Title: July MAGS
Post by: Klaus on Fri 01/07/2005 12:26:53
What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website (http://www.mags-competition.tk)

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the net month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Topic: Underwater

The game can be presented with any theme, but the following guidelines must be observed:

- The player character must be female.
- There must be at least one game sequence or room in which the player character is underwater (or in some other liquid if desired) and must swim rather than walk. It is not required that the character can drown, though that is certainly an acceptable feature.
- At least three of these inventory items / objects must be included in the game:
* Wire cutters
* An old book of any kind
* A crown
* An orrery or other model of celestial bodies (it doesn't have to be our solar system)
* A rare egg
* A wristwatch with a special function (e.g. radar, communication, turkey call, etc.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by early July 28th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

I would maybe try something small here (I even have an idea that would fit the theme) but there's the OROW competition almost at the same time. (http://koti.mbnet.fi/paapeli/shifteye.gif) So no MAGS for me this month. Nice theme though.

Seems to me these rules are specially tailored for female underwater bikini action  ;D

Even though I shouldn't make comittments and jinx myself, I think i'll try for something small...

This is an excellent topic.  I'll try to come up with something, even better if it's before the deadline  :P.

Intresting topic, only problem is that I can't draw female characters. Guess I'll have to skip this competition. :P

Hmm, yeah. I might give it a try, but I'm not sure if I have enough time, because of the modding and all. :P

Hmmm...can it be in first-person?Ã,  For some reason I've become obsessed with first-person games...what if I did one for this and the character was female--i.e. she was addressed as a female by NPCs etc--but we never actually see her (except maybe in a mirror or something).Ã,  Let me know...

EDIT: Oh, one other question--do the objects HAVE to be in the actual inventory as items, or can they just be objects in the game that the player needs to interact with.  I had another great idea for this MAGS but if I run with it, my player character will probably not be able to have an inventory...

As long as the character is female, a first person perspective should be fine. And no, the objects don't have to be inventory items. They can be fixed objects with which the player simply interacts. The orrery, for example, could be room sized and thus not obtainable.

So you have some more days for your creations.
Anyway do not hesitate to submit your entries before the final hour :)

Hi all,

I've just started this mini game right now, but I've got this week off so I'll be working on it. Is there a programmer willing to help me out? My programming skills are far too basic for what I want. PM me.

Thanks.

EDIT: No worries, I've found one. :)

We're close to "early July 28th" and still no submissions even with extended deadline... Hm.
Okay now. So be sure to submit your entries within the next 15 hours (see timestamp of this posting). Then the voting will begin.

My entry is called UNFINISHED.

First I had to thanks Erenan for the time he spend correcting my English. He did a great job.

Due to the time limit I haven't optimized the script (over 6.000 lines of global script),therefore the game may runs slow on old computers.
There are some known animation bugs in a special scene. Due to the huge script
I wasn't able to find and fix them yet.
This game uses midi music and wav sound effects. Please be sure you have both at the same volume.

Post by: The Ivy on Thu 28/07/2005 17:48:40
Okay, okay, I've got good news and bad news.Ã,

Bad news first: the game's not done.Ã,  I've got to go to work for 6 hours, and in that time my diligent and steadfast programmer, Setsuna, will be working on the technical parts of the game.Ã,

The good news is that the graphics are done (though not entirely imported), the MIDIs are done, the puzzles are done, the scripting is progressing amazingly, and the dialogs are written on scraps of paper all over my desk.Ã,  All that remains is scooping them into one big happy file and distributing it.

I won't ask you to hold the contest open any longer.Ã,  It wouldn't exactly be fair to the other people (person?) entering this contest.Ã,  I had lots of fun making the game, and it'll still be a great product.Ã,  However, I do think that the entire game could be wrapped up in a matter of hours.Ã,  I'm 90% sure I could have it by tomorrow morning.Ã,  Ã,

Powers of fate, what sayest thou?  :-\
Title: Re: July MAGS

Do we need fairness? No, we need games  ;)
I think there is no problem with delaying until tomorrow (or Saturday) because without your game there will be no vote. Your game looks so nice that it would be pity to have it not in the contest.
Title: Re: July MAGS
Post by: Klaus on Thu 28/07/2005 22:48:38
Well, of course we need fairness! Now how can we go on?

Sure with only one entry it's not that much of a competition. On the other hand we have the deadline that's already extended for some days. Now as the only participant that sent in an entry before the deadline, bluber, suggested to extend the deadline let's do it that way. A fair offer for all other game creators that only need just some more hours.

The problem is that the new contest should start on August 1st and so we have a very short time for voting - again. :( In the end the results may be not that clear then and the winner needs to be quick in setting up his/her new rules. We'll see.

Fate is on the lady's side ;) Here's yet another 24 additional hours for The Ivy. Alias, if you want to submit within that time you're also free to do so of course.

Now check the timestamp of this posting - in 24 hours the voting will finally begin.
Thanks bluber for your generous offer.

I second that motion.

Edit: Thanks for all the time you've given us to date...trust me, we're scrambling to get this done.  I've already done one all-nighter and that won't stop me from doing another.  I think my poor programmer is planning something similar.

Who'd have thought AGS could be hazardous to your health?

Be careful with your health or my generosity will turn into an attempt of your life and I will be imprisoned.

QuoteThanks bluber for your generous offer.

Play my game and you will see it was only egoism. I think we better thank you for the generosity hosting this great competition.

Our can was about 15 minutes to completion then we realize crappy AGS couldent handle WMA formats, and then we were screwed.

Have a ncie day.

You can easily convert wma to mp3. Look at http://www.wma-mp3.com/  . alltomp3 is a good choice.

Huh, you see me shocked! 24 hours passed by and no new entries  :o
So we have a winner...

Eeeh no, just kidding ;) Well, I hope bluber also allows this final extension:
The Ivy and Alias: Please post your games as soon as possible. The vote will wait for both of you but please don't let pass much more time now. Okay!?

Argh! I'm running out of NES games to beat while I wait. I've already finished Crystalis, Zelda 2, and Mario 3 twice. If I don't get some MAGS games action soon, I think I'm gonna go mad. :o

;D

Sorry guys.  I'll have to forfeit this one.  We've got a few hours to go on our game yet.

Congratulations to the winner, who deserves it doubly because of his patience!

I hope to see you all in the completed games thread not too long from now!

Cheers,

Hey Ivy, you don't really want to let this all end now that way!?
As written you still can take some more time - hours if you want/need... Of course you shouldn't post an unfinished game and I don't know how far you came up so far. But it sounds as if you're pretty close to completion.

Yeah Ivy, don't you dare to give up now! And Alias, just convert the wma files to some other format! You must get your game ready!

Or you could release it for MAGS without voice acting, which is completely unnecessary.

Especially when the competition's been held back already.

It's not worth one day's hassle?  After all the extra time you've requested, the polite thing would be to try.

Come on now, Ivy & Alias!! Klaus extended the deadline especially for you two, so it would be very unpolite not to post your games now!  :) Especially when you both are this close to completion.

Yeah, it'd be polite to at least get it done, even without voices.
Title: Re: July MAGS
Post by: Klaus on Sat 30/07/2005 19:13:05
Okay now. Let's come to an end with this.

Both said they can not present their games at the moment and this is what needs to be accepted. How sad it ever may be...
We will see both games sooner or later in the "Completed Games" section, just as The Ivy announced (I think this goes for Alias too). So the games won't get lost at all and it's just the competition that misses some entries. But that's life.

Imagine the games would be submitted now, set up in a hassle, maybe untested and "full" of unknown bugs. Sure it wouldn't be that dramatic but even some minor errors could destroy a nice game play, you know what I mean. Even with bug fixes it wouldn't be the same as to have a nice adventure game that just works and is fun.

So noone should insist on an entry. If it's ready in time it's okay, but if it takes some more time we just need to wait. At least the contest was the base for the games and who knows what both would have worked on without MAGS!?
It's on you, The Ivy and Alias, to decide if and when your games will be published. You shouldn't get in a hurry just because of the competition and "destroy" a nice adventure - and I'm sure these games will be great. Take your time and make it a good one.

Finally:
I'll add both other entries to the MAGS entries list after they are released but the winner this time is bluber.
Congratualions! bluber, please check you PM for some information about the next contest. Thanks.

I hope this is okay for all of you.

Hey, that sounds totally fair to me.  Wouldn't want to rush my programmer into death by GlobalInts.  Thanks for giving us a shot at finishing, and you'll definitely see our game in the completed game thread before long.  Congrats, bluber, when I have a wink of spare time I'll have to play your game. :)
