny. :D
Bicilotti:
I like the looks of this mini game, but did not really get the hang of it.
Bulbapuck:
Backgrounds, animating characters, dialogues and two endings, in just one hour, its like magic. :D
Magma42:
A hour game with more then one room is rare, puzzles were a bit weird, but not impossible.
I'm going to vote for Bulbapuck.
Not a valid entry
I've tried to work on this to catch the one hour limit, but it was rather impossible..
Anyway, here's of what would have been my entry:

Really good participance here: 5 entries + 1 bonus :)
The trophy is almost ready, and I almost foresee who will get it ;)
I go for McCrea :D
very solid games overall ;)
thanks
My vote herewith goes to bicilotti,
because I love minigames. And it had Ragtime music!!
I vote Bulbapuck. Because fish is sexy.
Ok. I finally decided who to vote for. It was an incredibly hard decition though, awesome games guys :D
Kweepa - A very fun idea, which was executed really well. I was highly entertained
Wyz - This game is absolutely beautiful, for an hourgame the graphics were really awesome.
Bici - I will never get how you can script like that for an hourgame :P Awesome as always, but maybe a bit too easy?
Magma - This game is BIG for being an hourgame. Nice graphics and several puzzles made this game great. This is a definate improvement from your last hourgame, good job!
My vote goes to SteveMcCrea.
This competition produced many good games... which can be actually called "games" :)
I think, it's a good tendancy.
But due to that also, I've found it extremely difficult to vote...
So, my thoughts:
bicilotti - Valentine game
So, it is not an adventure game, but still very interesting and fun to play. And definitely wins the "Best Scripting in an hourgame" (if we had that category, of course ;) ).
Bulbapuck - Present for valentines
Very nice and polished game, I should say. I join to everyone above who metioned lots of responses (some of them very witty and fun), animation, different endings... Much effort put into an hour. Good game!
magma42 - Heart Attack
Oh my, I've met them again: the Sour Smiley and the (Nuclear) Shoe of Mass Destruction! :) I think, it becomes a tendency. I'm looking forward to seeing other games with these and whether you'll be able to blend them in any topic ;)
And also, very non-standard approach to the theme stated.
Steve McCrea - Massacre
Very nice graphics and interesting gameplay. Multiple endings, too... Reminded me somehow an IF classics, 9.05 - in fact it provokes you to restart the game several times to get all possible variants of the plot development!
Wyz - Cup-o-Valentine
Very thought-provoking story about two cups (can it be called 'a c(o)uple' in English? :) )... and good in graphics. A bit awkward in control, though.
And, my vote goes for...
Steve McCrea
Okay, now I guess, I should do the counting and announce the winner.
So, here we have:
3rd place - bicilotti, Valentine game (1 vote)
2nd place - Steve McCrea, Massacre (3 votes)
1st place (winner!) - Bulbapuck, Present for Valentines (5 votes)
Thanks everybody for good participation and solid entries!
And yes, Bulbapuck can claim his trophy:
*YAY*
Thanks for all the kind words guys :) And thanks Vukul for hosting and the trophy :).
(I can't add the trophy yet due to a lack of space, I'll add it tonight)
I hope the next one will be as awesome as this one, I think I have an idea already...
See you then ;D

edit: oh my god, I'm such an idiot, I've the text of a PM here.cognratulations to Bulbapuck, which made a really outstanding game and to all the participants, this one was crowded!

present yourself, present the award, make a sassy joke, ado, further ado, while(){cAkatosh.doAdo();}, announce the winner.
Can you handle it, dawg?
I should add that I'm planning to wait one more week to avoid collision with the AGS awards (thanks for the reminder bici, for I assume that's what you mean?)
So next one is the 6th of march, see you then!

I'm a moron, I've posted a pm in this thread.

They are usually two weeks apart, but you're in luck! The AGS-awards is sometime around the 27th. So to completely avoid collision between the hourgame and the awards, the next one will be on the 6th of march.
Unless people want it to be this weekend?
This weekend is hardcore! (I have an event to attend Sunday morning)
I'd probably enter for all the hardcoreness of it :D
Hardcore? Let's do it!
Allright! I'll start up the next one tomorrow then ;D
