Title: MAGS October “Modern-Day Mythology” (CLOSED)
Post by: Stupot on Sat 01/10/2022 00:30:17
Topic: Modern-Day Mythology
Set by: CaptainD and Kastchey

Myths, legends, fairy tales... they have been part of humankind's culture for millennia. But what would they be like if you set them in the modern day?

The epic of Gilgamesh, the legend of Robin Hood, the 12 tasks / labours of Hercules / Herakles, fairy tales like the ugly duckling - anything that falls within the bracket of tall tales is welcome here! But what if Gilgamesh sought immortality in Dorset rather than Mesopotamia? What if Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor in Warsaw? How about 12 tasks set inside a  virtual reality version of Bosnia? The ugly duckling retold as the story of a child growing up in Nepal, Jason and the Argonauts seeking a fabled Gold lode in the Klondike or Ulysses making an epic journey home from La Paz to Guatemala City?

Let your imagination run wild! Ancient myths, legends and fairy tales, set in the modern day.

Agreed, the topic is super! I hope lots of AGS-ers jump on this one.

If anyone more artistically inclined than myself need a hand with story, dialogue or puzzles, feel free to give me a shout.

Just curious, do games submitted to these MAGSes have to be adventure games? Is is any game made with AGS fair game?

Not at all and absolutely!

You can submit whatever you like as long as it's made in AGS and somehow fits the theme.

People have entered platformers, racing games, abstract puzzle games, visual novels, various simulators. All sorts.

Glad people like the topic  ;-D

If anyone wants a hand with puzzle design / dialogue or something I'd be up for helping, won't have time for anything more in-depth this month.

Exactly how much leeway do we have in interpreting the rule for "modern day." I have an idea, but it's definitely more of a mid to late 90s vibe. Which to me, as an old person, the 90s feel rather modern-ish. But to the zoomers (who can be found all over the internet these days), it must seem like the ancient past.

I'd say anything 20th or 21st century is fine  8-)

Sweet! I can't promise I'll actually finish it (I so rarely do), but I've started my new MAGS project!  :cheesy:

Really interesting prompt. Gives me all sorts of possibilities. I'll make one last attempt to make something and I won't come back until I have tangible proof that I'm making a thing.

Already considering doing something with Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The town itself in Upstate New York is now a tourist trap every October, that I unfortunately live near so I could do something with that.

Yeah, real life kinda prevents me from joining these, but I do save these MAGS ideas so I can work on them on my own time, to be kind of "proofs of concept" for future game ideas.  But if I were to try this, I could imagine an Ancient Egyptian myth in modern day Japan (and no, Yu-Gi-Oh has nothing to do with this).

Anyhow, good luck to all who enter.

Sorry to hear it guys. I hope you manage to finish the game nevertheless.

This does mean that we only have one entry.
Well done Ponch. Darkness and Denim is the winner.

Sound advice, indeed!  :=

I'm happy to take a win, but I didn't want to win by default.  :undecided:  I hope pell and Heltenjon finish their game. it was a theme with a lot of potential. Thanks to CaptainD and Kastchey for choosing it!
