Title: MAGS June: No Inventory Allowed (Winner announced)
Post by: Dualnames on Sun 30/05/2010 22:33:39
What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS website (http://www.mags-competition.tk/).

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers.

MAGS is the perfect opportunity to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic. You may get help for the competition, as long as you end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it should prove hard to organize a big team within 30 days.

You are not allowed to (re)use material already created before this competition, you game must be completely new! An exception goes for sounds and music where you can also use free material that is available to the public. Modules and templates are allowed.

Please do not just enter the competition with a rushed entry (a game created in just some hours)

This means that you can make a game and rush it, but don't do it to just win by default.

Voting:

PLAY THE GAMES! (The hyperlinks lead to the game file, not the voting page)

Tale by Calin Leafshade (http://www.thethoughtradar.com/AGS/Tale.zip)
Kitten Adventures by Tijne (http://www.mediafire.com/file/wqfrmiqnkot/Kitten.zip)

Winner: Calin Leafshade

Voting ends on 16th of July (till the 15th you can vote!)

This MAGS has currently ended. If you want to make a game in 30 days, by a certain ruleset, your chance lies on the JULY MAGS (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=41283.0)

Topic: No Inventory Allowed
This month's guidelines were set by Ben304 and Calin Leafshade:

So no inventory system is allowed within the game.

Thread Rules:

1)  Comments are allowed at all times. Anyone can comment, critic and express his opinion about an entry, the MAGS, and the host's mother, without being obliged to hide it! As long as the critic isn't like "You suck", something more elaborate could be more useful because after all this is a test for all developers to see if they can really make a game within a month, therefore feedback is crucial. [/i]

2)  Participators are allowed to patch their games even while the voting but I should be informed via pm or here, and only IF the game has a serious bug that makes it crash. Due to the inability of keeping track of versions of the games, I've settled to this.

3) It would be wiser to add the game to the AGS database, so you can easily do changes to the game, while the voting is going on, without having to inform me at all.

So you can patch your game, if it crashes or if it can't be completed.

Have fun this month too!!
All games till the END OF JUNE.(Unless Extension is Given)

CHANGES
From the first of May, some changes will occur on the MAGS competition, hopefully for the best of developers and for the attraction of outsiders to this community.

MAGS A (January, March,May, July, September, November)

It starts on 1st and ends on 30/31st.

The winner sets up the theme of the next MAGS A
Voting and playing lasts whilst MAGS B is going on. (2 weeks each)

MAGS B (February, April, June, August, October, December)

It starts on 1st and ends on 28/29/30/31st.
The winner sets the theme of the next MAGS B.

Voting and playing lasts whilst MAGS A is going on. (2 weeks each)

The winner of this month if not deadly obvious from this post, will set the rules of August. MAGS A and MAGS B are just a way to clarify and indicate condition of the competitions.

To sum up, there will be constantly a 30 days game making month, and a 30 days voting and playing month for that, whilst on the second process another game making month of 30 days will overlap.

Summing up: Every month one new game making month round, one game voting month round.

By "inventory system" do you mean an inventory window - or every other form of inventory (for example, the game just checks if the player has an item when you interact with it)?

I don't mean anything, but from what I can tell, is that no inventory. Or anything that resembles an inventory screen.

I guess 'inventory' implies a space for multiple items.. a character could hold *one* item and have no need for an inventory..

An example of a game without inventory:  Loom
Or it could just simply be like Heed or !, where you only interact with the room.

Well, there is a spell book (but you're not required to) that you can pick up and use it for future reference so it's like the whole game contains only one inventory items.

Note that the example Calin mentioned doesn't apply here since that 1-item deal usually means you're holding that item in your hand, without putting it in your (bottomless) pocket, but in Loom there is actually another item that you must pick up and hold in your hand, which is the distaff, making the book an inventory item.

Hmm, I totally don't remember there being a spell book.  I must not have ever picked it up when I was younger.  I believe I used to just remember the colors of the spells each time.

After checking it again I think the book could not be picked up, sorry for the confusion. (FYI The book is in the dying room.)

So Quest For Yrolg would qualify? Or Weird Dreams? Or Mixed Up Mother Goose?

I'd hate to post in a MAGS thread for the third month in a row saying that I *might* do something only to have nothing emerge again, but I *did* start a game, by coincidence, that featured no inventory items. This should be quite do-able...

Someone asked me to do some art for his MAGS entry, I know I won't cheat, cause if I had AGS footballer would have the last MAGS, so it's not defined in the rules, but I might be able to have some fun, so would you object? Would you vote for that game? or would you disregard cause you think its cheat?

I must admit that the subject title might have been a bit confusing, but there's one every month. So from the 1st of the month until the 28/29/30/31st of the month (depending on the month). Since June has 30 days, tomorrow is the last one.

The last second of June is 23:59.59 so.....  ;D
I believe GMT is the timezone.

On a serious note, extensions are always there. Though it's either no extension at all or till Saturday, if you guys want it. I also have something ready (apparently not for the competition, just a little something I made), but I may not manage to wrap it up.

Tijne: If you need an extension f%^& the rest, and ask for it. :D

Rest: Take a joke lightly this once damnit!

Err..
I don't really need an extension...
My entry's been done for a few days, I'm just reluctant to release it early incase there's something I want to change/fix....

:D

EDIT: Actually I may as well just post it now.

DESCRIPTION: On a deep blue day, as the dawn began to approach, little Ruby awoke
to an empty house. There was no waft of tuna in the air to fill her
nose. There was no blair of music nor crackle of television, nor even a
hint of sizzling bacon to perk her ears. There was only silence, and a
stale smell of burned rubber. Something was wrong. She was alone.

Help this poor lost kitten traverse across great obstacles, battle against vicious creatures, and discover what happened to her owner.

Calin Leafshade, I won't pm you again. You know the drill. Rules in 14 days. Congrats on a new forum and MAGS record. Calin along with ProgZ and Tijne being the only ones to have won two interlaced MAGS.

Tijne, don't be sad, you're my favorite MAGS entree.  ;)

I voted Tijne cause I really like platform games and it was a surprise to see a platform game in the mags compo.
And one that worked pretty well.  ;)

Congrats from me too Calin!

I must say that I enjoyed both games, Tijne's game was a really brilliant effort with some good gameplay.

Calin's game was really funny (I especially liked the solution to the "get cat out of tree" puzzle).

Interestingly enough, had I not known the rules in advance, I could have sworn the theme in this month was cats...
