WHAM

"Hirschel, would it be possible for us to grow any herbs which would be valuable for trading, or perhaps could be refined into potions of some value?"

Hirschel nods.

"Yes, my King. It will take time, but I do believe I will be able to provide us with some herbs that might fetch a fine price in the south. I', afraid I'm not much of a potionmaker myself, but I have worked with southern alchemists in the past and I believe I can provide us with something of use. Mind, though, that growin quality herbs takes time, and I cannot promise a harvest this summer. We could harvest early, but that might reduce the quality of the herbs, and selling poor ingredients to alchemists for quick profit is a game several would-be herbalists have lost their lives attempting."

Ponch

Say "We should allow these herbs to ripen in their own time. We must have a quality product to sell and thus "grow" our reputation."
(Nod smugly at our clever pun)

miguel

I agree with The Ponch (notice how I wrote the Ponch, not just Ponch).
We should focus on that underwater cave and get us some loot from whatever beast may be hidden there!

Or alternatively, we can commit suicide and thus relieve ourselves from the misery of managing a kingdom. :=

miguel

That word is something I keep away from as much as I can, even in a light comic situation. I refuse to even think that people do have to consider it.

> Hershel, take your time but do grow us some quality grass herbs. Chose the ones that alchemists most likely need.

WHAM

"It would be a poor beginning for our future trade in the area of herbs and potions if we sold hastily grown and poor quality merchandise. Take all the time you need and let me know if you need anything or when we have something to offer for our traders."

Hirschel nods, clearly pleased with your words.

"I shall do my best, my King."

As Hirschel begins to make his exit the Jester pipes up: "My King, your dinner guest awaits, for it is late now. I suggest we enter the dining room before our meal goes cold."

+1 to this. Hirschel probably has a nice variety of spices to season our dinner.

Also, +1 to pooping. Time to spend a little time on the other throne. +2 to washing hands. :=

miguel

Don't wash hands, make them smell it, we are the King!

WHAM

You decide it is time for dinner, and invite Hirschel to accompany you. He promises to bring some dried spices with him.

Your guests are seated around you, and the food smells unusually delicious. As the King you are served first, and in moments you and your guests are enjoying a delicious meal along with friendly discussions into several subjects. Hirschel entertains the table with tales of his travels as well as descriptions of some of the more rare and pequliar plants he has encountered, such as the scalding-to-the-touch dragon's tongue flower, the mandrake root and a highly rare desert rose, which only blooms once every decade and even then only on one specific day.

Baron, the pirate envoy, returns the favor with tales of grand battles on the high seas, and while he mentions having sunk or captured ships from all over the world, he never mentions having sunk one belonging to any previous king or the traders of your realm. You suspect he is simply being courteous. Baron also speaks at length with Dennis of the traders, and the two seem to come along well together. Dennis soon tells you that he believes that, should the King approve, he could forge a deal with the Forkbeak pirate clan, in which your people would supply the pirates with timber and cloth, while the pirates would pay with precious jewels and gold, as well as fish from the sea.

The night winds down and people begin to seem tired. If you wish, you might raise another subject for one of the people in the table, or you might simply head to bed and see what tomorrow brings.

Radiant

Note to self, we need to commission a friendlier flag :)

Wasn't Rorik also meant to be in attendance?

>Ask Baron if any nation considers him an enemy and if we as a kingdom can get retaliations for using his services;

I personally agree with making the deal, we need gold. But would also like to hear what he has to say about his piracy deeds.
And, like Radiant, I think that flag is something pirates would use, not kings.

+1. And, as already suggested, we could use a BETTER NAME than "Grimdark" too!

WHAM

You decide that you need to know as much as possible of this Baron and his pirates before agreeing to anything with him, and what better way to find out that to ask.

Baron considers you question for a moment, then replies:

"We pirates are enemies to no nation, per se, but all seafaring folk consider pirates an enemy of sorts. Some decide to bargain with us, thus gaining safety on the high seas and the coastlines, while others arm their ships and men and try to fight us. Beyond this most natural state of affairs the six major pirate clans do not always see eye to eye, but the Forkbeaks are the greatest clan by a wide margin. No other clan can muster even half of the ships and men that are at the Forkbeak's disposal at any given moment."

I'm almost certain we also invited Rorik to dine with us (I think that was the whole point of this dinner in the first place?) - I'd just like to know if he's conspicuously absent, or just absent because that wasn't part of the orignal plan? Regardless:

The difference between a pirate and privateer is basically just a letter of marque - if we were to offer Baron and his men amnesty on the condition that he and his people recognize our sovereignty and not attack our ships, we could even endorse his plunder in our name, perhaps grant him and his men land within our kingdom? I think it's a good idea to have a group of pirates on our side, particularly if we don't already have a royal navy. They aren't asking for pay unless we are looking for naval escort, and have also offered to help broker trade in the West: I think that's a pretty fair deal.
