Topic: 'Food'
This month's guidelines were set by AprilSkies:
What is food to us? There are a possible infinite number of answers to this question: Some of us eat because we like to eat. Others eat because they're hungry. Some eat only junk-food because they are greedy... Some like to cook and prepare food. Some like to eat food prepared by someone else. Some like fast-food. Some like fine-dining. For a lot of people in the world, unfortunately, there is not enough food....
Create a game that is about "FOOD". No rules about setting or technical requirements, just make a game that revolves around food. Maybe it could be about cooking, or about finding the ingredients of a recipe, or it could be set in a restaurant or in a kitchen... You choose.
Have fun... and Bon Appetit!
Ending 4th December

Note: big apologies for being so late this month, I have been very busy these past few days. As a result this MAGS will finish on 4th December instead of 31st Nov!

What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.
You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed.
Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:
âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot
At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive (http://www.mags-competition.info/?page=games). For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website. (http://www.mags-competition.info/)
Well, I'm in again. Why not? Am I addicted to Mags ?I wouldn't say that but my privates were itching since the last day of October. Could be something else like the treponema pallidum bacteria but I think it's game-making-related.
waiting to see what will come out of here.
and good luck everyone

:-D will Muriel be a deadly chef in this chapter?
I have some ideas... I'll try!

Hahaha....I thought you were talking about the itchy genitals at first and thought "How did he know???" (laugh)
And naw....2 MAGs in a row is enough for me...I only did October because I already had the idea for a two-player system with data-swapping handled by a text code string, and the Trick-Or-Treat format was perfect for a test-of-concept trial...Also, I love Halloween...
I think my next project will be using a similar system, only a bit more refined, but that project will not be a MAGs. It will take a bit longer than that...
Well good luck to all who undertake the insanity that is MAGs this month...
I really love the themes, but I don't think I'll be joining in - trying to finalise demo builds for AX, can't really let anything get in the way of that. Hope to have a few minutes to try out some of the entries though, and see what innovative uses of the theme people come up with!
Well, I did some scripting and drawing and plot writing, and I came with this:
----------------------------------------
Füd: The Vegetarian Dragon
Do you think that being a dragon is easy? Ha! What about being a vegetarian dragon? Yes, you read it right. No eating mighty adventurers. Only lettuce. And such.
This is the story of Füd, a little dragon harassed by his community just because... Well, his diet priorities.
----------------------------------------
I've coded a few dialogues and the first puzzle. I don't have all the details on the story yet, so we'll see if I can make the deadline for this one... The game will be available (if I manage to finish it in time) in English and Spanish.
Hahaha! Charming story idea there! Everyone loves the underdog. especially underdog by choice...Good luck with this one! I wanna play it!
I agree, great setting and lovely graphics! My November entry is way behind schedule, some painting work got in the way and I have to get it finished first. Don't know if I can make it this month.
Just a few ideas sketched and discussed, but I think our project is now viable enough to announce that we intend to enter (me and the Big P).

I'm not scared to go back to prison.
Hey guys, a lot of things came up at work and college, so I won't be able to finish my game in time... Sorry :(
The other day I was toying around with an idea for reality TV show where genetically modified junk food take part in different challenges.

I was going to put a crowd in the background, but I got sidetracked.
Doubt I'll get round to it though, I've been struck by motivational lightning for another project.
I look forward to what you guys come up with!
Well, I was going to write an Oceanspirit Dennis game about his early life where he works in a fast food restaurant to save money to buy a ship. But then I ended up having not a lot of free time this month so it didn't happen. Perhaps I'll join the december MAGS... ;)

I'm going to have to formally ask for an extension to finish our game. Something's come up, all over me. (roll) We are sooooo close to being done, but I can't let my team down by releasing the game in its current state. I ask to be given until midnight Saturday (Dec 6) to submit the project. Thank you for your sincere consideration,

Baron lives in Canada, and as such he is prone to predation by polar bears, glaciers, and drunken Americans. I'm sure his excuse is a valid one. (nod)

I have it on good authority that moments ago Baron was seen on his snowmobile making his way in the frigid Canadian darkness to his nearest eMailbox to drop off our game. Fingers crossed he won't hit a moose or get swallowed up by a snowbank before the deadline gets here! :cheesy:
Don't forget your Toque! or your sure to be back on your Chesterfield sick with a cold, Baron!! ;)
Ooh! Look at you being all Canadian-y, buddy! (http://www.barnrunner.com/pics/misc/Roger_Canada.png)
Sorry for the delay, folks: Fridge Follies (http://www.vanwijst.com/games/fridge/fridge_mags.zip).

It's not quite where we wanted it to be at when we released it, but that's MAGS for you. The lack of voice acting somewhat diminishes the speech system, but it's kind of too late to start that now. Maybe tomorrow... (*yawn*). Also there's no save/load. :P
Anyway.... enjoy! :)
You made it! Yippee!
Mmmmmm.. That delicious game really hit the spot. Thanks Baron / Ponch and co. :P
That was fun! (laugh)
Thanks, guys! Glad you liked it. And thanks to Frodo and Grundy for pitching in with Scottish and Spanish translations, respectively. We were going to have Ghost do the German translations but he hasn't been around lately so Baron and I decided to do it ourselves despite the fact that neither one of us is fluent in German. But with the two of us working on it, I think most people (especially the ones who also don't speak German) will never suspect that the sauerkraut's dialog might be just a teeny bit off.
Congrats Baron and Ponch, this was great fun. :-D
I can assure you that you perfectly captured the essence of the Sauerkrautian language!
Votes are in people! In ascending order:
Fridge Follies, by Baron and Ponch
Oceanview McDennis, by Dennis
and the winner is...

Oceanview McDennis - 304 votes plus the official rule that any OSD game automatically trumps any non-osd game. Teh awesome!

Also, Food Factor looked promising based on that screenshot.

Mr. and Mrs. Ponch, if you please. We're old fashioned in that way. :=

Thanks for all the positive feedback, folks! It's too bad we're the only show in town.... Ponch was all about just stepping over the low bar to victory, but in the end I was able to henpeck him into creative submission. ;)

Vicious lies! Why, if I weren't so lazy, I'd refute that libel point by point. But that would take energy that I don't have at my advanced age. Now get in the kitchen and make me some bean dip!
Thanks Ponch and Baron!

I'm not sure what you mean Mandle, it's a perfectly innocent celebration gif for Ponch and Baron.
You're right, Mandle. Upon close inspection of the image, that's not a fourth of July fireworks display at all. Those trees would have all their leaves if this had happened during the summer. Good catch, my friend. You have a keen eye. :=
And for a closed thread, there sure are a lot of replies! :D
Oh golly, now I watch that giffington again, there seems to be a rather rude image appearing! Well by golly gollington, what a travesty maversty!

I must be the owner of a quite perverted mind if I noticed the outline the fireworks make, the first time I saw the .gif. I simply can't stop laughing. What a way to honour Ponch and Baron! I can't find anything rude in the .gif either! (laugh)
Thank you, Ponch & Atelier. I hadn't laughed like a maniac for a very long time! :-D
