As there were no entries for August, and therefore no one to set the theme for October, I thought it would be a good idea to have another "Finish Your MAGS" edition, to breathe new life into one of your old abandoned MAGS games.
No extra guidelines, but it might be worth remembering that the haunting season is upon us, so you are invited, but by no means obliged, to include something spoOoOoky.

What is MAGS?
Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the guidelines set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.
Rules
Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualize your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:
* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot
At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days, and the winner chooses the next month's theme.
Remember that this is a challenge to see what you can do in a month, so any tinkering you do after that, including fixing minor glitches, is against the spirit of the competition. The exception to this is that you may go in and fix major, game-breaking bugs only during voting. We want you to have a game that voters can actually play and that runs on their machines.
So to reiterate, during the voting period fixing major, game-breaking bugs is okay, fixing minor glitches or making cosmetic changes is cheating.
Tips
Here are some ways to make sure you have a game to submit at the end of the month:
* Make a tiny game. Plan small, then cut it in half. Find shortcuts (e.g. if making walkcycles is time-consuming, make the characters static or have it in the first person).
* Plan to have your game playable and submittable with a week to spare. This way you have a week to fix bugs, add some flourishes and maybe even get someone to test it.
* Plan to submit it a day or so early. This way, if there are any technical issues with uploading, they can be sorted out in time.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I'll finish my part of a game heltonjon and I worked on a while back if it's not disqualifying to have done a little design work outside of the challenge month. I think I'm going to have to redo the assets I made, but some of the designs for them were worked on after the month was over. Very little actual game logic was done, and even that will probably need a fresh start.
Edit: Would this be allowed, Stupot?
Edit again: Given that it's probably outside of the spirit of MAGS to have done any work outside of the competition month, I'll finish our game outside of MAGS. Maybe I'll revive one of my own unfinished MAGS ideas.
Hi Pell,
If you feel that the amount of work you did outside of the contest month would give you an unfair advantage, then it might be better to set it aside, but if the extra amount you did was just a few bits and bobs, then it might not be too much of a problem. Maybe discuss it with heltenjon and see what you both agree on.
Also, if anyone reading this has any views or objections, please voice them below.
Well, the point of the theme is to make the community members finish their games, so it shouldn't be too strict. I agree wholeheartedly with Stupot's comment.
Anyway, using pre-existing assets are generally allowed now, I believe, so using sprites drawn earlier would be a bit like using stuff from the trove, RoN or Background Blitz, which I don't think is a problem for participation. But maybe original art made in the same month would impress more and gather more votes.
I think we can trust the participants to use their common sense.
Thanks for the responses. If I decide to stay in with this game, I'll redo some of the design work.
I'm confused. If this is "finish your mags game", then isn't it normal that a lot of the game is done? Or is the theme "discarded mags ideas"?

I think Pell's concern was whether the theme is intended for games that were worked on only during the MAGS contests they were meant for, since Pell had done more work on their game after that period.
I don't see a problem myself, unless the extra amount done is an incredibly unfair amount.
Okay, tks for the extra info. :) It confused me.
Now, if I stop procrastinating, I might actually have one finished this time around.
I'm reasonably sure I'll have something Alien related. I thought one of my puzzles would involve binary bitwise manipulation, but I'm very unsure I going to be able to do it. Right now I'm only confusing myself. In other words, the puzzle will likely be there, but it may be totally screwed.
I upsized to 640x480, and I'm having a lot of problems with portions of the BASS template GUIs, as well as the smallish Say text size. I managed to "fix" the Esc, but the other F-keys seem to be belly up, and I'm not sure why. I am sure I probably won't be able to fix all these issues before I dump it on you folks. Cause I's too stoopid.
Happy with my title: Hour's First Contact. Also pretty happy with my Hour character. Not too happy with Glob, but such is life.
Edit: Spent a bit more time rereading the help file about fonts, and I now have font sizes that are making me happy.

I noticed this when I scaled up as well. The logic scales up, in other words invisible buttons are where they should be for a scaled-up interface. But the graphics are too small and in the wrong place. I'm assuming if I replace the graphics with scaled-up versions it would work. But I'll probably just work at the original size for now.

May be more than that, at least in my case. I've been dinking around with the BASS Save Gui, and while I've got the labels and buttons in their proper place, I seem to have lost the functionality. What I'm working on is short enough that not having save/reload won't be a game killer, but still... May have to resort to a DIY method?
On a more pleasant note... I'm making good progress with my effort. Need to tidy up a couple of dialogue trees. May also change the Anim8or camera angle for one of the characters, since my current views seem distorted. Might also redo one of the characters from scratch, although I've grown rather fond of his/her/its appearance. We are, after all, dealing with Aliens, are we not?
Damn, RL keeps getting in the way. :-\
Not looking like I'll finish any of the MAGS games this time around either.
@jwalt, if it's a very very short game, what I usually do, is make it a single savegame slot. F5/button saves to that slot, and F7/Restore restores that slot (if it exists). Easy and fast to code. ;)

I was actually able to fix the resize issue and get the GUIs to save/reload with the F-keys. Got hung up for a bit because the game saves evidently save the GUI states as well. So it was working for a new save, but when I reloaded a previous game, the GUIs went back to being messed up. I cleared all the saved games and began again, and I had it working just as expected/wanted. I'm fairly confident that it's no longer an issue. However, I've no clue where the BASS template sends the saved games. They certainly don't show up in the Saved Game folder.
Now trying repeated play throughs of the game to try and break it. Seems rock solid, so far. Still too much of a movie, but that's life for me. Also, it's not really that much of a game, but I've learned a ton of stuff about both AGS and Anim8or. Well worth the effort.

I think they are supposed to go under Users -> Your username -> Saved Games -> folder with the same name as your game folder. Is that where you are looking?

I'd changed the game's name a couple of times now. I'd been looking where you said they should have been, and once I remembered what I was currently calling the game, bingo, the files were there. What's that Simpson expression: D'oh.
I'd likely never figured it out without heltonjohn's nudge. Thanky.
Even found the .pcx picture, so, apparently, all of the F keys are working.
I am aware that there are quite a few days left before this competition ends, but I'm afraid to try to stuff any more into the box. So far, it seems well behaved; I haven't been able to break it. If anyone wants to take it for an early spin, it would be appreciated. Believe this will stand as my entry.

I'll have to generate a screen shot. Don't have one handy at the moment. I'll edit one in as soon as possible.
Edit:
I wasn't sure about doing this one or not. I couldn't think of an unfinished MAGS game I wanted to work on this month. But I did look through an external hard drive and found one. I'll have to do some research for when the game was started, but I'd guess it's from my first year on the forum. I should just barely have enough time to finish it, assuming nothing major happens.
So I've had barely any free time at all to work on the game, just been too busy with real life. If I have enough time today, I'll try to throw together a small demo game and release it, if not, I'll just give a sneak peek of the animations I have done this month once I'm done. I plan to keep working on this over the next year and hopefully finish it when my life is a little less hectic.
Well, I've hit the inevitable part where I begin to question if my game will be worth finishing or not. I'm going to try to find some kind of inspiration. If I don't, then what I'll have will be mediocre at best.

I also had a lot of new work come in since telling heltenjon I was working on this again. So now I'm cramming at the last minute. This probably won't be more than a proof of concept, but we should have something in, at least.
I have too much left to do and not really enough time to do it. Maybe if I had 4-6 more working hours than I do I could make something somewhat worthwhile. Good luck to those still working on their games.

Sorry to hear! I wasn't sure myself if I would be able to finish, awfully busy these last couple days. But it looks like I might be able to release something small today, certainly not what I first envisioned though.

Something weird happened to me. After I entered the 2nd room past the lasers, and then did so again with the 2nd character, then switched back to the first character, I was unable to walk around anymore. I figured out that the walk function had switched to the right mouse button instead of the left button. I was also unable to left click to select inventory items anymore. Whatever the problem was, it persisted after a save + load. But I wasn't able to replicate it after restarting the game.

That's very weird. Hopefully it won't repeat. I'll check the game to see if I can replicate it and post a fix before the end of the submission time. If you have any further details, that'll help too!
Thank you. I can't promise anything epic, I still have a lot of other things going on this week, but at least I should be able to submit... something.

I think something is conspiring against me. I had a stomach bug yesterday and didn't get anything done. And lost power for awhile this morning.
Hopefully nothing else will go wrong and I'll be able to make something playable. Definitely won't be a great game. A big part that will determine the quality is whether or not I can come up with a better start to the game.
I just realized that with the time change tomorrow that I have no clue when the deadline will be. Hopefully I'll get it right.
Also, I'm considering confining walkable areas so I only need up and down walk cycles. It depends on how much I get done in the next couple of hours.
Good luck to anyone else still working on their game.

That argument is silly and easily. It depends if you're using a map or a globe. The earth is malleable and changes shape to represent whatever representative object the most people that day have looked at.

Of course I don't believe that. I'm just joking and have absolutely no interest in arguing with anyone about the shape of anything more important than cookies or cakes.
I would say that depends whose timezone is closest to GMT.Since the deadline is only 5:59 pm for me (assuming what I looked up is right), I most likely will be submitting within 30 minutes of the deadline.
Well I didn't consider that solution because

I swear I tried it earlier and it did nothing, and it also doesn't solve the problem of plugging it in, because I don't see any hotspots to do that. Also reported to Babar on discord but if you walk off the screen with plug in hand it's a soft lock because she doesn't put it back :P
So I'll keep trying from here but I still have no idea how to do that thing mentioned.Never mind, found it.

So I have until 6:00 tonight. That makes it easy since that's my bedtime anyway and I don't intend to stay up any later than that. Technically I have something submittable right now, so I'm just going to spend the next 10 hours finetuning it, but I'm not going to stress. I know it's not great, lol. Next one will be better.

Ahh. Then I guess it depends on how much of a perfectionist you choose to be on if you submit before me or not. I don't have anything playable at all. Since there were thunderstorms so much yesterday and I had already lost power in the morning, I didn't turn my pc on at all. So all I got done was what I could on my Chromebook.
Ahh. That does make sense. I had no idea since it doesn't show a location for you. And must not go on a tangent about Chupacabras and work on my game instead...
To be honest, if you submit it before I close the contest, I'm not going to be checking the timestamp too closely.

Well, all I really have is a demo of a battle. I accepted a while back that I wasn't going to be finishing a full game this time around. So, I'm probably not going to be too picky about it. I would just like it to at least be as functional as possible.

Ahh, okay. Good luck with that much. I'm attempting to at least have a beginning, middle, and end and "puzzles". Just none of it will be as good as I'd like.
Chupacabra tangent below.
Spoiler
The most mysterious thing to me is that I've heard that the most known description of chupacabras and the movie Species are both from 1995. Except I'm pretty sure I had a shirt featuring the typical chupacabra from 92 or 93. I did find images of the shirt this morning, but I can't find proof of when it's from.
Now to go back to finishing the more refined version of the cereal box for my game...

GMT! I was thinking I had until late tonight to work on it. We may have something. I'll try to get it in before you close it up.
With the headache I've had most of today, I'm struggling with putting things together. I'll have something finished by the official deadline, but won't promise it'll be more than just walking around and some dialog. From there I will to have some updates until either the thread is closed or I'm too tired to work any more. Good luck to everyone still working.
Oh, no! I finished the demo but when I try to run the .exe file it doesn't run the game I've made, instead it runs an earlier version of the template I based my game on! What is going on?

Ok I figured it out! Uploading.
https://perpetuallproductions.itch.io/mvm-demo-patience-is-a-virtue
I present... a very very early beta version of an MvM Game Demo, released for MAGS.
This is not a full episode, only a demo of a single boss battle that I would like to include in a future release.
Your opponent in this match is one I think we've all struggled with in this competition. I know I have. It is a demon that bends our perception and causes time to get away from us, making us procrastinate, rush, or otherwise use our time unwisely. It leaves chaos in its wake.
I don't expect any votes, but I'd appreciate any feedback. I would like to know how people enjoy the textmode aesthetics and basic combat mechanics of my game that I plan to make many future games based upon in the years to come, when time permits. I know it's a little clunky right now and leaves a lot to be desired. Definitely needs cleaning up. But hopefully you can get a feel for it. It will be easier to use in the future.
Controls:
Type Scriptures into the text parser at the top of the screen and press enter to exorcise the Warp Worm. You have 9 minutes to quote about 10 verses. Right now the wording has to be exact, and only the first 40 Psalms in the King James Version of the Bible are supported.
Hint: Not all verses may be effective. You may have to find Scriptures that are specific to having Patience to cast this timesucking Demon out.
In future releases I plan to also implement weapons, prayers, co-op and "Devil's Advocate" modes, and allowing for minor differences in wording, color cycling, etc. Plus the Scriptures that are used will be specific to the Vice the Demon possesses, and there will be stat bars for each Virtue that you level up in, as you can see. There will be a lot more features then, God willing. I have already started working on these, but they are not ready to release. Right now it is basically just a memory game.
Known bugs:
It's a little slow when you submit a verse. This is likely due to the fact that I've stored over 12,000 words in the parser that it has to search. I'll have to look for ways to speed it up.
If you use a different version of the Bible than King James, at this moment, it may cause a game crash. I am working on fixing it and adding other translations, but for now just stick to the KJV. I'm having too much trouble updating the text parser right now for some reason.
When I lose and the game restarts, I get an error that says it can't find the last save file. This may not be an issue for anyone else, may just be on my end. None of the files are being saved to the right folder on my computer. Shouldn't affect gameplay.
Please let me know if you come across any other glitches! I haven't tested the completed version yet.
Edit: Yeah, there are a lot of bugs and crashes in this game. I'll have to work those issues out, but it's playable.

Second version compiled and uploaded. Posting here about it as proof that it's before the closing. Hope to test and have a "final" version before the close.
I was rushing to finish assets so I could throw something together for midnight my time. But now is past the real GMT deadline, and I only just finished the major assets. It wouldn't be fair to spend another couple of hours to get something in. It wouldn't have been more than a quick walk-through of the scenes with a couple of interactions anyway. Next time we have a "finish your MAGS game" topic, I'll have most of the assets done.
I'll edit this with some images of the assets.
Edit: Here are the assets, minus a couple of puzzle spoilers:

I took a short break and then tested the second upload. It seems to work at least. I expect absolutely no votes. Nor do I want any. After my unplanned hiatus from the forum and game making, it was just nice to actually complete something, even if it wasn't anything remotely close to what I wanted.
Congrats to those who finished. And good luck finishing next time pell.

To be fair, the theme that month was "Time Warp". I dunno if it would've been more or less poetic if we ran out of time to complete it :=

Finished jwalt's masterpiece, but about the other games:
@Perpetuall : I unfortunately don't know many Bible verses, but I'm not sure how the system works. I typed in "In the beginning there was the Word", but I got no reaction or response. What is supposed to happen?
@VampireWombat : I feel a bit dumb, but I can't get to the screen you shared in the screenshot. I don't see any interactable except the AC unit, and the edges of the screens don't go anywhere?

Thanks a lot, Kitty Trouble. That will probably help get me moving on that game. I'd stalled out in two of the entries. Haven't tried the third one, yet, but I will.

So, because I was too busy to actually code the entire Bible, I only got through to coding the first 40 chapters of the book of Psalms at the moment. I also wanted to implement an in-game Bible you can read from, but didn't get to figuring out how I can do that. I also am working on making it less strict with the input, but right now you have to type in the entire verse word for word.
So if you try to quote any verse other than what is in the first third of Psalms, it won't work. But, if you have a Bible on hand, King James version, you can read from Psalms and type in one verse at a time, and that should work. (If you don't have one, you can read from here: https://biblehub.com/kjv/psalms/1.htm)
The first 20 or so Psalms have narration, and I scripted them to be specific to the topic-for instance, verses about faith will only affect the Faith stat and so on, so will only work on a Fear Demon. So those verses might not work to defeat this Demon unless they're about Patience. But the last 20 or so were thrown together quickly, have no voice acting as of yet, and they should work regardless of what they're about, because I just wanted to finish something.
My original vision for this game was as a method to memorize Scripture and apply it to situations. I think people are woefully ignorant about their own beliefs and values, and as a result people's behavior tends to be inconsistent and irrational. Anything I can do to make them think about it more I would like to encourage. If I can find a way to make studying religious and philosophic beliefs as fun as playing video games, then I feel like I've accomplished something at least. But perhaps I am not quite there yet with this one.

Yeah, I really should have just made transitions from one room to another work based on regions or walkable areas or something. My AGS skills are really rusty and I didn't even think about either on Sunday.
My vote:
Spoiler
Really bad at giving detailed feedback, but while the other entries showed a lot of potential and scope for amazing ideas, I went with jwalt's game as being the most comprehendibly complete entry.
I've seen a lot of his art on the forums over the years, but I'd never played any of his games, and I've got to say, the 3d art and style of animation works really well, and is quite charming! The humour worked on me too, despite there not really being any very deep puzzles.
I'm in a hurry at the moment, but here are some quick thoughts:
Hour Al (by jwalt):
Spoiler
Funny, as usual. I like the 3D renderings and the story is fitting for the Alien theme. It's mostly an animation, though, not all that many game elements.
The Sphinx of Time (by Babar and jfrisby):
Spoiler
This is the most complete game this month, with puzzles and story, music and all in place. It got my vote. I will post a more detailed feedback in the game's own thread. (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/completed-game-announcements/the-sphinx-of-time-mags-october/) when I get the time.
Chupacabra Crunch (by VampireWombat):

I'm so glad you finished it! Even though this is sort of a training game for you to get your chops back, I bet it feels good to finish and get something out there. Hope to see more from you soon.
MvM Demo: Patience is a Virtue (by Perpetuall):
Spoiler
I managed to both lose and defeat the demon, but most of my games either froze or I thought they did. Now, you deserve some praise for making this game the way you wanted it, but it didn't work for me. You deserve some more thorough (hopefully constructive) feedback, and I will post it when I get the time. For now: I liked the graphics, a bit mixed about the music, and didn't like the gameplay.
Some feedback for
@Perpetuall (
Patience is a virtue):
Spoiler
I played your game several times, and I managed to beat the demon. Yet, I didn't like the gameplay. Here's why, and some suggestions.
The biggest problem: Typing something is not really fun. Speaking for myself, I don't know Bible verses by heart in English, much less from a medieval version of the text. I get that this one holds a special place in the heart for some people with English as their native tongue, for some reason, but not so for an international audience. (I'm Norwegian, for the record.)
So what did I do? I had the text beside me, and it became a typing game with a time limit. Could I type fast enough and accurate enough? This is old English, and it has to be exact to count.
Any gamer will try to find the best way to beat a game. The shortest verse in the Bible is "Jesus wept", so the typical gamer would type that one over and over again - if that worked. Not so here, the player needed to find verses about patience. (I'm happy I only had to search the Psalms!) I found the shortest one and repeated it until I won. I barely had time to look at the graphics, which is unfortunate, as they were pretty good.
Okay, how could this be made more fun to play, while still being a game about Christianity? I would advice to drop the entire typing approach. It's not fun, and it caters to someone who already know the Bible by heart. I guess that's not the ideal audience.
I'd rather present the player with several Bible verses and let the player choose by clicking on the one that is best in the given situation. This would make the player read the verses, and also contemplate what they really mean. If different demons would be defeated by different virtues presented in Bible verses, I think that could work out. A player could play by clicking, it would reward reading more deeply, and you could play it without being familiar with the Bible passages from earlier experience. Whether that would be fun, would be up to other aspects of the game, of course, but I believe it would be more entertaining than typing accurately. And I think it could "Preach without being preachy", if you know what I mean.
This is meant as constructive criticism and not as a personal attack, and I hope it doesn't come off as such. You must have worked hard to include all that text, and I respect that, but I think you ought to rethink your approach before you code the entire Bible in this way.
Thanks for the votes so far. Keep them coming. We're about halfway through the voting period.
I'm back at it with my usual shenanigans and have once again played all of the contestants. You can find the videos of my attempts below. While I'll always recommend you play the games yourself, if you just can't find the time then this might be an option for you:

That was weird. I loved the ASCII art and the music was really fitting. The psalms are a strange part of the bible and I get why they inspired you to make this game and how they could be used as weapons against demons. Voice acting was a nice touch that added to the overall unsettling atmosphere.
However, the gameplay did nothing for me. Basically, it's a typing trainer. I might have enjoyed the game when I was learning touch typing back in school. But now, I don't like to type random words written in old-fashioned language that I read on my phone into a computer.
The Sphinx of Time
Spoiler
My favourite of the bunch. The graphics were pretty and the music fitting (the voice in the background of one track was unsettling, I thought my kids got up instead of sleeping). Nice trick to make them wear robes to avoid walkcycles. The gameplay was nicely split between the two characters, each with their own set of responses and capabilities. I liked the machine-button puzzle and having to turn on the lasers from outside (took me quite a while to figure that out.)
A few negative points: there were some glitches (like the other character suddenly knowing about things he or she did not hear) or weird leaving/entering rooms. I also had the solution before the puzzle twice (coins, beat).
Overall, well done!
Spoiler
I voted for the Sphinx of Time, as it was the most complete entry with a variety of puzzles, specified task and play value. I was able to complete about 3/4 of it independently but at some point, had difficulty progressing without hints and using WHAM's playthrough.
Thanks for the votes, gang.

@ VampireWombat: Don't take the zero vote to heart. It's happened to me along the way, and I know it can be discouraging. All these MAGS games are learning experiences, and as long as you feel you learned something from the effort, it was worth the effort. My recollection of playing your game was the problem with movement between the rooms. I suggest taking a look at using the room edges for this, rather than hotspots.
Well done to the winners, and thanks, Babar, for the pity vote you sent my way!
:-D Thanks everyone for playing and voting!
This game was way too ambitious and very hard to finish, which is probably why it took close to 2 months to make... I'm still in shock that no one seems really upset about the puzzles!
Spoiler
That big window / button puzzle was like... pretty absurd... but seemed to do something interesting... I wanted to quiz people about solving it, but I'm also traumatized by it :D
Thanks all for the votes! Appreciate all the feedback as well.
And jwalt: It wasn't a pity-vote, I think it was a well-deserved vote, maybe because I haven't played any of your other games before, but I really did find the 3D and the animation charming.
